Camping near Desert Aire, Washington
Desert Aire sits along the Columbia River in Grant County, on the lee side of the Cascades in one of the hottest, driest corners of Washington. The community grew from land purchased by investors in the late 1960s and developed beginning in 1970 around an airpark, golf course, and marina, and it now functions as a quiet base for river recreation near Priest Rapids Dam.
RV travelers use Desert Aire mainly to access the Columbia River corridor and the recreation lands clustered around Vantage, roughly twenty miles north via State Route 243 to Interstate 90. The nearest developed state-park campground is Ginkgo Petrified Forest - Wanapum State Park, with year-round camping at the Wanapum Recreation Area and full hookups for RVs. Closer to I-90, Vantage Riverstone Resort offers full hookups, tent sites, and cabins, while The Park at Cave B near Quincy caters to Gorge Amphitheatre concertgoers.
For longer stays or as a stopover, Sunnyside RV Park sits an easy drive south in the Yakima Valley wine country, and Martha Lake - WDFW Land provides primitive camping for self-contained rigs.
Things to do near Desert Aire
The Columbia River is the main draw. Boating, fishing for walleye, bass, and salmon, water skiing, and swimming all center on Wanapum Lake and the river corridor, with a boat launch and swim beach at Wanapum Recreation Area providing direct access. Wind is common, so paddlers and tent campers should secure gear.
Land-based options focus on geology and history. The Trees of Stone Interpretive Trail at Ginkgo Petrified Forest runs about 1.25 miles past petrified logs in their original setting, with roughly three miles of trails total at the site and an interpretive center holding one of the most diverse petrified wood collections in North America.
West of the river, Cave B Estate Winery and other Quincy-area vineyards are open for tasting, and the Gorge Amphitheatre hosts a busy summer concert calendar that drives heavy demand at nearby campgrounds.

When to visit Desert Aire

64° / 39°F 15 mmWarming sage steppe; fishing openers; comfortable RV window
- summer
June - August
90° / 59°F 8 mmHot and arid; burn bans common; Gorge concert weekends fill fast
- fall
September - November
63° / 39°F 15 mmCooling, dry, and uncrowded; strong shoulder-season RV window
- winter
December - February
41° / 27°F 25 mmCold with hard freezes; occasional snow; quiet at the campgrounds
The shoulder seasons, April through early June and September into October, are the most comfortable for RV travel. Daytime temperatures sit in a pleasant range, the Columbia corridor is largely uncrowded outside of concert weekends, and wildflowers bloom across the sage steppe in spring. Spring is also when many area fishing seasons open.
Summer is hot and arid. Desert Aire has some of the hottest summer temperatures in Washington, with July averaging a high near 91 degrees Fahrenheit, and the area sits in the rain shadow of both the Cascades and the Umtanums. Burn bans are common from midsummer through early fall, so check current restrictions before arrival. This is also peak demand at private parks because of Gorge Amphitheatre events.
Winters are short but cold, with hard freezes and occasional snow. Wanapum Recreation Area offers year-round camping, but the Ginkgo Interpretive Center operates on reduced winter hours, and primitive sites such as Martha Lake - WDFW Land are best suited to milder months.
How to book a campsite
Washington State Parks sites at Ginkgo Petrified Forest - Wanapum State Park are booked online through the state parks reservation system or by calling 888-CAMPOUT (888-226-7688). Reservations are strongly recommended in summer and on Gorge concert weekends, when the campground fills early. Quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., and the stay limit is 10 nights in any one park within a 30-day period, with a 90-night annual cap across all Washington state parks.
Private parks handle their own reservations. Vantage Riverstone Resort and The Park at Cave B book direct, with The Park at Cave B often selling sites tied to specific Gorge events. Sunnyside RV Park takes reservations by phone.
Martha Lake - WDFW Land is first-come, first-served and requires a Washington Discover Pass for vehicle access.
What to expect
Expect open, treeless terrain. Most campgrounds in the area sit on sage steppe or basalt bluffs with limited shade, so plan for awnings, sun protection, and extra water. Wind off the Columbia can be strong and gusty, particularly in the afternoon, and burn bans are routine through the dry months. Rattlesnakes are present in the rocks and brush around Wanapum, so keep pets leashed and watch where children step.
Cell coverage is generally good along the I-90 corridor and thinner at primitive sites. A Discover Pass is required for vehicle access to Washington State Parks day-use areas and WDFW lands such as Martha Lake; registered overnight campers do not need a separate Discover Pass while parked in the state park where they are staying.
Gorge Amphitheatre concert weekends drive heavy traffic, full campgrounds, and noise at parks within a few miles of the venue. Book well ahead or pick a site farther from Quincy if quiet is the priority.

Pack a collapsible water bowl and pet booties, since the basalt rock and summer pavement get very hot in Grant County's high-desert sun.
fws.gov/refuge/saddle-mountainCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Desert Aire?
Yes, RV delivery Desert Aire renters appreciate is one of the easiest ways to start a trip, especially if you are flying into the area or new to driving a big rig. They will level the rig, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Filter listings by Delivery on RVezy and message hosts for a quote (typical delivery fees range from $2 to $5 per mile from their home base).

If you are planning a longer haul to Spokane (about 2.5 hours) or the San Juan Islands ferries, simply message the host before booking to add an extra mileage package. Hosts often say yes when you ask up front.

Desert Aire shines from late April through mid-October, with summer highs typically in the 85 to 95 degree Fahrenheit range and very little rain, perfect for Columbia River boating and Gorge concerts. Winters are short but cold, with January lows around the mid-20s and occasional snow. Shoulder seasons mean lower nightly rates, easier campground bookings, and lighter concert-weekend traffic on Highway 243.
weather.gov/otx/I'm renting an RV for the first time. Will I get help figuring it out?
Yes, and that is one of the best parts of booking through RVezy. Your host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering the generator, slide-outs, propane, water systems, leveling, and dump procedure. Most hosts also send a digital orientation guide before your trip and stay reachable by text the entire time. If it is your first time renting an RV, consider starting with a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer under 25 feet, both of which drive more like a big truck than a bus. The flat, straight roads around Desert Aire and Highway 243 are forgiving for new drivers, and RVezy support is available if you have questions on the road.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002180893-RentersWhat happens if I have a breakdown or emergency during my trip?
You are never alone out there. Desert Aire is rural, but cell coverage is generally solid along Highway 243 and Interstate 90, and the nearest service options are in Mattawa and Othello. Snap photos of the RV at pickup, save your host's number, and keep the RVezy support line handy before you lose signal in the canyon.

Cruise about 2 hours southeast to Walla Walla wine country, or about 3 hours west to Seattle and Puget Sound. For a longer adventure, the Columbia River Gorge into Oregon is roughly 3 hours south. nps.gov/mora/index.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Desert Aire RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost on any RV trip, so it pays to plan ahead. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A rigs typically get 6 to 10 mpg, and campervan rental Desert Aire options like Class B vans can reach 18 to 22 mpg. Washington gas prices tend to run above the national average. The closest fuel stops are in Mattawa and Royal City, with more options in Ellensburg about an hour north on Interstate 90. Top off your tank before heading into the Gorge area, where prices can spike on concert weekends.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book campgrounds near Desert Aire?
For summer weekends, book 6 to 9 months ahead, especially anything overlapping a Gorge Amphitheatre concert weekend, when sites within 30 miles sell out fast. Washington State Parks (including Wanapum and Potholes) open reservations 9 months in advance through their official portal. Grant County PUD opens Crescent Bar and Sand Hollow reservations in early spring for the May to September season. For midweek or shoulder-season trips, 2 to 4 weeks of lead time is usually plenty. If you strike out on a holiday weekend, ask your RVezy host about listings that include camping at private properties or partner sites near the Gorge.
washington.goingtocamp.com/What are driving conditions like around Desert Aire?
Driving in and around Desert Aire is refreshingly easy, with wide, mostly flat highways, light traffic, and big-sky visibility. Highway 243 runs along the Columbia River with gentle curves and minimal grades, friendly for first-time RV drivers. Interstate 90, your main connection to Seattle and Spokane, is well maintained, but watch for strong crosswinds in the Vantage area where the canyon funnels gusts; slow down and keep a firm grip on the wheel. Winter (December to February) can bring black ice on shaded sections and occasional snow over Snoqualmie Pass. Check Washington State Department of Transportation cameras and pass reports before you depart, especially for any cross-state route.
