Campgrounds and RV parks near Benwood, WV

The Ohio River shoreline anchors most trip planning. Nearby Moundsville is home to the Grave Creek Mound, one of the largest conical burial mounds in North America, and the former West Virginia Penitentiary, which runs guided tours. Wheeling adds Oglebay Resort, Wheeling Island, and the Wheeling Heritage Trail for cycling along the river. Outdoor options cluster around Grand Vue Park, with a zip line canopy tour, disc golf, and mountain bike trails. Barkcamp State Park in Ohio offers a 6-mile mountain bike trail that loops through rugged woodlands and skirts the lakeshore, along with a bridle trail that meanders along the entire lakeshore. A 700-foot beach provides swimming and sunbathing, and anglers will find bass, bluegill, catfish, crappie, and saugeye.

The main RV season in the northern Ohio Valley runs from late April through October. Summer brings warm, humid days with afternoon thunderstorms, and the maximum average precipitation occurs in July. Sites at popular parks like Barkcamp fill on holiday weekends, and reservations should be placed well in advance for Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day. Spring and early fall are the most comfortable stretches. May carries wildflowers and greener foothills, while September and October deliver cooler nights and strong hardwood color along the ridges above the Ohio River. Winter camping is limited. Barkcamp keeps services reduced from November 1 to April 1, when the showerhouse and dump station remain available, water is located at the office building and shower house, and B Loop is closed. Grand Vue reduces to a limited number of sites and a single bathhouse from December 1 to April 1. Private parks in the region often close or run reduced sites from late fall through March, so travelers should confirm status before booking.

Terrain is hilly. Roads into ridge-top parks like Grand Vue climb from the river, and drivers of longer rigs should check turn radius and grade before arrival. At Grand Vue, each back-in site accommodates RVs up to 50 feet in length, with the exception of Site 23, which is 38 feet. River-level campgrounds are flatter but sit close to rail lines and industrial corridors in places. At Barkcamp, all RV campsites have a 10-foot-wide cement pad, and all sites are back-in with no pull-throughs. The campground features hot showers, tables, firerings, two wheelchair accessible sites, and a dump station. Cell coverage is generally good near the I-70 corridor and thins in the hollows. Expect mixed sun and shade and typical Appalachian wildlife, so food should be stored securely.
