Campgrounds near Terra Alta
Terra Alta sits on the Allegheny Plateau in Preston County, West Virginia, at an elevation of roughly 2,582 feet, making it one of the highest incorporated communities in the state. The town is a practical base for RV travelers exploring the tri-state corner where West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania meet, with quick access to I-68 and a mix of private resorts, state parks, and small family-run campgrounds within a short drive.
Big Bear Lake Camplands, established in 1972, is the largest nearby operation, a privately owned resort in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia. The property has 1,000 deeded lots plus 25 rental camping sites, with overnight bookings handled through Beaver Creek Village. Pine Hill Campground And Cabins near Hazelton offers a quieter alternative on a 44-acre forested property with picnic tables and fire rings for each site, a bathhouse, cabins, secluded tent sites, and a covered pavilion.
Across the state line, Swallow Falls State Park in Garrett County, Maryland provides public-land camping close to the waterfalls. Camp Dawson Event Center in Kingwood and Double G RV Park round out the options for travelers who prefer standard hookup sites.
Things to do near Terra Alta
Waterfalls are the headline attraction. Swallow Falls State Park stretches 257 acres and contains Tolliver Falls and Muddy Creek Falls, Maryland's highest at 53 feet, with a short loop trail that works well for families. The park also has several miles of forest trails for hiking and mountain biking, catch-and-release trout fishing, and camper cabins.
Big Bear Lake Camplands adds resort-style activity for guests staying on property, including Bearfoot Springs water park with slides and a lazy river, plus mini-golf, tennis, basketball and volleyball courts, a lake for swimming and fishing, and an extensive mountain bike trail network.
Deep Creek Lake, Cheat Lake, and Coopers Rock State Forest are all within easy driving distance for paddling, fishing, and overlook hikes.

The camping calendar here is short and mountain-driven. Most private campsites near Terra Alta operate from spring through fall, with higher elevation locations running noticeably cooler than surrounding lowlands. Pine Hill Campground runs a typical mountain season from April 1 to November 1.
Summer is peak season for families, with the Bearfoot Springs water park and lake swimming at Big Bear driving heavy weekend demand. At Swallow Falls, peak season runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, when an early arrival is recommended to secure parking and picnic spots, and advance day-use reservations are now required every day during that stretch under the Maryland Park Service system.
Fall brings crisp air and hardwood color across the plateau, with cooler nights ideal for campfires. Winters are severe: Terra Alta sits at over 2,500 feet and averages roughly 130 inches of snow per year, and most private campgrounds close through the cold months.
How to book campgrounds near Terra Alta
Swallow Falls State Park uses the Maryland State Parks reservation system. Reservations can be made by calling 1-888-432-2267 or online at parkreservations.maryland.gov, must be made at least 1 day ahead of arrival, and can be booked up to 365 days in advance. A minimum two-night stay applies on weekends and three nights over holiday weekends, so plan trip dates accordingly.
Private parks are booked directly. Big Bear Lake Camplands accepts overnight guests at Beaver Creek Village through its website and Campspot, and Pine Hill Campground takes reservations by phone. Double G RV Park and Camp Dawson Event Center sites should also be contacted directly to confirm availability, hookup type, and rig-length limits before arrival.
Sites can book up fast, especially for holiday weekends; aim to book at least three months in advance, or earlier for cabins and full-hookup sites.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in this area vary widely by property. Swallow Falls has 65 wooded campsites with a fire ring, picnic table, and lantern post on a stabilized pad, modern bathhouses with hot and cold water, three full-hookup sites with electric, water and sewer, and three sites with water and electric only. Most sites are non-hookup, so plan power and water use accordingly.
Big Bear Lake's Beaver Creek Village loop includes rustic tent sites and RV sites with full electric, water, and sewer hookups. Pine Hill has more than 40 full or partial hookup campsites that are big-rig friendly, with ten pull-through spots, plus a dump station and hot showers.
Expect wooded, mountain terrain, cool nights even in July, and active wildlife. Backcountry camping in the region calls for bear-resistant food storage due to active black bear populations.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Terra Alta, WV
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Terra Alta, WV?
Great news: RV rental in Terra Alta is one of the more affordable ways to enjoy the Allegheny Highlands. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $140 per night, while Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275 per night, depending on season and size. Weekday bookings outside of summer holidays are the sweet spot if you're looking for a cheap RV rental in Terra Alta. Pro tip: book a trailer and ask the host about delivery to nearby Alpine Lake Resort or Big Bear Lake Campground, which often costs less than driving a larger motorhome yourself and frees you up to hike Cathedral State Park the whole weekend.
wvtourism.com/company/terra-alta-convention-and-visitors-bureau/What license do I need to rent an RV in Terra Alta?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Terra Alta, WV. West Virginia does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for any of the recreational vehicles available on RVezy, including Class A motorhomes, fifth wheels, and travel trailers. Approved renters on RVezy are generally 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the platform during checkout, so there's no extra paperwork to chase down. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license. Most first-time renters are surprised how quick the process is.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs rental protection included when I book an RV in Terra Alta?
Yes, every RV rental in Terra Alta booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the Mountaineer Country backroads with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the RV and gives you a financial safety net while you're exploring Preston County. During checkout, you choose your coverage tier based on how much peace of mind you want; the choice is yours, not the host's. It isn't traditional auto insurance, but it's purpose-built for peer-to-peer RV rentals. If a tire goes flat near Aurora or you need a tow off Route 7, one call gets help rolling your way.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Terra Alta RV trip?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy, and there's a money-back grace period after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Whether you're planning around a Preston County Buckwheat Festival weekend or a summer family RV trip in Terra Alta, you have a clear path if plans change. The exact refund amount depends on how far out you cancel, and host cancellations result in a full refund or credit to you. You'll see the cancellation policy applied to your booking on the RVezy website and in your confirmation email. Pro tip: book early to lock in summer pricing, knowing the grace period has your back.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Terra Alta?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Terra Alta is easy to find. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see listings where dogs (and sometimes cats) are welcome, often with no extra fee. Terra Alta is a fantastic dog destination: leashed pups are welcome on the trails at Cathedral State Park, the shoreline area at Big Bear Lake, and most loop roads at Coopers Rock State Forest just west of town. Pro tip: message the host before booking to share your pet's size and breed; many Preston County hosts are dog owners themselves and may leave a welcome treat. Bring a tie-out and a towel for muddy paws after creek hikes.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Terra+Alta%2C+WVCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Terra Alta?
Yes, RV delivery in Terra Alta is one of the smartest ways to start your trip, especially if it's your first time. Many local hosts will deliver your motorhome or travel trailer directly to Alpine Lake Resort, Big Bear Lake Campground, or a private cabin driveway near Terra Alta. They'll level it, hook up water and power, prime the propane, and walk you through every switch and tank before handing over the keys. Filter for Delivery on RVezy to see which hosts offer it and their typical mileage radius. Pro tip: delivery is a game-changer if you're flying into Pittsburgh International Airport (about 90 miles north) and want to skip towing through mountain roads.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Terra+Alta%2C+WVHow far can I drive on an RV rental from Terra Alta?
You can go a long way, and several hosts even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is the best deal if you're planning a bigger loop. Most listings include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles often around $0.35 to $0.50 each. From Terra Alta, that's plenty for popular routes: Blackwater Falls State Park is about 45 miles south, Seneca Rocks roughly 75 miles, Deep Creek Lake in Maryland just 20 miles east, and Pittsburgh around 90 miles north. Pro tip: if you're dreaming of a Shenandoah or New River Gorge RV road trip from Terra Alta, filter for unlimited mileage upfront; you'll save serious money over a week-long itinerary.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Terra+Alta%2C+WVWhere are the best campgrounds near Terra Alta for an RV trip?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Terra Alta for RV camping include Alpine Lake Resort just outside town (full hookups, lakefront sites, and an on-site restaurant), Big Bear Lake Campground in nearby Bruceton Mills (huge wooded sites and mountain biking trails), Sand Spring Campground (quiet, family-run, great for trailers), and Coopers Rock State Forest's McCollum Campground about 20 miles west (overlook views into the Cheat River Gorge). For Maryland-side options, Deep Creek Lake State Park is a 25-minute drive. Pro tip: weekends from Memorial Day through October book up fast, so reserve at least 4 to 6 weeks ahead, and use the West Virginia State Parks reservation system for any state park sites.
wvstateparks.com/When is the best time of year for an RV trip in Terra Alta?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for RV camping in Terra Alta, with comfortable daytime highs and crisp mountain nights perfect for campfires. Sitting at roughly 2,500 feet of elevation, Terra Alta runs noticeably cooler than lowland West Virginia, so summer rarely feels oppressive. September and early October are arguably the best weeks of all: peak fall color across the Alleghenies, fewer bugs, and the Preston County Buckwheat Festival typically held in late September. Winter is snowy and cold, with Terra Alta historically receiving some of the heaviest snowfall in the state, but a few hosts offer four-season rigs for snowmobilers and skiers heading to Canaan Valley. Book leaf-peeping weekends by mid-August.
weather.gov/rlx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in the WV mountains?
You've got this, even if it's your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host in Terra Alta provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, propane, the generator, and the dump process, and they're a text away during your trip. For mountain confidence, start with a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer rather than a 35-foot Class A; they handle Route 7 and US-50 curves much better. Drive in daylight your first day, use lower gears on grades like Cheat Mountain, and take it slow on switchbacks. Pro tip: if any road feels tight, RVezy's 24/7 roadside team is one call away, and delivery is always an option for total peace of mind.
fmcsa.dot.gov/safety/driver-safety/cmv-driving-tips-following-too-closelyWhat happens if something goes wrong with my RV near Terra Alta?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so whether you've got a flat on US-50, a dead battery at Alpine Lake Resort, or a propane issue at a remote site near Aurora, one call gets help dispatched. Your host is also typically just a text away and knows the local quirks, like which gas stations off Route 7 have RV-friendly pumps. For non-emergency questions, RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone before you leave the driveway, and screenshot your host's contact info in case cell signal drops in the hollows.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trips from Terra Alta?
Terra Alta is a hidden gem launchpad for an RV road trip. Within a few hours, you can reach Blackwater Falls State Park (about 45 miles south), Seneca Rocks and Spruce Knob (about 75 miles), New River Gorge National Park (roughly 3.5 hours south), Deep Creek Lake in Maryland (just 20 miles), and Pittsburgh (about 90 miles north). Cross-state travel within the U.S. is fully allowed on RVezy rentals, and a Maryland or Pennsylvania loop is incredibly popular. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy bookings. Pro tip: a 5-day loop through Blackwater Falls, Canaan Valley, Seneca Rocks, and back via Smoke Hole Caverns is the quintessential Allegheny Highlands itinerary.
nps.gov/neri/index.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Terra Alta RV trip?
Fuel is very manageable if you plan ahead. Expect about 8 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class C motorhome, 12 to 18 mpg for a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer, and 18 to 22 mpg for a Class B campervan rental in Terra Alta. Gas in Preston County typically runs a few cents below the national average, with stations in Kingwood and Bruceton Mills being your most reliable fill-ups for larger rigs. For a 4-day loop covering 300 miles in a Class C, budget roughly $120 to $160 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in West Virginia rather than Maryland just over the line; WV fuel taxes often run lower, saving you a few bucks per tank.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Terra Alta?
For peak summer weekends and fall color (mid-September to mid-October), reserve campgrounds 2 to 3 months in advance, especially at popular spots like Big Bear Lake Campground and Alpine Lake Resort. West Virginia State Parks like Coopers Rock can be booked through the official WV State Parks reservation system up to 13 months ahead, and they fill quickly for holiday weekends. Weekdays and shoulder season (late April to mid-May, late October) often have same-week availability. Pro tip: if you strike out at a state park, check the Monongahela National Forest's first-come-first-served sites near Bruceton Mills, or message your RVezy host; many know off-the-radar private campgrounds and can suggest open dates.
wvstateparks.com/reservations/What are the roads like for driving an RV around Terra Alta?
Terra Alta sits on the Allegheny Plateau at about 2,500 feet, so expect scenic, winding two-lane roads rather than highways once you leave Interstate 68. Route 7 and US-50 are well-maintained and RV-friendly, with manageable grades. The biggest local consideration is weather: fog rolls in fast on summer mornings, and snow or ice is common from December through March, so winter renters should choose a four-season rig and watch forecasts. Avoid narrow forest roads off the main routes unless your host okays them. Pro tip: I-68 between Morgantown and Cumberland is your easiest east-west route, with a few steep grades like Big Savage Mountain; just downshift, take it slow, and enjoy the overlooks.
transportation.wv.gov/highways/Pages/default.aspxWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Terra Alta?
Most established campgrounds near Terra Alta offer full or partial hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, and sewer at premium sites), hot showers, and dump stations. Alpine Lake Resort and Big Bear Lake Campground both have full hookups, laundry, and Wi-Fi at the office. State park campgrounds like Coopers Rock typically offer electric and water but no sewer at the site, with a central dump station on the way out. Potable water fill-ups are easy at any of these. Pro tip: if you're boondocking on Monongahela National Forest land, top off your fresh tank at Alpine Lake or any Sheetz off I-68 before heading in, and plan to use the dump station at Big Bear Lake on your way back to town.
fs.usda.gov/mnfWhat's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Terra Alta?
You'll be impressed. A typical motorhome rental in Terra Alta comes fully equipped: a queen or king bed plus convertible dinette and sofa beds (sleeping 4 to 8), a kitchen with fridge, freezer, three-burner stove, microwave, and sink, a full bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, propane furnace, and seatbelted seats for travel. Most rigs include a flat-screen TV, and many offer a generator or solar for off-grid camping. Wi-Fi varies; cell signal in Preston County is solid on Verizon and AT&T but spotty in deep hollows, so a host with a Wi-Fi hotspot add-on is gold. Pro tip: confirm bedding, towels, and kitchen kit on the listing or message the host; many Terra Alta hosts include them free.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about for a Terra Alta rental?
Hosts in Terra Alta offer some genuinely useful add-ons: delivery and setup (often $2 to $4 per mile from their location), generator use ($3 to $5 per hour beyond included hours), bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75 per trip), outdoor gear like camp chairs and grills, and bike or kayak racks for Big Bear Lake. Pickup is typically self-drive from the host's driveway, but Instant Book listings and Delivery listings streamline things further; just use those filters on RVezy. Mileage policies vary by host, with many offering 100 to 150 free miles per night and some offering unlimited. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a linen pack and you can literally show up at Alpine Lake Resort with just a duffel.
wvtourism.com/How does payment and the security deposit work on an RVezy booking?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy's platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which keeps everything trackable and protected. A refundable security deposit (the amount is set per listing and shown before you book) is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after the host confirms the rig came back in good shape, typically within a few days. To avoid any deposit hiccups, do a thorough walkaround with the host at both pickup and return, take date-stamped photos, and dump the tanks and refill fuel before drop-off as agreed. Pro tip: keep all communication inside the RVezy app so you have a clear record if any question comes up later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Terra Alta for a winter or snow trip?
Yes, and it's an underrated adventure. A handful of Terra Alta hosts offer four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and reliable propane furnaces, perfect for snowmobiling around Terra Alta (one of the snowiest towns in West Virginia) or skiing at Canaan Valley and Timberline, about an hour south. Stay at a campground with shore power like Alpine Lake Resort so you can run electric heaters without draining propane. Use the Delivery filter and message hosts directly about winter availability. Pro tip: ask your host to demonstrate antifreeze procedures for the water system before you leave, and keep the fresh tank low (or empty and use jugs) to avoid freeze-ups on the coldest nights.
