Campgrounds and RV parks near Sunnyside, WA

Wine tasting is the dominant draw. The Yakima Valley AVA and the Prosser cluster of tasting rooms are within a short drive of every campground on this page, and Wine Country RV Park in Prosser sits close to a cluster of tasting rooms with additional wineries a short drive away. Beyond wine, the valley is a major fruit- and hop-growing region, with farm stands, u-pick orchards, and hop-country breweries open through summer and early fall. Families staying at Yakima Sportsman State Park can walk flat interpretive trails, fish a juvenile pond that may be stocked with rainbow trout, and birdwatch in a wetland that hosts more than 130 recorded bird species. The Yakima River corridor also supports floating, kayaking, and fly fishing, and the Rattlesnake Hills and Horse Heaven Hills provide easy scenic drives.

The Sunnyside area has a classic semi-arid pattern: hot, dry summers and cold, damp winters. July highs average in the upper 80s Fahrenheit with very little rain, while December and January highs sit in the mid to upper 30s with the year's heaviest precipitation. Snowfall is light overall but concentrated from December through February. Late spring and early fall are the strongest windows for RV travel. May and June bring long daylight, blooming orchards, and comfortable daytime temperatures, and September pairs harvest activity at valley wineries with cooler nights and thinner crowds. Peak booking pressure at Yakima Sportsman State Park and at the Prosser-area parks lines up with summer weekends, the Central Washington State Fair, and major wine-release weekends. Winter travel is workable at year-round private parks in Sunnyside and Prosser, but Yakima Sportsman State Park operates on a seasonal schedule and is closed to camping through the coldest months.

Most parks near Sunnyside are open, level, and easy to navigate in a large rig. Sunnyside RV Park and Wine Country RV Park are both set up for big rigs with full hookups and pull-through sites, and cell coverage across the valley is generally strong on major carriers. Yakima Sportsman State Park has a mix of standard and full-hookup sites that accommodate RVs up to 60 feet, with both pull-through and back-in configurations. Facilities are older in places, showers operate on a token system, and rangers advise watching for rattlesnakes in warm months and mosquitoes near the wetland ponds in early summer. Summer heat is real: shade is limited outside the state park, so plan for A/C use and stock water before arrival.
