Campgrounds and RV parks near West Hamlin, WV

Beech Fork State Park anchors the local recreation scene with a lake, miles of shoreline, hiking trails, a swim pool, and a marina that rents kayaks, canoes, paddleboats, and jon boats during the warmer months. Anglers target bass, catfish, and panfish along the lake, and the surrounding wildlife management area draws birders and families looking to spot deer, foxes, and songbirds. ATV riders head southeast to the Hatfield-McCoy Trails, a system spanning hundreds of miles that is legally accessible from certain West Virginia highways. Little Coal River Campground and Cabin sits near a Hatfield-McCoy trailhead. Chief Logan State Park adds mountain biking, an outdoor pool with a waterslide, a wildlife exhibit, and the Liz Spurlock Amphitheater that hosts summer performances.

The southern West Virginia camping calendar is driven by state-park seasons. At Beech Fork, Old Orchard Campground is open year-round with full hookups, while Four Coves, Moxley Branch, and Lake View operate seasonally, with Moxley Branch generally running mid-April through mid-October. Chief Logan's campground typically runs March through November, with water shut off and winterized once temperatures drop. Spring brings wildflowers, high river flows, and good conditions for paddling on the Guyandotte and nearby streams. Summer is the peak booking window: lakefront sites at Beech Fork and the Chief Logan loops fill early on weekends and holidays, and the pool and marina rentals at Beech Fork run through the warm months. Fall delivers strong Appalachian foliage color through October, and cooler nights thin out crowds. Winter camping is possible at year-round loops like Old Orchard, but expect closed bathhouses at seasonal parks and occasional snow along Route 10 and the ridge roads into Beech Fork.

Beech Fork offers 275 campsites across four camping areas, with roughly 80 to 99 lakefront sites, paved parking pads, grills, picnic tables, and fully equipped bathhouses. Old Orchard has 49 full-hookup sites with 20, 30, and 50-amp service, plus Wi-Fi, while Moxley Branch, Four Coves, and Lake View offer 20 and 30-amp electric with some water hookups. Approach roads into some Beech Fork loops are narrow and winding, so larger rigs should study the park map before arrival. Chief Logan's campground has 26 sites, with 14 full-hookup sites and 12 with electric and water only, plus a central bathhouse with hot showers. Cell coverage in the hollows can be spotty, so download maps before leaving Huntington.
