Campgrounds and RV parks near Gleed, WA

The Yakima River Canyon along State Route 821 is a headline drive, with basalt cliffs rising more than 2,000 feet, Blue Ribbon trout fishing, and family-friendly rafting between Ellensburg and Yakima. Cowiche Canyon Trail, a short drive from Gleed, offers a flat rail-trail hike suitable for kids and dogs. Yakima Sportsman State Park has stocked fishing ponds, wetland birdwatching with more than 130 recorded bird species, and a playground. Wine country is a defining draw. The Yakima Valley and Naches Heights wine regions sit within a short drive, with tasting rooms clustered around Naches, West Valley, and downtown Yakima. For longer trips, US-12 climbs west through the Naches River drainage toward White Pass, and SR-410 leads to the Chinook Pass entrance of Mount Rainier National Park.

The Yakima Valley has a semi-arid climate with hot, dry summers and cold winters. Peak RV season runs from late May through September, when daytime highs sit in the 80s Fahrenheit and skies are mostly clear. July and August are the driest and hottest months, so shade, awnings, and hookups for air conditioning matter at valley campgrounds. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for family trips. April through early June brings wildflowers in Cowiche Canyon and reliable trout flows in the Yakima River. September and October cool quickly, with harvest season at valley wineries and orchards, and Chinook Pass on SR-410 typically closes for the winter sometime in mid-November and reopens in late May. Winter is cold and quiet. Snow, freezing fog, and hard freezes are common from December through February. Some private RV parks stay open year-round with winterized hookups, while Yakima Sportsman State Park is closed from November 1 through March 1, and BLM sites in the Yakima River Canyon shift to first-come, first-served status in the off-season.

Gleed itself is rural and residential, mostly orchards, small farms, and homes along Old Naches Highway and US-12. Grocery stores, fuel, and RV supplies are a short drive south into Yakima or east into Selah. Cell service is reliable along the valley floor but degrades in the surrounding canyons and forest roads. Sites at nearby private parks tend to be level gravel or paved pads with 30- and 50-amp service, full hookups, and Wi-Fi. Yakima Sportsman State Park has 37 full-hookup sites that accommodate rigs up to 60 feet, plus 37 standard sites and a dump station, and the grounds are irrigated and shaded, unusual for the surrounding desert. Summer wildfire smoke can drift into the valley from Cascade fires, so RV travelers should check air quality and current burn bans before arrival, particularly in late July and August.
