Campgrounds and RV parks near Dodgeville, WI

Governor Dodge State Park anchors most itineraries with two swim beaches on Cox Hollow Lake and Twin Valley Lake, boat launches at each lake, and a network of trails leading to Stephens Falls and the sandstone outcrops of the park's Lost Canyon area. Paddle rentals are typically available near the Cox Hollow beach concession stand in season. At Tower Hill State Park, visitors can tour the reconstructed shot tower and smelter house, hike bluff trails above the Wisconsin River, and put in canoes at the park's landing. Yellowstone Lake supports fishing for bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye, channel catfish, northern pike, and muskellunge, plus a sand swimming beach and adjacent wildlife-area trails. Off-park, the House on the Rock, Taliesin, and American Players Theatre are all within a short drive.

Peak camping season in the Dodgeville area runs from mid-May through early October, when all park amenities are operating and beaches, boat launches, and shower buildings are open. Weekends at Governor Dodge State Park book heavily, and reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance, so summer holiday weekends typically fill within days of opening. Spring and fall are quieter and often more comfortable for hiking the Driftless bluff trails, though shoulder-season temperatures can swing widely and mosquitoes near the Wisconsin River at Tower Hill are notorious in early summer. Fall color across the oak and hickory forests peaks in October, which is one of the most popular times for weekend stays. Winter camping is possible at Governor Dodge, where more than 30 sites in Twin Valley remain open for winter campers with electricity and pit toilets, and winter water is available at the park office. Yellowstone Lake's campground is typically open mid-April through November and closes for the coldest months, while Tower Hill's small campground is seasonal.

Sites at Twin Valley tend to be wooded and spacious, with electric hookups available at a portion of the loop and shower buildings and dump stations at both Twin Valley and Cox Hollow. Cellular coverage is generally usable but not strong in the deeper valleys, and quiet hours run from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m. Tower Hill is a small tent campground with only ten sites, vault toilets, and no electrical hookups, so it best suits smaller rigs or campers willing to boondock. Yellowstone Lake features gravel pads, shady sites, and a large family loop, with vault toilets and drinking water year-round and flush toilets, showers, and a dump station open seasonally. Bring bug spray for river-adjacent sites, plan for hilly terrain when navigating longer motorhomes, and pack layers, as overnight lows drop sharply even in summer.
