Campgrounds and RV parks near Fox Island, WA

The shoreline drives the trip. Fox Island Sand Spit Nature Preserve offers beach access on the south end of the island, and the drive across the Fox Island Bridge frames views of Mount Rainier and the Olympic range. Downtown Gig Harbor, about ten minutes away, has a walkable waterfront, the Harbor History Museum, and kayak and paddleboard rentals. On the Key Peninsula, Penrose Point State Park has short forest loops, a saltwater beach on Mayo Cove and Carr Inlet, and shellfishing when seasons are open. Joemma Beach State Park, about five miles farther, adds a boat launch and pier. Bay Lake, a mile from Penrose, is a popular trout-fishing spot with its own launch.

Peak season runs from Memorial Day through mid-September. Penrose Point State Park is open year-round, but the campground shifts to reservable status from May 15 through September 15 and to first-come, first-served the rest of the year. Popular summer weekends and holidays fill quickly, and sites for July and August are often gone within days of the nine-month booking window opening. Late spring and early fall are the sweet spot for RV travelers who want cool temperatures, working facilities, and easier availability. Hot showers at Penrose Point run mid-May through early October, so late-fall and winter stays are best suited to self-contained rigs. Winter is the wet, dark stretch on the south Sound. State park loops remain accessible but some services are reduced, and rangers post seasonal changes on the Washington State Parks winter schedule page. Private resorts around Gig Harbor generally operate year-round.

Roads on and around Fox Island are narrow, wooded, and twisty. The campground roadways at Penrose Point are described by Washington State Parks as narrow and winding, with only a few sites able to handle longer rigs. Expect tall firs, filtered light, and moist ground. Cell coverage on the Key Peninsula is patchy in spots, and grocery runs are easiest back through Purdy or Gig Harbor. Tides matter: beaches at Penrose Point and along Carr Inlet can be muddy at low water, and shellfishing requires a current state license and an open-season check with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
