Campgrounds and RV parks near Poca, WV

The Kanawha and Coal rivers draw kayakers, tubers, and anglers throughout the warm season. Lazy K's Campground and Canoe Livery offers on-site livery service, and Little Coal River Campground and Cabin provides direct water access for paddlers. Bass, catfish, and bluegill are common catches in the surrounding waterways. Hikers and mountain bikers can reach Kanawha State Forest in under an hour, where about twenty-five miles of trails wind through hardwood coves and old-growth stands. Downtown Charleston adds the State Capitol, museums, and riverfront parks. Northwest of Poca, Point Pleasant anchors day trips to the Mothman Museum, the TNT Area wildlife trails, and the Silver Memorial Bridge.

The prime RV window in the Poca area runs from late April through October. Late spring brings wildflowers to the surrounding forests, moderate temperatures, and rising river levels ideal for paddling. Summer is warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common, but campgrounds operate at full capacity and rivers remain accessible. Fall is a strong shoulder season. September and October deliver crisp mornings, hardwood color across the Appalachian ridges, and lower rainfall than the summer peak. The third weekend of September brings the Mothman Festival to nearby Point Pleasant, so campgrounds within an hour's drive fill early. Kanawha State Forest's campground typically operates from April into December, weather permitting, and closes outside that window. Winter is the quietest stretch. Many private campgrounds close or reduce services, temperatures frequently drop below freezing, and snow is possible from November through March. RVers traveling in the cold months should confirm hookup availability and water-line status before arrival.

Terrain around Poca is rolling to hilly. Roads into private campgrounds are generally paved or well-maintained gravel, but some rural approaches include tight turns and narrow bridges. Larger Class A rigs and long fifth-wheels are better suited to KOA-style properties with pull-through sites; smaller trailers and Class B or C units handle river-adjacent parks more easily. Kanawha State Forest does not recommend RVs or trailer units longer than twenty-six feet. Hookups vary widely. Full water, electric, and sewer are standard at KOA and dedicated RV parks, while Kanawha State Forest offers electricity and water at twenty-five of its forty-six sites, with a shared dump station. Cell coverage is reliable in the Kanawha Valley but can drop in hollows and along back roads. Summer humidity, ticks, and biting insects are worth planning for.
