Campgrounds and RV parks near Elkins, WV

The main draws are water, mountains, and the historic railway. Shavers Fork of the Cheat River holds trout and smallmouth bass and is popular for fishing, tubing, and kayaking. The Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad runs scenic excursion trains out of the Elkins depot, which is a reliable rainy-day option for families. Day trips reach Blackwater Falls State Park, Seneca Rocks, Dolly Sods Wilderness, and Spruce Knob, the highest point in West Virginia. Otter Creek Wilderness sits northeast of town and offers stream fishing and a network of backcountry trails. In winter, Canaan Valley and Timberline ski areas are within about an hour's drive, and several local campgrounds stay open year-round to serve winter travelers.

The practical camping season runs from mid-April through mid-October, with summer temperatures in Elkins typically running noticeably cooler than surrounding lowland areas. That mountain effect makes the region a popular hot-weather escape, and campgrounds along Shavers Fork and the Tygart Valley fill quickly on summer weekends. Book several weeks out for July and August, and further ahead for holiday weekends and the Mountain State Forest Festival in early October. Spring brings trout stocking, higher water for paddling, and reliable rain. Thunderstorms are common from late spring into summer, so expect wet ground and check road conditions on forest routes. Fall color usually peaks in the first two weeks of October, driving another surge in demand. Winter is cold and snowy at this elevation. Snow typically arrives in November and lingers into April, with January the snowiest month. Most Monongahela National Forest campgrounds close for the winter, though Revelle's River Resort and several private parks remain open year-round.

Roads in and out of Elkins are mostly two-lane mountain highways. Corridor H (US 48) improves east-west access, but routes like US 33 east toward Seneca Rocks and US 250 south to Huttonsville include steep grades and tight curves. Plan fuel stops before heading into the forest, and expect limited cell service once off the main corridors. Site mix varies widely. Riverfront private parks like Revelle's River Resort offer full hookups and bathhouses, while forest service sites near Otter Creek are primitive with vault toilets and no hookups. Black bears are active across the region, so food and trash need to be secured at all times. Quiet hours at West Virginia State Parks run from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., and pets must be leashed on both state and federal land.
