Campgrounds and RV parks near Sissonville, WV

Water is the main draw. Lazy K's Campground and Canoe Livery runs canoe and kayak trips on the Pocatalico River, and the Little Coal, Elk, and Kanawha rivers all offer flat-water paddling and bass fishing within a short drive. Charles Fork Lake near Spencer is a smaller, quieter option known for walleye, musky, and bass fishing, with electric-motor-only boating and shoreline trails. Kanawha State Forest, roughly a half hour south of Sissonville, has more than 60 miles of hiking and mountain-bike trails, a seasonal swimming pool, and a free public shooting range. Families often pair a Sissonville stay with a day at Camden Park, a small amusement park in Huntington with classic rides and a wooden roller coaster. For a bigger outing, New River Gorge National Park and Preserve is about ninety minutes east and delivers whitewater rafting, hiking, and the New River Gorge Bridge overlook.

The main camping window in West Virginia runs spring through fall, though several state parks offer year-round camping and many private RV parks stay open into the shoulder months. Around Sissonville, most private campgrounds operate on a similar spring-to-fall schedule, with the busiest weekends running from Memorial Day through Labor Day and again during October leaf-peeping. Kanawha State Forest's campground typically opens in mid-April and closes at the end of October, weather permitting. Spring brings the highest river levels, which is ideal for rafting and paddling but can also mean muddy sites and occasional flood closures along the Pocatalico and Coal river bottoms. Summer is warm and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms; July is typically the wettest month in the Charleston area, averaging over five inches of rain. Fall is the most reliable stretch for RV travel: cooler nights, lower humidity, and vivid color across the Appalachian ridges. Winter is short but genuinely cold, with January snowfall averaging around five and a half inches at Charleston and most riverside private parks closed or on reduced services.

Roads into private campgrounds near Sissonville are often narrow, hilly, and tree-lined; larger Class A rigs should call ahead to confirm access, especially at riverside parks like Lazy K's Campground and Canoe Livery and Little Coal River Campground and Cabin. Sites at smaller parks may be gravel or grass, with a mix of full hookups and water-electric only. At Kanawha State Forest, RVs longer than 26 feet are not recommended due to the narrow access road. Cell service is generally reliable near I-77 and Charleston but can drop out in the hollows. Bring bug spray, especially for spring and summer evenings near the rivers. West Virginia state park rules apply at nearby WVDNR sites: quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., pets must be leashed, only dogs and cats are allowed, and no more than two motor vehicles are permitted per campsite.
