Camping near Bancroft, Wisconsin
Bancroft is an unincorporated community in Portage County, Wisconsin, sitting just east of Interstate 39 in the sandy plains of central Wisconsin. The area is flat farm and pine country broken by a few low bluffs, with the Waupaca Chain O' Lakes, the Central Sands trout streams, and the Wisconsin River all within a short drive.
RV travelers have a solid mix of private campgrounds within about fifteen minutes of town. Vista Royale Campground Ltd sits on Isherwood Road in Bancroft itself, while Oasis Campground and Waterpark is a short hop south off I-39 near Hancock. Ridgewood Campground, Wild West Campground and Corral, and Fountain Lake RV Park Inc round out the nearby options across the surrounding sandy-plains countryside.
Because I-39 runs right past town, Bancroft works well as a base for day trips to Wisconsin Dells, Stevens Point, and the Chain O' Lakes without giving up quiet nights at the campground.
Things to do around Bancroft
Water is the main draw. The Waupaca Chain O' Lakes is a system of interconnected spring-fed lakes offering fishing for musky, walleye, bass, northern pike, and panfish, along with public boat landings and clear-water swimming spots. Oasis Campground and Waterpark runs an inflatable waterpark and pool from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, a reliable rainy-afternoon backup for families.
On land, Portage County Parks manages Standing Rocks County Park for mountain biking, disc golf, hiking, and cross-country skiing, and the Tomorrow River State Trail runs through the county starting in Plover. ATV and UTV routes pass Oasis in Hancock, so riders can leave camp on wheels. Stevens Point, about twenty minutes north, adds a brewery scene, the Green Circle Trail, and shopping for restock runs.

Oasis Campground and Waterpark operates roughly May through October, with the pool and inflatable waterpark open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Portage County Parks campgrounds are open May 1 through October 31.
Summer, from mid-June through late August, is peak season. Water temperatures on the Chain O' Lakes are swimmable, all campground amenities are running, and weekends book heavily. July and August are the warmest months, with average highs in the upper 70s Fahrenheit and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Bugs peak in June near wetlands.
Spring and fall shoulder seasons are quieter but colder at night, and some pool and waterpark features close after Labor Day. Winter camping options are very limited in the immediate area; most private parks close for the season, and the closest Wisconsin State Park System properties that stay open in winter are farther afield.
How to book near Bancroft
Private campgrounds near Bancroft handle their own reservations directly. Vista Royale Campground Ltd, Oasis Campground and Waterpark, Ridgewood Campground, Wild West Campground and Corral, and Fountain Lake RV Park Inc all take bookings by phone or through their own websites. For summer weekends and holiday periods, plan on booking several months out.
For Wisconsin State Park System properties within driving range, reservations run through the DNR's Going to Camp system at wisconsin.goingtocamp.com or by calling 1-888-947-2757. Sites can be reserved up to 11 months before the arrival date, and popular electric loops sell out well ahead of summer weekends.
Portage County Parks campgrounds take reservations online through the county parks reservation site up to 11 months ahead, with a 7-day minimum lead time and a two-night minimum; shorter stays require self-registering in person at the campground. Only daily rates apply.
What to expect around Bancroft
Terrain around Bancroft is mostly flat with sandy soil, which means level RV sites, easy pull-ins, and quick drainage after rain. Big-rig access is straightforward: Oasis Campground and Waterpark is one exit off I-39 at Hancock with fuel available at the exit, and most parks in this area are set up for full-size travel trailers and Class A motorhomes.
Expect a family-oriented atmosphere at Oasis Campground and Waterpark and Vista Royale Campground Ltd, with pools, activity weekends, and cabin rentals alongside RV sites. Cell coverage along the I-39 corridor is generally reliable.
Bring bug spray from late May through July, pack layers for cool nights even in summer, and buy firewood locally: Wisconsin restricts moving firewood onto state properties from more than 10 miles away to slow the spread of invasive pests.
