Campgrounds near South Charleston
South Charleston sits along the Kanawha River in the Kanawha Valley of West Virginia, immediately west of Charleston and within easy reach of Interstates 64, 77, and 79. The area works well as an RV base because these interstates converge in the valley with wide lanes and manageable grades, making arrivals from most directions workable in a larger rig.
Campground options range from small private parks close to town to lakeside and river-adjacent sites in the surrounding hills. Lazy K's Campground and Canoe Livery and Little Coal River Campground and Cabin sit along area waterways, Statts Mills RV Park lies to the north in Roane County, and Huntington / Fox Fire KOA Holiday offers a fuller-service KOA experience west toward Huntington. For a public-lands option, Charles Fork Lake features camping with electric and non-electric sites, vault toilets, and a picnic pavilion.
Beyond these, Kanawha State Forest just south of Charleston offers a 46-site campground with 25 electric and water sites, two bathhouses, a coin laundry, and a dump station, giving families a public campground close to South Charleston itself.
Things to do near South Charleston
Outdoor recreation dominates trip planning here. Kanawha State Forest sits minutes from South Charleston with more than 25 miles of hiking and biking trails, fishing at Ellison Pond, and a playground. Charles Fork Lake, a 70-acre impoundment south of Spencer on WV Route 36, anchors 21 miles of trails and is well known for walleye, musky, and bass fishing, with paddlers often spotting great blue herons or the occasional bald eagle.
Day trips open up quickly from the valley. New River Gorge National Park lies about an hour east, Summersville Lake is roughly an hour north, and the Hatfield-McCoy Trails system reaches down into southern West Virginia. Families can pair whitewater rafting on the New or Gauley with easier stops such as riverside paddling from Lazy K's Campground and Canoe Livery closer to home.

The Kanawha Valley has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are warm and humid, winters are short but cold, and the sky is partly cloudy year round, which shapes both what is open and how comfortable an RV stay will be.
Late spring through early fall is the core RV season. May typically brings the most rainy days, June through August delivers reliable warmth for swimming and paddling, and October is prized for foliage along the ridges. Kanawha State Forest's campground runs from April through the first Saturday in December, weather permitting, so shoulder-season travelers should confirm dates before booking.
Winter trips are viable but limited. Snow, ice, and cold snaps can hit the valley, and higher elevations east of Charleston see heavier accumulation. Most public and private campgrounds in the area close or reduce services between late fall and spring, though the Kanawha State Forest day-use area stays accessible. Book early for summer weekends and for October foliage dates, when demand across West Virginia peaks.
How to book campgrounds near South Charleston
Reservation systems vary by ownership. Kanawha State Forest takes reservations online, by phone, or at the campground office through West Virginia State Parks, with a two-night minimum on Friday and Saturday and a one-night minimum Sunday through Thursday. Summer weekends and October foliage weekends fill quickly, so book well ahead.
Private parks are booked directly. Huntington / Fox Fire KOA Holiday uses the KOA reservation system, while Lazy K's Campground and Canoe Livery, Little Coal River Campground and Cabin, and Statts Mills RV Park take bookings by phone or through their own websites. Confirm site length and hookup type when calling, since many valley parks have a mix of pull-through and back-in sites.
Charles Fork Lake is operated by the City of Spencer. Contact the city's Parks and Recreation office to confirm current campground procedures and availability before arriving.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of valley driving and mountain roads. Interstates through South Charleston are RV-friendly, but side routes toward campgrounds and trailheads narrow quickly. Once heading east toward New River Gorge or south toward the coalfields, drivers should plan on curvy two-lane roads, steeper grades, and the occasional coal truck, so travel times run longer than a map suggests.
Site quality ranges widely. Private parks typically offer full or partial hookups, laundry, and Wi-Fi, while public campgrounds like Kanawha State Forest lean toward electric-and-water sites served by bathhouses and a dump station. Cell coverage is reliable in the valley but thins out in the hollows and along ridgelines, and reviewers note limited signal at Kanawha State Forest itself.
Terrain and weather matter for setup. Elevations rise sharply from the river valley into the surrounding hills, and summer days regularly reach the mid-80s with high humidity and afternoon thunderstorms. Pack for humidity, bring leveling blocks, and plan setup around the forecast.

wvstateparks.com/park/kanawha-state-forest/Can the RV be delivered to me in South Charleston?
Yes, and it's one of the easiest ways to start your trip: many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery South Charleston straight to your campsite, driveway, or even Yeager Airport (CRW) if you're flying in. Use the Delivery filter when you search, and you'll see hosts who'll drop the rig at places like Rippling Waters Campground, Kanawha State Forest, or a private property in the Kanawha Valley. The host parks it, levels it, connects hookups, and walks you through everything from the awning to the propane stove. For first-timers nervous about navigating I-64 or the hills around Charleston in a 30-foot motorhome, delivery is a stress-free win. Most hosts charge a flat fee or per-mile rate after a free radius.
wvtourism.com/company/yeager-airport/How does mileage work, and how far can I realistically drive from South Charleston?
You've got plenty of room to roam: most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night with their South Charleston RV trip rentals, and several offer unlimited mileage packages, which is great for longer Appalachian road trips. From South Charleston you can easily reach New River Gorge National Park (about 60 miles east on US-19), Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio (about 180 miles northwest), the Greenbrier resort area (about 110 miles east via I-64), Pittsburgh (about 230 miles north), and the Smoky Mountains (about 350 miles south). If you're planning big mileage, filter listings for RV rental with unlimited mileage or message the host to negotiate a mileage add-on package upfront so there are no surprises.

Book Kanawha State Forest 4 to 6 weeks ahead in summer through the official WV State Parks reservation system.
wvstateparks.com/park/kanawha-state-forest/When is the best time of year to rent an RV in South Charleston, WV?
You've got a long season here: late April through late October is prime time for RV camping South Charleston, with peak weather from June through August when daytime highs run 80 to 86°F and the Kanawha Valley is lush and green. The smart-money pick, though, is mid-September to late October when crowds thin, humidity drops, and the Appalachian foliage explodes into red, orange, and gold, especially around New River Gorge. Spring (April to May) is the wettest stretch with about 4 inches of rain in May, so pack a rain jacket. Insider tip: schedule your trip for the third Saturday in October to catch Bridge Day at the New River Gorge Bridge, one of the most unique events in America.
weather.gov/rlx/climateI've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one around South Charleston?
You're going to do great, and you won't be left to figure it out alone. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, hookups, the generator, slide-outs, and the dump process, so first time renting an RV in South Charleston feels manageable from minute one. For your first miles, stick to flatter routes like Corridor G (US-119) or I-64 west toward Huntington before tackling the curvy mountain roads near New River Gorge. Class B campervans and Class C motorhomes are the easiest to drive and park, especially in downtown Charleston where some streets are narrow. If you'd rather skip city driving entirely, choose a host who delivers and you can start your trip from the campground.
transportation.wv.gov/highways/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if something breaks down during my RV trip?
You are covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are parked at Kanawha State Forest or on US-19 heading to New River Gorge. The roadside team handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and mechanical issues. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app, since hosts know their RVs best and can help troubleshoot small issues like a tripped breaker or finicky water pump. West Virginia's major highways (I-64, I-77, US-19) generally have reliable cell coverage, which makes getting help quick. Save the RVezy support number to your phone before you head out.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trips to take from South Charleston?
You're sitting on one of the East Coast's best RV launchpads. Top RV road trips from South Charleston include: New River Gorge National Park (60 miles east, about 1 hour) for whitewater rafting and the famous 876-foot bridge; the Midland Trail (US-60) scenic byway east through Hawks Nest State Park and Babcock State Park (75 miles); Greenbrier and Lewisburg (110 miles east on I-64) for hot springs and small-town charm; Hocking Hills, Ohio (180 miles northwest) for waterfalls and caves; and Great Smoky Mountains National Park (350 miles south, about 6 hours). Travel into Mexico isn't allowed on RVezy rentals, but cross-country U.S. routes are wide open. Confirm any out-of-state travel with your host before booking.
wvtourism.com/things-to-do/scenic-drives/midland-trail/What should I budget for fuel on a South Charleston RV trip?
Good news for your wallet: West Virginia consistently has gas prices near or below the national average, which makes fueling up an RV here cheaper than in most coastal states. Expect a Class C motorhome to get roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon and a travel trailer setup to get 10 to 13 mpg depending on your tow vehicle. For a 4-day, 400-mile loop from South Charleston to New River Gorge and back, budget around $150 to $200 for fuel. Top off at the truck-friendly Pilot and Loves stops along I-64 and I-77 (lower prices and easy pull-through access) and avoid filling up in downtown Charleston where prices skew higher. Free overnight RV parking at Cabela's near Charleston is a fuel-saving bonus.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near South Charleston?
Plan ahead to lock in the best sites. For West Virginia State Parks like Kanawha State Forest and Babcock State Park, reservations can be made up to a year in advance through the official WV State Parks reservation portal, and summer weekends often book 2 to 3 months out. For private parks like Rippling Waters and the Huntington/Fox Fire KOA, 4 to 6 weeks of lead time is usually plenty outside of holidays. New River Gorge National Park campgrounds are primitive and first-come, first-served year-round, so arrive early on Thursday to snag a Grandview Sandbar or Army Camp site before the Friday rush, and keep a backup like Babcock booked just in case.
wvstateparks.com/reservations/What are driving conditions like around South Charleston?
You'll find the major routes straightforward and the scenic ones rewarding. Interstate 64, Interstate 77, and Corridor G (US-119) are wide, well-maintained, and easy to handle in any motorhome rental South Charleston. The curves get tighter as you head east toward New River Gorge on US-19 and the Midland Trail (US-60), so take it slow on downhill grades and use lower gears. Watch for fog in river valleys during early mornings, summer thunderstorms that can roll in fast, and occasional coal trucks on rural two-lanes. Winter drivers should check 511wv.gov for ice and snow advisories before crossing the mountains. Avoid downtown Charleston's low railroad underpasses by sticking to the interstate loop, which keeps tall rigs clear.
511.wv.gov/What amenities do campgrounds near South Charleston offer, and where can I dump and refill water?
Expect a great mix: most established RV parks near South Charleston offer 30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer hookups, hot showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Kanawha State Forest has electric hookups, drinking water spigots, showers, and a dump station on-site. Huntington/Fox Fire KOA delivers full hookups, cable, swimming, and bike rentals. Rippling Waters in Cross Lanes also has full hookups. For dump stations on the road, the Flying J truck stops along I-64 and I-77 offer public dumps for a small fee, and most state park campgrounds will let day-use guests dump for $5 to $10. Always top off freshwater before heading into New River Gorge, where in-park campgrounds have no potable water at all.
wvstateparks.com/park/kanawha-state-forest/What features and amenities will the RV itself have?
You'll be impressed: RVs on RVezy in South Charleston come fully equipped for a comfortable Appalachian road trip. Expect a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink; a bathroom with shower and toilet; comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on size; air conditioning and heat (essential for both 86°F July afternoons and chilly October mountain nights); and seatbelts for safe family travel. Most rigs include a TV, and many offer Wi-Fi hotspots, generators, outdoor speakers, and solar panels. Bedding and kitchen kits are often included or available as add-ons. Check each listing's amenity list and message the host with any must-haves like a backup camera or pet-friendly bedding. You're getting a hotel room on wheels, ready for adventure.
nps.gov/neri/planyourvisit/camping.htmWhat popular add-ons can I get with my South Charleston RV rental?
Hosts love to make your trip easier with smart add-ons. Common extras for a campervan rental South Charleston or motorhome rental South Charleston include linens and towel kits ($25 to $50), kitchen packages, camp chairs and outdoor tables, portable grills, generators (often included), bike racks, and pet kits with bowls and bedding. Many hosts also offer paid delivery (often $2 to $4 per mile after a free radius), late returns, and dump-and-refill service so you don't have to handle waste tanks yourself. Pickup and dropoff are usually at the host's home base in the Kanawha Valley, with flexible windows. Review the add-ons section on each listing, then message the host to bundle what you want before booking.
wvtourism.com/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card at the time of booking, with no cash changing hands between you and the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately during your South Charleston RV trip and released back to your card after the host confirms the RV was returned in good shape, typically within a few days of dropoff. To avoid any hiccups, take date-stamped photos of the RV at pickup and dropoff (inside and out), keep the holding tanks dumped and the fuel topped off as agreed, and follow the mileage and generator-hour limits in your listing. Message your host with any concerns during the trip and document everything in the RVezy app.
