Campgrounds near Vashon, Washington
Vashon Island sits in central Puget Sound between Seattle and Tacoma, reachable only by Washington State Ferries. The island itself has no state park campground with RV hookups, so most RV travelers base at mainland or Kitsap Peninsula parks a short ferry ride or drive away and use Vashon as a day-trip destination.
The closest developed campgrounds cluster on both sides of the Sound. Dash Point State Park sits on Puget Sound in western Washington with 3,301 feet of saltwater shoreline and accommodates RVs and combinations of 32 feet or less. Saltwater State Park offers waterfront camping with showers and a dump station just north of Federal Way. Across the water on the Kitsap Peninsula, Manchester State Park and Illahee State Park sit on Puget Sound near Bremerton, and Illahee has year-round camping with 23 standard sites plus one full-hookup site.
For full hookups and resort amenities, Gig Harbor RV Resort sits northwest of Tacoma with 30- and 50-amp service, water, sewer, laundry, and a dog park.
Things to do near Vashon
Puget Sound shoreline is the main draw. Dash Point State Park is known for its extensive sand flats at low tide, skimboarding, beachcombing, and roughly 11 miles of forested hiking and biking trails. Saltwater State Park has McSorley Creek, an underwater artificial reef popular with divers, and shoreline for beachcombing and picnicking.
On the Kitsap side, Illahee State Park offers a fishing pier and boat launch on Port Orchard Bay and old-growth forest that includes one of the largest Pacific yew trees in the country. Manchester State Park adds wooded hiking trails, over 3,400 feet of saltwater shoreline on Rich Passage, and interpretive access to a historic torpedo warehouse and former gun battery.
On Vashon itself, day trips reach Point Robinson lighthouse, Maury Island Marine Park, small farms, and shops in Vashon town.

Summer is the drawing card. July and August bring the driest, warmest weather in the Puget Sound region, the most comfortable saltwater conditions, and peak demand for waterfront and full-hookup sites. Booking early matters: many desirable waterfront and full-hookup Washington State Park sites fill quickly for summer weekends and holidays, and the reservation window opens nine months ahead.
Spring and fall are the quieter shoulder seasons. Weather swings between sun and rain, but weekday sites are much easier to secure and wildlife along the shoreline is active. Manchester State Park accepts reservations April through October; outside that window individual campsites shift to first-come, first-served, so off-season trips still work with flexible plans.
Winters are cool and wet, with the region's heaviest rainfall from November through January. Illahee State Park stays open for year-round camping, and Gig Harbor RV Resort operates year-round, making off-season RV trips practical when other parks scale back.

We had such a great weekend camping in the Memory Maker! Danielle has thought of everything when it comes to making life easy while you are “roughing it”. We felt cozy and comfortable sleeping as a family of 5. It was easy to pull behind our Tahoe as well. Great experience all around, we already have our next trip booked!
Phil G. - Aug 2025
Danielle is a great host! The trailer was wonderfully laid out and perfect for a family of four. It was very clean and everything worked perfectly! Our family had a great time and would definitely rent from Danielle again!

How to book
State park sites at Dash Point, Saltwater, Manchester, and Illahee are booked through the Washington State Parks reservation system at washington.goingtocamp.com or by phone at 888-CAMPOUT (888-226-7688). Reservations can be made up to nine months in advance of the first date of the trip, and same-day online reservations are accepted until 2 p.m. on the arrival date if space remains. Unreserved sites drop to first-come, first-served after that.
Gig Harbor RV Resort books directly through the operator's website or by phone rather than the state portal.
A Discover Pass is required for day-use parking at Washington State Parks and is included with a paid overnight camping reservation.
What to expect
Expect a maritime setting: tall second-growth forest, saltwater beaches, and cool mornings even in summer. State park campgrounds in this area tilt toward standard and partial-hookup sites rather than full hookups. Dash Point accommodates RVs up to 32 feet, and Illahee has just one full-hookup site among its 23 standard sites, so longer rigs and hookup seekers should confirm site dimensions before booking.
Cell service is generally reliable near the cities but weaker under heavy tree cover. Interior roads at Illahee and Dash Point are narrow, and pads may need extra leveling blocks. Ferry service to Vashon adds cost and length considerations for towed RVs.
Pets are welcome at all listed campgrounds on leash, and camp hosts at the state parks typically sell firewood on site.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Vashon, WA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Vashon, WA?
RV rental in Vashon, WA is surprisingly affordable for such a scenic Puget Sound destination. On RVezy, you'll generally find campervans starting around $95-$150 per night, travel trailers in the $120-$200 range, and larger Class C motorhomes from $200-$350 per night. Because Vashon is a small island community, many travelers actually book their RV on the mainland in Seattle or Tacoma and bring it over on the Washington State Ferries. To get a cheap RV rental in Vashon, aim for shoulder season (April or October), book midweek, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Pro tip: bundling delivery to the Fauntleroy ferry terminal often costs less than driving back and forth yourself.
wsdot.wa.gov/travel/washington-state-ferriesWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Vashon?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Vashon, WA. Washington does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for motorhomes or travel trailers used recreationally. You'll need to be at least 25 years old to book on RVezy, and we verify your ID securely through the platform during checkout, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) for a smooth handover. Most first-time renters are surprised how quickly the process moves, leaving you more time to catch the ferry and explore the island.
dol.wa.gov/driver-licenses-and-permitsIs my RV rental protected if something goes wrong on Vashon?
Yes, every RV rental in Vashon booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance. During checkout you choose the protection level that fits your trip, and that plan helps cover accidental damage to the RV during your rental. Coverage tiers and details are set by RVezy, not by individual hosts, so you stay in control of how much peace of mind you want. This is especially reassuring on a Vashon RV trip, where narrow island shoulders and tight ferry loading lanes can make first-time renters a little cautious. Pro tip: review the protection tiers carefully before booking so you know exactly what is covered before you drive aboard the Washington State Ferries.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Vashon RV rental?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy, not individual hosts. Every reservation includes a short grace period after booking during which you can cancel for a full refund, and after that your refund depends on how far in advance you cancel. If a host ever has to cancel, RVezy refunds the guest or provides travel credit so your plans stay protected. Because Vashon is only reachable by Washington State Ferries, plans sometimes shift, and RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip to help. Pro tip: book early for summer weekends, since Vashon stays fill up fast around the Strawberry Festival in mid-July.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Vashon?
Yes, Vashon is a famously dog-loving community and pet-friendly RV rental in Vashon is easy to find on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to see hosts who welcome dogs, then message the host to confirm any pet fee or size notes. Once you arrive, your pup will love beach walks at Point Robinson Park, trails at Fisher Pond Preserve, and dog-welcoming patios in Vashon town. Washington State Ferries also allow leashed pets in designated outdoor areas and on the car deck with you. Pro tip: pack an old towel, Vashon's pebble beaches mean salty, sandy paws after every adventure.
vashonparkdistrict.org/parks/Can a host deliver the RV to me in Vashon?
Yes, RV delivery in Vashon is one of the easiest ways to skip the stress of driving an unfamiliar rig onto a ferry. Many RVezy hosts in the Seattle and Tacoma area offer delivery directly to Vashon campsites, private properties, or even the Fauntleroy or Point Defiance ferry terminals, then set up the RV and walk you through every system before they leave. Just filter listings by Delivery and message the host with your address or campground name to get a quote. This is hugely popular for first time renting an RV trips, weddings, and family reunions on the island. Pro tip: ask about a full setup package with leveling, awning, and a propane check so you can start enjoying the salt air immediately.
wsdot.wa.gov/travel/washington-state-ferries/rider-information/commercial-and-oversized-vehicles-ferriesHow far can I drive on a Vashon RV trip?
You have plenty of range to explore. Many RVezy hosts in the Vashon and Seattle area offer generous daily mileage allotments, and some list RV rental with unlimited mileage, ideal for longer Pacific Northwest loops. Vashon Island itself is only about 13 miles long, so you will burn very few miles on the island. Day-trip distances from Vashon include Seattle (about 25 miles via the Fauntleroy ferry), Tacoma (about 15 miles via the Point Defiance ferry), Mount Rainier National Park (around 90 miles), and Olympic National Park's Hurricane Ridge (about 110 miles plus a ferry). Pro tip: check each listing's mileage details and message the host directly if you are planning a bigger loop down to the Oregon Coast.
nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Vashon, WA?
You have wonderful options for RV camping in Vashon and the surrounding Puget Sound. On the island itself, full-hookup RV sites are limited (Vashon Park District offers walk-in kayak/bike sites only at Point Robinson and Lisabeula), so most RV travelers stay at nearby parks. Top picks include Dash Point State Park in Federal Way with forested sites and beach access, Saltwater State Park in Des Moines with utility hookups and Puget Sound views, Penrose Point State Park on the Key Peninsula for quiet waterfront camping, Manchester State Park near Port Orchard, and Gig Harbor RV Resort for full hookups and easy ferry access. Pro tip: reserve through the Washington State Parks system up to nine months in advance for summer weekends.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks/state-parks/dash-point-state-parkWhen is the best time for an RV trip to Vashon?
Late June through mid-September is the sweet spot for RV camping in Vashon, with daytime highs typically in the low 70s Fahrenheit, much drier weather, and Puget Sound sunsets stretching past 9 p.m. May and early June bring blooming gardens and quieter ferry lines, while September offers warm afternoons, ripe blackberries, and golden light over Quartermaster Harbor. Winters are mild (40s to low 50s) but wet, with frequent rain from November through March, ideal for cozy campervan rental Vashon getaways if you do not mind moody weather. Pro tip: visit during the Vashon Island Strawberry Festival in mid-July for the island's signature event, or aim for the December holiday studio tour when local artists open their workshops.
weather.gov/sew/I've never driven an RV before, will I be okay on Vashon?
You'll do great, and Vashon is honestly one of the friendlier places to start. Your RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, hookups, slide-outs, and the propane system, plus they're a phone call away during your trip. For first time renting an RV, choose a Class B campervan or small Class C, which handle like a large van and fit easily on island roads. Vashon Highway SW is the main road, mostly two-lane with low speed limits (35-45 mph) and almost no traffic by Seattle standards. If you're nervous about driving onto a ferry, ask about RV delivery in Vashon so a host handles that part. Pro tip: practice backing into one open parking spot before you leave the rental site, it builds confidence fast.
wsdot.wa.gov/travel/washington-state-ferries/rider-information/first-time-ridersWhat happens if I break down during my Vashon RV rental?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Vashon Highway, a dead battery at Point Robinson, or a mechanical hiccup is one phone call away from help. Your host is also a direct resource for questions about quirks specific to their rig. Because Vashon is an island, dispatch may coordinate with a Tacoma or Seattle-area service provider via the ferry, so build a little extra time into the timeline. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip if you need additional help. Pro tip: take quick photos of tire pressure and fluid levels at pickup so you can flag any small changes early.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trips from Vashon Island?
An RV road trip from Vashon opens up some of America's most stunning scenery. Top routes include: Mount Rainier National Park (around 90 miles, 2 hours via the Point Defiance ferry) for alpine wildflowers at Paradise; Olympic National Park (about 110 miles plus a ferry) for Hurricane Ridge and the Hoh Rainforest; the North Cascades Highway loop (around 180 miles to Newhalem) with jaw-dropping mountain passes; the Washington Coast at Long Beach (about 175 miles) for clam digging and dune driving; and the Oregon Coast through Astoria (around 200 miles). Cross-border travel to Canada may be allowed by some hosts (message them first), but travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: book Mount Rainier campsites at recreation.gov six months ahead.
nps.gov/olym/planyourvisit/index.htmHow much fuel will I burn on a Vashon RV trip and what should I budget?
Fuel is one of your biggest variable costs, but Vashon trips tend to be gentle on the gas tank because the island is small. Expect roughly 8-10 mpg for a Class C motorhome, 10-14 mpg for a travel trailer setup, and 15-20 mpg for a campervan. Washington gas prices run higher than the national average (often $4.30-$4.90 per gallon in the Seattle-Tacoma area), and there are only a couple of gas stations on Vashon itself, so fill up on the mainland in West Seattle or Tacoma before boarding the ferry to lock in better prices. Pro tip: download GasBuddy and plan a Costco fill-up in Tukwila or Tacoma if you have a membership, savings of 30-50 cents per gallon are common.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Vashon?
Book sooner than you think, especially for summer. Washington State Parks (including Dash Point, Saltwater, Penrose Point, and Manchester) accept reservations up to nine months in advance through the official parks system, and prime summer weekends often sell out the moment the booking window opens. Private parks like Gig Harbor RV Resort and Sun Outdoors Gig Harbor typically open bookings even further out. For a smooth motorhome rental Vashon experience, lock in your campsite first, then book your RV around it. Pro tip: if summer sites are gone, set a calendar alert for Tuesday and Wednesday mornings (cancellations post midweek), or aim for a Sunday-Thursday stay when availability is dramatically better.
parks.wa.gov/reservationsWhat is it like driving an RV on Vashon and the Washington State Ferries?
Driving on Vashon is mellow, with just a handful of main roads and a famously slow island pace. The catch is getting there: Vashon is only reachable by Washington State Ferries from Fauntleroy in West Seattle, Point Defiance in Tacoma, or Southworth. Vehicle reservations are not available for Vashon routes, so it is first-come, first-served, and arriving 45 to 60 minutes early on summer weekends is wise. Check WSDOT alerts for tide-related loading restrictions that can occasionally affect longer or low-clearance rigs at Fauntleroy and Tahlequah. Ferry fares are based on vehicle length, so measure accurately. Pro tip: a mid-morning or early-afternoon weekday sailing usually skips commuter crowds entirely.
wsdot.wa.gov/travel/washington-state-ferries/schedulesWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Vashon?
Campgrounds in the Vashon and South Puget Sound region range from primitive to fully equipped. Washington State Parks like Dash Point and Saltwater offer water and electric hookups at many sites, flush toilets, hot showers, and on-site dump stations. Private parks like Gig Harbor RV Resort add full sewer hookups, Wi-Fi, laundry, and 30/50 amp service. For where to park an RV in Vashon itself, options are limited mostly to private hosted sites since the island has no full-hookup public RV park, so plan to dump and refill water on the mainland before crossing. Pro tip: the dump station at Dash Point State Park is open year-round, making it a smart pit stop before catching the ferry back to Vashon.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks/state-parks/saltwater-state-parkWhat features and amenities come with a Vashon RV rental?
You will be well-equipped for any Vashon RV trip. Most RVezy rentals near Vashon include a full kitchen (fridge, stovetop, microwave, sink, cookware), a bathroom with toilet and shower, sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on size, climate control, and seatbelts for travel passengers. Many also include a generator, solar setup, outdoor awning, propane fire pit, or a TV and Wi-Fi hotspot, perfect for rainy Puget Sound evenings. Travel trailers usually require a tow vehicle, while motorhomes are drive-and-go. Class B campervan rental Vashon options are especially popular for couples crossing on the ferry. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list and message the host about extras like kayak racks, beach chairs, or bike storage, since paddling Quartermaster Harbor is a Vashon must-do.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Vashon%2C%20WashingtonWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Vashon RV rental?
Hosts offer a wide range of extras to customize your trip. Common add-ons when you rent an RV in Vashon include delivery and setup, generator use, propane refills, linens and kitchen kits, bike racks, kayaks, and pet fees. Mileage policies vary by listing, with some including 100 to 150 free miles per day and others offering unlimited mileage packages for longer Pacific Northwest loops. Pickup and dropoff is usually at the host's home, but many will meet you at the Fauntleroy, Point Defiance, or Southworth ferry terminals for an added fee. Pro tip: bundle delivery with a linen package on your first booking so you arrive at your campsite ready to relax, with no setup learning curve required.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Vashon%2C%20WashingtonHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment on RVezy is straightforward and secure. When you book an RV rental in Vashon, your payment is processed through the RVezy platform rather than directly to the host, giving you a clear record and built-in protection. A security deposit is held separately from your booking payment, typically authorized on your credit card shortly before the trip and released after the RV is returned in good condition. Deposit amounts vary by RV class and host. To avoid issues, do a thorough video walkaround at pickup and dropoff. Pro tip: return the RV with propane, generator hours, and fuel topped off as requested by your host so your full deposit is released quickly after your family RV trip Vashon style.
