Camping near Reedsville, West Virginia
Reedsville is a small town in Preston County, in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains of north-central West Virginia. It sits at roughly 1,800 feet elevation, close to the Cheat River corridor and within easy driving distance of Morgantown, Coopers Rock State Forest, and the Maryland lakes region. The setting is rural and forested, with rolling ridges, hardwood cover, and cool mountain streams that shape both the terrain and the camping options.
RV travelers using Reedsville as a base can reach a mix of private RV parks, deeded lot resorts, and state park campgrounds within about an hour. Closer-in options include Camp Dawson Event Center, Sand Springs Campground, and Pine Hill Campground And Cabins. Larger destination campgrounds such as Big Bear Lake Camplands near Bruceton Mills and Tygart Lake State Park south of Grafton draw families for longer stays.
The area works well for RV renters who want mountain scenery, lake access, and short drives to trailheads without navigating dense tourist traffic.
Things to do around Reedsville
Water recreation is a main draw. Tygart Lake stretches roughly 10 miles and covers about 1,750 acres, with boating, swimming, and fishing for bass, walleye, crappie, and perch. Big Bear Lake Camplands adds an on-site swimming pool with a waterslide, tennis courts, miniature golf, and a private lake for guests staying at Beaver Creek Village.
On land, Coopers Rock State Forest sits a short drive north and offers cliffside overlooks of the Cheat River gorge, hiking trails, and rock climbing. Swallow Falls State Park across the Maryland line features Muddy Creek Falls, the tallest waterfall in Maryland at 53 feet, plus an old-growth hemlock forest and river swimming.
Morgantown is close enough for a day trip to WVU games, the rail-trail system, and restaurants when campers want a break from the woods.

The main camping season in this part of West Virginia runs spring through fall. Around Reedsville, most private campgrounds open in mid-April and close in October, and the Tygart Lake State Park campground is open spring through fall, weather permitting. Big Bear Lake Camplands typically operates from January through the start of October.
Late spring and early summer bring frequent rainfall, and July is often the wettest month at the nearest long-term station. Summer is warm and humid, with lake and river use at its peak. Fall delivers cool nights and hardwood color through October, and it is a strong shoulder season for RV travel.
Winter is cold and snowy at this elevation, with snowfall possible from October through May and January bringing the coldest averages. Campgrounds near Reedsville also fill quickly on WVU football weekends and major holidays, so those dates need early planning even outside peak summer.
How to book campsites near Reedsville
Reservation systems vary by operator. Tygart Lake State Park takes reservations online, by phone, or in person, with a 14-night maximum stay. Its 36 sites include ten with 50-amp electric and water hookups and 26 standard sites; full hookups are not offered, and a dump station sits near the beach area. Unreserved sites are first-come, first-served.
Private parks such as Big Bear Lake Camplands and Sand Springs Campground use their own online booking portals or phone reservations, and pre-season or post-season water may be shut off at individual sites to prevent freezing.
Book peak summer weekends, holiday weekends, and WVU football dates several months out. Midweek stays outside those windows are usually easier to secure.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into the campgrounds are mountainous, with grades, curves, and some narrow county routes. Rigs longer than 30 feet should confirm site length and access before booking, especially at older state park loops where the length limit is tight. Big Bear Lake Camplands lists a 100-foot maximum RV length and accepts big rigs and pull-throughs, while Tygart Lake sites are standard state park pads without full hookups.
Cell coverage is spotty in the ridges and hollows. Wi-Fi reaches most Tygart Lake sites, though the signal weakens from about site 28 to site 40. Bring layers even in summer, as nights at 1,800 feet cool off quickly.
Most campgrounds are pet-friendly on leash, and black bears are present in the region, so food storage matters.

wvstateparks.com/When is the best time to rent an RV in Reedsville, WV?
Late April through October is prime time for a Reedsville RV trip, with each season offering something special. Spring (April to May) brings wildflower blooms and 50 to 70°F days. Summer (June to August) is warm at 75 to 85°F, perfect for swimming at Big Bear Lake. Fall (mid-September through October) is legendary, the Allegheny hardwoods light up in reds and golds, with cool 45 to 65°F days ideal for hiking Coopers Rock. Winters are cold and snowy (often 20 to 35°F with significant snowfall), so many hosts pause rentals from December through March. Pro tip: aim for the first two weekends of October for peak foliage and book at least two months ahead.
weather.gov/rlx/I'm a first-time RV renter, will I be okay driving around Reedsville?
You'll do great, and Reedsville is actually a fantastic place to learn. The rural roads around Preston County are quiet, traffic is light compared to most US destinations, and your host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving tips, leveling, hookups, propane, generator, and the dump tanks. If you're nervous about mountain grades on Route 7 or I-68, ask about delivery so you don't have to drive at all. First time renting an RV? Stick to a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer for easier handling. Pro tip: practice a few right turns in the host's parking area before you leave, you'll feel confident within 15 minutes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RV rental in Reedsville includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you're on I-68 near Bruceton Mills or deep in the Monongahela National Forest. Roadside covers things like flat tires, battery jumps, lockouts, and towing to the nearest qualified service center. Your host is also typically just a text away for quick questions about the rig's systems. Pro tip: save the roadside number and your host's number to your phone before you leave the driveway, and snap a photo of the propane and water shut-offs during your walkthrough just in case.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Reedsville RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcomed on most Reedsville rentals, and many guests use it as a launchpad for an Appalachian loop. Easy crossings include Maryland (Deep Creek Lake is just 35 miles away), Pennsylvania (Ohiopyle State Park is under an hour), Virginia (Shenandoah National Park about 3 hours), and Ohio (under 2 hours west). Cross-border travel to Canada may be allowed with prior host approval and confirmation that insurance coverage extends to your destination, just message the host before booking. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: a Reedsville to Ohiopyle to Deep Creek Lake triangle makes an unforgettable 4-day first trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel economy and gas costs should I budget for?
Budgeting fuel for your Reedsville RV trip is straightforward once you know the numbers. Class B campervans get 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes average 10 to 14 MPG, Class A coaches typically run 7 to 10 MPG, and pulling a travel trailer usually drops your tow vehicle to 10 to 13 MPG. West Virginia gas prices typically run near the national average, with diesel a bit higher. The closest reliable fuel stops to Reedsville are in Kingwood, Bruceton Mills (right off I-68), and Masontown. Pro tip: fill up in Bruceton Mills before heading into the Cheat River Canyon, services thin out quickly once you turn onto smaller forest roads.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Reedsville?
For the best sites, plan ahead, but you have more flexibility here than in national-park destinations. West Virginia State Parks like Coopers Rock and Tygart Lake accept reservations up to 13 months in advance through the official WV State Parks reservation portal, and they fill quickly for July 4th, Labor Day, and peak fall foliage weekends in October. Private parks like Big Bear Lake Camplands take direct bookings online, typically 3 to 6 months out is plenty. Mid-week sites are often available just days ahead. Pro tip: if Coopers Rock is full, check Chestnut Ridge Park nearby, it's close, beautiful, and often overlooked by out-of-state travelers planning a West Virginia RV rental getaway.
wvstateparks.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Reedsville?
Driving around Reedsville is mostly easy and scenic, with light rural traffic on Route 7 and Route 92, and the nearby I-68 corridor offering smooth high-speed travel to Morgantown and Maryland. Expect rolling Appalachian terrain, some steep grades on backroads near the Cheat River Canyon, and the occasional tight switchback on routes into Coopers Rock. In winter, snow and ice are common from December through March, and roads can be slick. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk year-round. Pro tip: stick to numbered state routes (Route 7, Route 26, Route 92) and I-68 with a larger motorhome rental in Reedsville, GPS sometimes routes through narrow township roads not suited for big rigs.

Tygart Lake State Park has electric/water sites and a dump station near the marina. Most West Virginia State Park campgrounds include potable water fill stations and centralized dump points, even at no-hookup loops. You'll pay the trip total at checkout using a major credit card, with no cash, e-transfers, or off-platform payments ever required or recommended. A refundable security deposit is placed on your card before pickup, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig, and released within a few days after a smooth return. To avoid issues, do the pre-trip walkthrough carefully, snap timestamped photos of the exterior and interior, and document the fuel and propane levels. Pro tip: keep all conversations and payments inside the RVezy app, it's how the protection plan and support team can back you up if anything comes up.

A family RV trip in Reedsville is one of the best-kept secrets in the Mid-Atlantic. Kids love the swimming lake and activities at Big Bear Lake Camplands, the easy waterfall hikes at Cathedral State Park (with its old-growth hemlocks), and the Coopers Rock overlook trail, short, stroller-friendly, and jaw-dropping. Rainy day? Drive about 25 minutes to Morgantown for family activities and a meal on High Street. Most RVs rented in the area sleep 4 to 8, with bunkhouse layouts perfect for kids. Pro tip: book a travel trailer with an outdoor kitchen and pair it with a Coopers Rock State Forest site, your family will be eating dinner with a canyon view by night one.
