Campgrounds and RV parks near Darlington, WI

Water is the main draw. Renters can paddle or fish the Pecatonica River from the canoe launch at Pecatonica River Trails Park, or swim, boat, and fish for bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye, northern pike, and muskellunge at Yellowstone Lake State Park. Yellowstone Lake also has a sand swimming beach, picnic areas, and playgrounds that work well for families with kids. On land, the Cheese Country Recreation Trail runs beside Pecatonica River Trails Park and is popular with ATV and UTV riders, snowmobilers, and walkers. Apple River Canyon State Park offers five hiking trails, including Pine Ridge, Tower Rock, River Route, Sunset, and the accessible Primrose Trail, plus trout fishing after spring stocking. Historic small towns such as Shullsburg and Mineral Point are short day trips for shops, restaurants, and Main Street sightseeing.

The RV camping season in this part of Wisconsin runs roughly mid-April through late October. Yellowstone Lake State Park's campground is typically open from mid-April through November, with vault toilets and drinking water available year-round and flush toilets, showers, and the dump station operating seasonally. At Pecatonica River Trails Park, water service to campsites, the bath house, and the dump station is shut off from November 1 through April 15, so full amenities are only available in the warmer months. Summer, from June through August, is peak season. Weekends at Yellowstone Lake fill fast, and Apple River Canyon's Canyon Ridge Campground also books up on Fridays and holiday weekends. Late spring and early fall bring cooler nights and lighter crowds, plus fall color through the river valleys. Winter camping in the immediate Darlington area is limited. Yellowstone Lake State Park stays open for ice fishing, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing, and Apple River Canyon offers winter camping in the Walnut Grove Youth Campground from November 1 through April 15.

Sites in this region are generally wooded or partly shaded, on gravel pads, and comfortable for mid-size rigs. Eight electric sites sit under a grove of walnut trees with 30-amp service, and 22 open sites offer 50-amp service, along with a dump station, water at the dump station, and a shower building. Yellowstone Lake State Park has 128 individual sites, 38 with electric hookups, plus accessible flush toilets and showers. Apple River Canyon is better suited to smaller RVs and camper vans, with a maximum RV length around 25 feet at designated sites.
