Camping near North Yelm, Washington
North Yelm sits in Thurston County in the lower Nisqually River valley, roughly halfway between Olympia and the Nisqually Entrance to Mount Rainier National Park. The Nisqually watershed reaches from the glaciers of Mount Rainier through Ashford, Elbe, Eatonville, Yelm, McKenna and Roy to the Nisqually delta on Puget Sound, and includes the Nisqually Indian Reservation and parts of Lacey and DuPont. That puts RV travellers within easy reach of river camping, forested state parks, Puget Sound shoreline, and the southwest side of Mount Rainier.
Most campgrounds in the immediate area are private RV parks and small resorts. Riverbend Campground sits directly on the Nisqually River and offers nightly, weekly and monthly rates. WA Land Yacht Harbor RV Park and Event Center, Offut Lake Resort, Sound View Camp and Retreat Center, and Henleys Silver Lake Resort Campground round out the nearby options, with a mix of full-hookup pads, lake access, and rustic cabin-and-tent sites.
For state-run camping, Millersylvania State Park is an old-growth forest camping park on the shores of Deep Lake with two swimming beaches, miles of forested hiking and biking trails and lies just south near Tenino. Mount Rainier National Park sits within a manageable day's drive to the east.
Things to do near North Yelm
River recreation dominates the area. Riverbend Campground draws anglers for salmon and trout on the Nisqually River, and a Washington State fishing license is required for anyone over the age of 15. Paddlers use the Nisqually River Water Trail, with put-ins at McKenna Park and Nisqually Park at Yelm Powerhouse.
Day trips are the strength of a North Yelm basecamp. Mount Rainier National Park is the headline draw, with old-growth forests, waterfalls, and sub-alpine meadows where wildflowers peak in July and August. The Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge, Wolf Haven International, and Northwest Trek Wildlife Park are all within a short drive.
Closer in, Offut Lake and Silver Lake offer flat-water fishing and swimming, and Millersylvania State Park is an old-growth forest camping park on the shores of Deep Lake with two swimming beaches, miles of forested hiking and biking trails with a watercraft launch.

The Nisqually valley has a classic Puget Sound climate: wet, mild winters and short, dry summers. In Yelm the summers are short, warm, dry, and partly cloudy, and the winters are very cold, wet, and overcast. Peak camping season runs from late May through Labor Day, when state park loops are fully open and Mount Rainier's road-in campgrounds unlock.
Mount Rainier's season is compressed by snow. The camping season starts late May depending on snow melt and goes until October. Check the Operating Hours of the campgrounds in between seasons to confirm open status. Ohanapecosh Campground is closed through spring/early summer 2026 for rehabilitation. No reopening date has been confirmed. Monitor NPS alerts before your trip. Plan around Cougar Rock or White River if the park is the trip anchor.
Shoulder seasons trade weather for space. September brings drier days, fall colour along the rivers, and returning salmon runs. Winter camping is possible at year-round private parks like Riverbend, and at Millersylvania a limited winter loop stays open, but expect rain, short days, and reduced amenities at most parks.

We had such a great weekend camping in the Memory Maker! Danielle has thought of everything when it comes to making life easy while you are “roughing it”. We felt cozy and comfortable sleeping as a family of 5. It was easy to pull behind our Tahoe as well. Great experience all around, we already have our next trip booked!

How to book campgrounds near North Yelm
Washington state parks use a single reservation platform at washington.goingtocamp.com. Reservations can be made up to nine months in advance of the first date of your trip. You can reserve Retreat Centers up to one year in advance. Campsite reservations can be made until 2 p.m. on your arrival date. Phone reservations go through (888) 226-7688. A Discover Pass is required for day-use vehicle access to Washington state parks. Millersylvania campsites are reservable mid May to mid September and are first-come first serve from mid September to mid May.
Mount Rainier campgrounds book through Recreation.gov. Cougar Rock accepts reservations for roughly late June through early September through Recreation.gov on a 6-month rolling window, with new dates opening at 7:00 AM PT each day. Demand is high, weekend sites can fill within minutes of release. White River Campground is FCFS for the entire season, no advance reservations are offered.
Private parks like Riverbend Campground, WA Land Yacht Harbor RV Park and Event Center, Offut Lake Resort, and Henleys Silver Lake Resort Campground book directly through each operator's website or phone line.
What to expect on the ground
Hookups vary sharply between private and public sites. Riverbend Campground offers a mix of full and partial hookup RV pads plus tent sites, with pull-through options for larger rigs. Millersylvania State Park campground has 123 campsites (48 with electric hookups) for tents, trailers and RVs next to Deep Lake.
National park sites are rustic. None of the park's front-country campgrounds offer electrical hookups, water hookups, or dump stations. The RV water fill station at Cougar Rock is also closed. RVs must be fully self-contained. Maximum lengths are 35 ft at Cougar Rock, 32 ft at Ohanapecosh, and 27 ft at White River.
Cell service is patchy inside the park and at some rural sites, so download maps and reservation confirmations before leaving town.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near North Yelm, WA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in North Yelm, WA?
RV rental in North Yelm is one of the more affordable ways to explore the South Sound and Mount Rainier corridor. Travel trailers typically start around $90 to $130 per night, Class C motorhomes range from about $150 to $250, and larger Class A rigs run $250 to $400+ depending on age, size and amenities. For a cheap RV rental in North Yelm, look at midweek dates, shoulder months like April or late September, and pop-up trailers or smaller campervans. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book and Delivery to compare total trip costs (delivery often beats paying for a tow vehicle), then message the host to ask about weekly discounts. You can be booked in under 10 minutes.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=North%20Yelm%2C%20WashingtonDo I need a special license to rent an RV in North Yelm, Washington?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in North Yelm for virtually every rig listed on RVezy. Washington only requires a Commercial Driver License (CDL) for vehicles with a manufacturer's weight rating over 26,001 pounds, and the Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, and most Class A motorhomes available locally come in well under that. You'll need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and we'll verify your ID right inside the platform. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home license and you're set. Most first-timers are surprised how straightforward the process is.
dol.wa.gov/driver-licenses-and-permits/commercial-driver-licenses-cdl/do-i-need-cdlWhat protection is included with my North Yelm RV rental?
Every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road from North Yelm with real peace of mind. You choose your coverage level at checkout (not the host), so you can match the plan to your comfort level and budget, and the plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip up to the plan limits. While it is not traditional auto insurance, it provides meaningful financial protection if something unexpected happens on your way to Mount Rainier or out along the Nisqually River. Pro tip: review the three protection tiers side by side before booking so you can pick the right balance of deductible and coverage for your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my North Yelm RV trip plans change?
You can book your RV rental in North Yelm with confidence because RVezy (not the individual host) sets a clear cancellation policy that applies across every listing. There is a money-back grace period right after booking, and additional flexibility based on how far you are from your trip start date. If your host cancels, RVezy will refund you or help you rebook so an early-season Cascade storm or sudden change of plans does not have to mean losing your trip. Full details live in the RVezy Help Center, but the takeaway is simple: booking is low-risk, and our support team is here before, during and after your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in North Yelm?
Absolutely, North Yelm is a fantastic launchpad for a dog-friendly road trip. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see hosts who welcome pets, then message them about any size or breed preferences. Once you are booked, your pup will love nearby leash-friendly stops like the Yelm-Tenino Trail and Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge boardwalks, plus dog-friendly trails at Tolmie State Park. Washington State Parks allow leashed dogs in most campgrounds and on most trails, making a pet-friendly RV rental in North Yelm a stress-free way to travel with the whole family. Pro tip: pack a towel by the door, the Cascade foothills mean muddy paws are part of the adventure.
parks.wa.gov/know-before-you-go/rules-regulations/pets-parksCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway near North Yelm?
Yes, RV delivery in North Yelm is one of the most popular options on the platform, and it is a game-changer for first-timers. Many local hosts will drive the RV to your campground, your driveway, or a staging spot near I-5, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means you never have to tow or maneuver a big rig yourself if you do not want to. Use the Delivery filter when searching, and message the host with your destination (Millersylvania, Alder Lake Park, or even Mount Rainier's Cougar Rock) to confirm distance and any delivery fee. It is the easiest entry point to RV camping in North Yelm.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=North%20Yelm%2C%20WashingtonHow far can I drive on a North Yelm RV trip, and what mileage policy should I expect?
You've got incredible range from North Yelm, and many hosts offer generous daily mileage allowances or even an RV rental with unlimited mileage option (just filter for it or ask the host directly). From North Yelm you're about 35 miles to Mount Rainier's Nisqually entrance, 65 miles to Tacoma's waterfront, 90 miles to Seattle, 110 miles to Mount St. Helens, and roughly 145 miles to Olympic National Park's Hoh Rainforest. If you go over the included miles, extra miles are usually just $0.30 to $0.50 each. Pro tip: map your full route before booking and message the host with your plan, they'll often bundle in extra miles up front for a better rate.
nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near North Yelm to park my RV?
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in North Yelm. Top picks include Millersylvania State Park (about 20 miles west, on Deep Lake with hookup sites and old-growth forest), Alder Lake Park (about an hour south with Mount Rainier views and full hookups), Offut Lake Resort (about 15 minutes away, a family favorite with fishing and full hookups), and American Heritage Campground near Tumwater (open year-round with a heated pool). Inside Mount Rainier National Park, Cougar Rock Campground offers a classic forested experience with no hookups. Pro tip: book Washington State Parks up to 9 months out through the official reservation system, summer weekends sell out fast.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks/state-parks/millersylvania-state-parkWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in North Yelm, WA?
Late June through mid-September is the sweet spot for RV rental in Washington's South Sound, with North Yelm averaging highs near the upper 70s in July and August and very little rain. May and late September are the smart-money shoulder months with daytime highs in the 60s and low 70s, wildflowers or fall colors, and noticeably cheaper rates. Winter trips (December through February) are absolutely doable thanks to mild lowland temps in the 30s and 40s, just choose a four-season RV with a furnace and insulated tanks. Pro tip: time your trip for late July or early August to catch peak wildflower bloom at Mount Rainier's Paradise meadows, one of the most magical sights in the Pacific Northwest.
weather.gov/sew/I've never rented an RV before. Is North Yelm a good place to start?
Yes, and here is why you will feel confident from the start. If it is your first time renting an RV, North Yelm is ideal: roads are wide, traffic outside of I-5 is light, and you are surrounded by easy-to-reach campgrounds within a 30-minute drive. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup (or at delivery) covering the furnace, water system, slide-outs, and dump procedure, and you can message them anytime during your trip with questions. Many hosts also offer delivery and setup so you can skip the driving entirely on day one. Pro tip: do a short shakedown night at Offut Lake or Millersylvania before heading deeper into the mountains, you will dial in your comfort fast.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=North%20Yelm%2C%20WashingtonWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are covered around the clock. Every booking on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Highway 7 toward Mount Rainier or a dead battery at Alder Lake means one phone call and help is dispatched. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app, and most North Yelm hosts respond quickly and can troubleshoot common things like resetting the GFCI or relighting the water heater pilot. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after every trip too. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN and the roadside assistance number on day one so you are never scrambling later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my North Yelm RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate road trips are very popular, and an RV road trip from North Yelm opens up the entire Pacific Northwest. You can freely drive into Oregon (Portland is about 2.5 hours south), Idaho, and across Washington with no extra paperwork. Crossing into Canada (Vancouver, BC is roughly 3.5 hours north) is often allowed but depends on the host and the insurance terms, so just message them before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: if you're headed to BC, bring your passport, the RV's registration and insurance paperwork (your host provides this), and a letter of permission from the host to smooth your border crossing.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-go/your-tripWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and how should I budget for gas?
Realistic expectations make for a happy budget. From North Yelm, plan on about 7 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class A motorhome, 10 to 14 mpg for a Class C, 16 to 20 mpg for a Class B campervan, and 12 to 18 mpg for your tow vehicle if you're pulling a travel trailer. Washington gas prices typically run a bit above the national average, so a 300-mile round trip to Mount Rainier and back might cost $80 to $130 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Yelm or Lacey before heading toward Ashford or Packwood, prices climb noticeably as you get closer to the national park gateway towns.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds for my North Yelm RV trip?
Book early and you'll get the best sites. Washington State Parks open reservations up to 9 months in advance through the official Washington Going to Camp system, and prime summer weekends at Millersylvania, Alder Lake Park, and Mount Rainier's Cougar Rock often fill within hours of opening. For July and August trips, aim to book by January or February. Private parks like Offut Lake Resort and American Heritage typically open bookings 6 to 12 months out. Pro tip: if your dates are sold out, set up a free cancellation alert (services like Campnab monitor openings) and check Sunday evenings, when many weekend campers drop sites they couldn't fill.
parks.wa.gov/passes-permits/reservations/making-reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around North Yelm and the route to Mount Rainier?
You will love how manageable the local driving is. North Yelm sits on flat prairie at about 350 feet of elevation, with wide two-lane state highways (SR 507 and SR 510) carrying light traffic outside rush hour. The main route to Mount Rainier via SR 7 and SR 706 climbs steadily toward Paradise at about 5,400 feet, with curves and grades but no hairpins for the typical RV. I-5 is just 20 minutes west and gets congested toward Tacoma and Seattle on weekday afternoons, so leave early. Watch for occasional fog on prairie mornings and elk crossings near Eatonville. Pro tip: check the WSDOT real-time traffic map before any Seattle or Tacoma run, it saves hours.
wsdot.com/travel/real-time/mapWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near North Yelm?
Most campgrounds in the area offer everything you need for a comfortable stay. Washington State Parks like Millersylvania provide flush toilets, hot showers, potable water fill stations, and a dump station, with many sites offering 30-amp electrical and water hookups. Private parks such as Offut Lake Resort typically add 50-amp service, sewer hookups, Wi-Fi, laundry, and propane refills. Quiet hours at Washington State Parks run 10 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., and generator use is limited to daytime hours. Pro tip: top off fresh water and dump tanks before leaving the campground, fill and dump stations get crowded on Sunday mornings as weekend campers head home.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks/state-parks/millersylvania-state-parkWhat's typically included inside a North Yelm RV rental?
You will be impressed by how move-in ready local rigs are. A typical motorhome rental in North Yelm comes with sleeping for 4 to 8, a full kitchen (fridge/freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink, basic cookware), a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with furnace and air conditioning, and seatbelted travel seats. Many include a TV, Wi-Fi hotspots, or solar packages, and generators are common in Class A and C rigs. Travel trailers and fifth wheels offer similar interior amenities and are towed by your truck or delivered by the host. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list and message the host about anything important to you (Starlink, outdoor kitchen, awning lights) before you book, the variety on RVezy is huge.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=North%20Yelm%2C%20WashingtonWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in North Yelm offer some fantastic optional extras to round out your trip. Common add-ons include camp chair and table kits, kitchen packages with cookware and dishes, bedding and linen packages, bike racks, generators, propane top-offs, and dump-station service so you return the RV without that chore. Pickup is usually at the host's property in or near Yelm, but many also offer RV delivery in North Yelm for a flat fee or per-mile rate. Mileage policies vary by listing, from a set number of miles per day to unlimited mileage, so check the listing details. Pro tip: bundling delivery, setup, and dump service is often well worth it for a stress-free first trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=North%20Yelm%2C%20WashingtonHow does payment and the security deposit work for RV rental in Washington?
Payment is simple and secure: everything runs through the RVezy platform with no cash changing hands. You pay your trip total (rental rate, protection plan, taxes, any add-ons) at booking using a supported credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit is authorized separately before pickup to cover items like missing equipment or fuel and dump service shortfalls, and it is released back to your card after the trip if everything checks out. Pro tip: do a quick photo walk-around at pickup and drop-off with your host, this 5-minute habit prevents most deposit disputes and keeps the experience smooth for both sides.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in North Yelm in winter, and how do I stay warm?
Yes, winter RV camping in North Yelm is one of the region's best-kept secrets. Lowland winter temperatures average highs in the low 40s and overnight lows around freezing, with only modest snowfall in town most years, very manageable. Look for listings labeled four-season or all-weather; these have heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and propane furnaces that easily keep the interior cozy. Many local campgrounds such as Offut Lake Resort and American Heritage stay open year-round with full hookups including shore power. Pro tip: ask the host for a heated water hose and an extra propane tank, and you will be sipping coffee while snow dusts Mount Rainier in the distance, pure magic.
