Camping near Butte des Morts, Wisconsin
Butte des Morts is a small unincorporated community in Winnebago County on the north shore of Lake Butte des Morts, a shallow 8,581-acre lake in the Winnebago chain. The lake connects the Wolf and Fox Rivers and is part of the larger Winnebago pool that also includes Lakes Poygan, Winneconne, and Winnebago. RV travelers use the area as a quiet base for fishing, boating, and easy day trips to Oshkosh, Neenah, and Appleton.
Campground options in the immediate area lean toward small, family-run parks rather than large resorts. Omro RV Park sits just west along the Fox River, while Hickory Oaks Campground and Sleepy Hollow Farm offer wooded and rural sites within a short drive. Osh Vegas Palms RV Resort adds a more amenity-heavy option closer to Oshkosh.
Most private campgrounds in the area run a seasonal calendar tied to Wisconsin's short frost-free window, and reservations tighten sharply during the late-July EAA AirVenture fly-in at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh.
Things to do near Butte des Morts
Fishing drives most trips. Lake Butte des Morts holds walleye, northern pike, largemouth and smallmouth bass, panfish, catfish, muskie, and lake sturgeon, with the spring walleye and white bass runs on the Wolf and Fox Rivers drawing anglers from across the country. Public boat landings ring the lake, and ice fishing continues through the winter months.
Boating, water skiing, and paddling are popular during the warm months, though shallow off-channel areas and unmarked rock piles mean larger boats should stick to the marked navigation channel. Off the water, the Oshkosh area adds the EAA Aviation Museum, riverfront parks, farmers' markets, and short drives to High Cliff State Park on Lake Winnebago's east shore.

Peak camping season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with warm days, active fisheries, and full campground amenities. Late July brings EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, the world's largest fly-in, which draws hundreds of thousands of visitors and can push nearby private campgrounds to capacity many months in advance. RV renters targeting that week should book as early as possible.
Spring shoulder season, roughly April into May, centers on the walleye and white bass migration up the Wolf and Fox Rivers. Nights remain cold and some private parks open only in mid to late April, so hookup availability varies. September and early October offer cooler nights, thinner crowds, and fall color along the river corridors.
Winters are cold and snowy. Most private campgrounds close for the season, though ice fishing on the Winnebago pool continues from roughly late December through February when ice conditions allow.

Crystal and Kevin were awesome hosts! Crystal was very thorough with communication and organization and had helpful tips for us as first-time RV campers. Kevin set up and did a detailed walk through and showed us all the cool features of the RV. It was clean and smelled like a fancy hotel room, and they really thought of everything, even extra nice touches like 2 packets of Door County coffee. Would 100% recommend renting this RV from these great hosts!

How to book campgrounds in the area
Private campgrounds around Butte des Morts, including Omro RV Park, Hickory Oaks Campground, Sleepy Hollow Farm, Sleepy Hollow Farm Campground, and Osh Vegas Palms RV Resort, are booked directly with each operator by phone or through the campground's own website. Weekend and holiday sites go quickly in summer, and the week of EAA AirVenture typically fills nearly a year out.
For public campgrounds, the Wisconsin State Park System uses a single reservation portal at wisconsin.goingtocamp.com or the reservation line at 1-888-947-2757. Reservations open up to 11 months before the planned arrival date, and every vehicle entering a state park or forest also needs a daily or annual admission pass in addition to the site fee.
What to expect on the ground
The terrain around Butte des Morts is flat to gently rolling, with a mix of farm fields, small woodlots, and lakeshore. Roads into private campgrounds are generally paved or well-graded gravel and are suitable for typical rental Class C motorhomes and travel trailers. Cell coverage is reliable across the corridor between Oshkosh, Omro, and Winneconne.
Expect a rural, family-oriented feel rather than a resort atmosphere. Bugs, mosquitoes and biting flies, can be heavy in early summer near the marshes and river backwaters, so screens and repellent matter. Summer thunderstorms can arrive quickly, and the shallow Winnebago pool lakes become rough in wind, so it is worth checking a forecast before launching a boat.

If big-rig driving feels intimidating, choose a Class B campervan rental in Butte des Morts or a smaller travel trailer, both handle much like a large van.
