Camping near Dunbar, West Virginia
Dunbar sits along the Kanawha River in Kanawha County, just west of Charleston, the state capital. The city had a population of about 7,500 at the 2020 census and lies directly on Interstate 64, making it a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Metro Valley and the southern coalfields.
Options close to town range from small riverside campgrounds to full-service RV parks. Little Coal River Campground and Cabin and Lazy K's Campground and Canoe Livery sit on tributary rivers south of the city, and Statts Mills RV Park offers a rural setting to the north. Families heading toward Huntington often stop at the Huntington / Fox Fire KOA Holiday, located along I-64 in the western Metro Valley between Huntington and Charleston.
For a state-park experience, Chief Logan State Park sits four miles north of Logan in the heart of West Virginia's southern coalfields, roughly an hour southwest of Dunbar, and is one of the most visited facilities in the West Virginia State Parks System.
Things to do around Dunbar
The Kanawha Valley pairs easy river access with wooded state land. Paddlers can float local tributaries from Lazy K's Campground and Canoe Livery, while hikers and mountain bikers head to Kanawha State Forest just south of Charleston for trail networks through Appalachian ridges.
Off-road riders use the region as a jumping-off point for the Hatfield-McCoy trail system. Chief Logan State Park sits within close proximity to the Hatfield-McCoy ATV trails for campers looking for a uniquely West Virginia adventure. The park also features a water slide at the swimming pool, an outdoor amphitheater, a Museum in the Park, hiking trails, multiple picnic shelters, and fishing.
Near the KOA in Milton, the Blenko Glass factory tour is a popular rainy-day stop, and downtown Charleston is a short drive for restaurants, the Capitol complex, and riverfront events.

Camping season in this part of West Virginia generally runs spring through fall. Many campgrounds in the region operate seasonally, with most state park facilities open from April through October or early November. Chief Logan's campground is open March through November.
Spring brings wildflowers and green-up along the ridges, but rivers can run high after heavy rain, so check gauges before paddling. Summer is peak season: warm, humid, and busy on weekends and holidays. It is advisable to book in advance during peak seasons, as these popular campgrounds can fill up quickly, especially on weekends and holidays. July is typically the wettest month, with afternoon thunderstorms common.
Fall delivers some of the region's best conditions for RV touring: cooler nights, lower humidity, and strong Appalachian color from mid-October into early November. Winter camping is limited; most private parks and state facilities scale back operations, and snow or ice can affect the surrounding mountain roads.
How to book campgrounds near Dunbar
West Virginia State Parks handle their own reservation system. Campsites may be reserved anytime online, by phone, or at the campground office. For Chief Logan State Park, reservations can be booked up to 12 months in advance, and reservations may be made for no less than two consecutive nights on weekends (Fri. and Sat.) or one night (Sun. through Thurs.).
Huntington / Fox Fire KOA Holiday takes bookings through the standard KOA website and phone line, with KOA Rewards discounts available at checkout. Smaller private parks such as Little Coal River Campground and Cabin, Lazy K's Campground and Canoe Livery, and Statts Mills RV Park typically take reservations by phone; call ahead, especially for holiday weekends and any stay tied to a Hatfield-McCoy trail trip.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of river-valley and hollow terrain. Roads follow creeks and ridgelines, so navigation apps sometimes route larger rigs onto narrow secondary roads; stick to interstates and US routes when possible and verify final approach directions with the campground.
Hookup levels vary. Chief Logan's campground offers 26 units, 14 of which have full water, sewage and electric hookups, and 12 with electric and water only. KOA Holiday properties like Huntington / Fox Fire typically provide pull-through RV sites, cabins, and family amenities. Smaller riverside parks lean rustic, with basic hookups and simple bathhouses.
Summer humidity and biting insects are real. Bring bug spray, expect afternoon storms, and plan for cell coverage to drop in the deeper hollows around Logan County.

Pro tip: Saint Albans Roadside Park has three free 30-amp overnight RV spots (2-night max) if you need a quick stop.
wvstateparks.com/park/kanawha-state-forest/When is the best time of year to take an RV trip from Dunbar?
Late April through October is the sweet spot for an RV road trip from Dunbar, with the absolute peak being mid-September to late October when the Appalachian foliage explodes across the Kanawha Valley. Summer highs sit in the mid-80s°F with humid afternoons, while spring brings rhododendron blooms and 60s-70s°F days. Winter rentals are available too if you want quiet trails and frosted overlooks, just confirm the rig has a furnace and heated tanks. Pro tip: time your trip around Bridge Day (third Saturday in October) at the New River Gorge Bridge, an hour east, for one of the most unique RV-friendly events in the country.
weather.gov/rlx/I've never driven an RV before. Is renting in Dunbar a good idea?
Yes, Dunbar is a beginner-friendly launchpad for first time renting an RV. The terrain around the Kanawha Valley is gentler than the high Alleghenies, and major routes like I-64, I-77, and US-60 are well-maintained with generous shoulders. Every RVezy host gives you a full orientation at pickup, walking through driving, leveling, water, power, and the dump process so you're never guessing. Pick a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer (under 25 feet) for easiest handling, and consider delivery so your first drive is in something familiar. Pro tip: do a slow practice loop through the flat, quiet streets of Shawnee Park before heading to the highway.
transportation.wv.gov/highways/Pages/default.aspxWhat if I break down during my Dunbar RV trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on US-60 or a dead battery at a campground in Kanawha State Forest is just a phone call away. The roadside team handles towing, tire changes, jump starts, lockouts, and fuel delivery across West Virginia. Your host is also a great first call for quirks specific to their rig, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number and your host's number in your phone before pulling out of the driveway, cell coverage can dip in the deeper Appalachian hollows.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Dunbar RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on most RVezy rentals from Dunbar, and West Virginia's central Appalachian location puts incredible multi-state road trips within easy reach. You can be in Virginia in under 90 minutes, Kentucky in about 2 hours, Ohio in around 90 minutes, and Pennsylvania in roughly 3 hours. Travel into Canada may be allowed with the right paperwork, so message the host directly from the listing to confirm cross-border permission and insurance details before booking. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Popular multi-state routes from Dunbar include the Blue Ridge Parkway loop and the Hocking Hills swing through southern Ohio.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for in West Virginia?
Plan around 8-10 MPG for a Class A, 10-14 MPG for a Class C motorhome rental Dunbar, 15-20 MPG for a campervan rental Dunbar (Class B), and your tow vehicle's normal MPG minus 3-5 for travel trailers. West Virginia gas prices typically sit slightly below the national average, and you'll find affordable fuel stops along I-64 in Dunbar, South Charleston, and Cross Lanes. The mountain grades on I-77 toward Beckley and I-79 toward Sutton will burn more fuel than valley driving along the Kanawha. Pro tip: fill up before heading into New River Gorge country, gas stations thin out fast once you leave the interstate corridor.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Dunbar?
For the best campgrounds near Dunbar, aim to book 3-6 months ahead for summer weekends and 6-12 months ahead for fall foliage season (mid-September to late October) and Bridge Day at New River Gorge. West Virginia State Parks like Kanawha State Forest, Babcock, and Pipestem all use the official wvstateparks.com reservation system, with a 12-month booking window. National Park Service sites and Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds use Recreation.gov, also typically 6 months out. Pro tip: weekday arrivals (Sunday-Wednesday) are often wide open even in peak season, so a midweek family RV trip Dunbar is a stress-free strategy.
wvstateparks.com/What are the driving conditions like around Dunbar?
Driving an RV around Dunbar is straightforward thanks to flat valley roads along the Kanawha River and well-graded interstates (I-64 and I-77 meet just east of town). Once you head into the mountains toward Fayetteville, Summersville, or Snowshoe, expect steeper grades, tighter curves, and the occasional 7-9% descent, so downshift and use engine braking. Watch for fog in river valleys at dawn, deer at dusk, and coal trucks on US-60 and Route 119. Winter travel is doable but check West Virginia 511 for snow advisories in the higher elevations. Pro tip: avoid the narrow, winding back roads into Kanawha State Forest with rigs over 30 feet, take the main forest entrance off Oakwood Road.
wv511.org/What amenities do campgrounds near Dunbar typically have?
Most campgrounds near Dunbar offer the essentials RVers want: 30-amp electric is standard, with 50-amp at newer or premium sites, plus water hookups and dump stations. Kanawha State Forest has a centralized dump station and potable water fills near its campground entrance. Babcock and Pipestem state parks offer full hookups at many sites, hot showers, laundry, and a camp store. Private parks like Rippling Waters and Rifrafters typically add Wi-Fi and propane refills. If you need to dump or refill between stops, the Flying J in nearby Nitro and Bulltown Camp on Burnsville Lake both have RV-friendly facilities. Pro tip: cell service is solid in Dunbar but spotty deep in the state forests, download maps before leaving.
wvstateparks.com/park/kanawha-state-forest/What's included inside a typical RV rental in Dunbar?
Your Dunbar RV rental is built for comfort straight out of the gate. Expect a real bed (queen or king in most Class C and Class A rigs, plus convertible dinettes and bunks), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with furnace and roof AC, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many rigs add a TV, Wi-Fi hotspot capability, outdoor speakers, and an onboard generator for off-grid Appalachian camping. Each listing spells out exactly what is included, and most hosts offer add-on bundles like linens, kitchen kits, and camp chairs. Pro tip: confirm generator hours if you are heading to a no-hookup site near New River Gorge.
rvezy.com/How do pickup, dropoff, and add-ons work for my Dunbar rental?
Pickup and dropoff for your RV rental in Dunbar are arranged directly with your host, and you have two easy paths: pick up at the host's location (often in Dunbar, Charleston, South Charleston, or Cross Lanes) or pay for RV delivery so the rig meets you at your campsite or home. Hosts set their own mileage policy (some offer unlimited miles), generator hours, and add-ons like bike racks, kayak racks, outdoor grills, linen packages, and pet kits, all visible on the listing. Pickups typically include a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough of every system. Pro tip: ask for an early-morning pickup so you can be set up at Kanawha State Forest before lunch.
rvezy.com/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment for your Dunbar RV rental is handled securely through the RVezy platform, so you never pay the host directly in cash. You will see the full breakdown (nightly rate, RVezy service fee, taxes, protection plan, and any add-ons) before you confirm. The security deposit is separate from the booking payment and is pre-authorized on your card, then released after your trip assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. To avoid deposit hiccups, do a video walkaround at pickup and dropoff, follow the host's fuel and mileage terms, and dump tanks before return if required. Pro tip: message the host any questions before booking, clear communication keeps everything smooth.
