Campgrounds and RV parks near University Place, WA

Water access drives most trips. Dash Point is a hotspot for skim boarding, and paddling is possible for smaller craft like canoes and kayaks that do not require a watercraft launch. Fishing from shore targets salmon and sea-run cutthroat, and low tides reveal wide sandy flats for beachcombing. Dash Point offers 11 miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails, and Penrose Point adds forested loops with beach access at low tide. Families often pair a campground stay with Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium, the Museum of Glass, LeMay Car Museum, and the waterfront in downtown Gig Harbor. From a Puyallup base, downtown Tacoma, the Tacoma Dome, and the Washington State Fair grounds are all close by. Mount Rainier National Park is roughly a two-hour drive southeast and works as a long day trip.

Summer is the peak window. July and August are the driest months and deliver the warmest, most reliable weather, which is why waterfront state park sites book out well in advance. Shoulder seasons work for renters who want lower demand and are willing to plan around rain, with cool showery weather typical through spring and steady rainfall returning in October and November. Dash Point State Park is open year-round, with 114 standard campsites, 27 utility campsites, one dump station, four restrooms, and six showers. Penrose Point runs on a seasonal schedule for services: showers are open May 15 through October 1, and campsites are reservable May 15 through September 15, then first-come, first-served the rest of the year. Winter camping is possible at lower elevations thanks to the mild marine climate, but expect frequent rain, short daylight, and occasional wind. Check the Washington State Parks winter schedule for reduced services before booking, and confirm hookup availability at private parks for cold, wet stretches.

Most nearby state park campsites are wooded and shaded rather than open. At Penrose Point, the campground is in the woods with all sites shady or partly shady, none of the campsites are on the water though the beach is a short walk away, typical sites accommodate a vehicle or combination up to 35 feet, and roadways are narrow and winding. Dash Point accommodates RVs and combinations of 32 feet or less in length, so larger rigs should confirm site dimensions before booking. For full hookups and easier maneuvering with big rigs, private parks are the better fit. Majestic Manor RV Park features 88 full-hookup sites for rigs up to 75 feet, with 30/50-amp service, WiFi, laundry, a pool, and a dump station. Expect cell service to be reliable near University Place, Gig Harbor, and Puyallup, and spottier on the Key Peninsula.
