Camping near Barneveld, Wisconsin
Barneveld sits in the Driftless Area of southwestern Wisconsin, a landscape of ridges, valleys, and trout streams that escaped glaciation. The village is roughly 25 miles west of Madison along US-18/151, which puts several state parks within a short drive and makes it a practical base for RV travel across Iowa and Dane counties.
The nearest campground is Blue Mound State Park, set atop the highest hill in southern Wisconsin. Tower Hill State Park sits above the Wisconsin River near Spring Green, while Twin Valley at Governor Dodge State Park anchors one of the state's largest parks a short drive west. Yellowstone Lake State Park lies south in Lafayette County, and Wisconsin Riverside Resort, Inc. offers a private-park alternative along the river.
Most sites in this area are wooded and pitched into rolling terrain, so RV renters should expect some unlevel pads and should plan to bring leveling blocks. Electric hookups exist at many state park sites, but water and sewer hookups at the site are not standard; dump stations are provided at the larger parks.
Things to do near Barneveld
Hiking and biking dominate the area. Blue Mound State Park has miles of trails plus two 40-foot observation towers and a swimming pool, and it connects directly to the Military Ridge State Trail, a crushed-limestone rail-trail that runs east toward Madison. Governor Dodge State Park adds two lakes with swim beaches, a waterfall at Stephens Falls, and a large equestrian trail network.
Water recreation centers on the Wisconsin River, with a canoe landing at Tower Hill State Park and fishing, kayaking, and swimming at Yellowstone Lake. Nearby attractions include Cave of the Mounds, the House on the Rock, and Taliesin near Spring Green, all reachable within a short drive from Barneveld.

Peak season runs from Memorial Day through mid-October. Summer weekends fill quickly at Blue Mound State Park and Governor Dodge, especially during University of Wisconsin football weekends and Madison events. Reserving several months out is standard for Friday and Saturday nights in July and August, and mosquitoes can be heavy near river-bottom sites, so bring repellent.
Fall is a strong shoulder season. Oak and maple color typically peaks in mid-October across the Driftless ridges, and nights turn cool. Some services scale back later in the year: Yellowstone Lake's campground is typically open mid-April through November, while Governor Dodge and Blue Mound keep more amenities running into the shoulder months.
Winter camping is possible at Blue Mound, which stays open year-round, and at more than 30 designated winter sites in Twin Valley at Governor Dodge, a few of which are plowed. Expect cold nights, snow-covered trails, and limited water service.

Ross was great to work with & the experience exceeded our expectations! He was very accommodating with pick up- we live out of state and ran into unexpected delays on our way to pick up. The rental was very clean, came stocked with anything we needed, and was a very pleasant experience. We will be repeat renters!

How to book campsites near Barneveld
Wisconsin state park campsites, including Blue Mound State Park, Tower Hill State Park, Twin Valley at Governor Dodge State Park, and Yellowstone Lake State Park, are reserved through the Wisconsin DNR reservation system at wisconsin.goingtocamp.com. Sites can be booked from the day of arrival up to 11 months in advance. Same-day reservations are allowed if inventory remains and carry no reservation fee.
All vehicles entering a Wisconsin state park must display a valid State Park Vehicle Admission Pass, purchased daily or annually; this is separate from the nightly camping fee. Check-in is 3 p.m. and checkout is 1 p.m. across the state park system.
Wisconsin Riverside Resort, Inc. is a private campground and books directly through the resort rather than the DNR system.
What to expect at Barneveld-area campgrounds
Sites in the state parks are typically wooded and spaced for reasonable privacy. Blue Mound has 78 family sites plus 12 hike- and bike-in sites, with a modern flush toilet and shower building and a dump station at the campground entrance, but no water hookups at individual sites. Some pads are noticeably unlevel, so inspect the site before committing a large rig.
Governor Dodge is the largest option, with 269 standard sites split between Twin Valley and Cox Hollow campgrounds and electric hookups at 80 of them. Yellowstone Lake offers 128 individual sites, 38 with electric, and adds flush toilets, showers, and a dump station seasonally. Tower Hill is smaller and more rustic than the other state parks, with limited amenities.
Cell coverage is spotty in the valleys, firewood is often sold on-site, and pets are welcome on a leash no longer than 8 feet in Wisconsin state parks but are excluded from beaches and picnic areas.
