Campgrounds near Elroy, Wisconsin
Elroy sits in Wisconsin's Driftless Area at the junction of three rail-trails: the Elroy-Sparta State Trail, the 400 State Trail, and the Omaha Trail. The town works well as an RV base for exploring ridge-and-valley country, sandstone bluffs, and the region's converted railroad-tunnel bike paths. Most nearby camping falls into two categories: private RV parks with hookups and Wisconsin state park campgrounds with a mix of rustic and electric sites.
Chapparal Campground And Resort and Tunnel Trail Campground are the closest full-service private options and sit near the trail corridor. Oakdale KOA Journey is about a half-hour north along Interstate 90/94 and is a common overnight for travelers passing through.
For state park camping, Mill Bluff State Park has a small family campground with 21 wooded or partially wooded sites, six of which offer electrical hookups, and the park is open May through September. Horse Camp at Wildcat Mountain State Park serves riders with equestrian sites above the Kickapoo River valley. Mill Bluff is part of the Ice Age National Scientific Reserve, protecting Cambrian sandstone bluffs that once stood as sea stacks in Glacial Lake Wisconsin.
Things to do around Elroy
Biking is the main draw. The Elroy-Sparta State Trail, the 400 State Trail, and the Omaha Trail all meet in or near town, giving RV travelers direct access to crushed-limestone rail-trail riding through farmland, river valleys, and the three historic railroad tunnels on the 32.5-mile Elroy-Sparta segment. Two of those tunnels are about a quarter mile long and the third runs about three-quarters of a mile, so flashlights and a light jacket are recommended. The tunnels are closed annually from November 1 to April 30. Rentals and shuttles operate seasonally in Elroy, Kendall, and Wilton.
At Mill Bluff State Park, sandstone bluffs rise from a former glacial lakebed and a small spring-fed swimming pond with a sand beach sits south of the campground. Wildcat Mountain State Park adds ridge overlooks and paddling on the Kickapoo River. Amish farm stands, trout streams, and small-town diners round out the itinerary.

The camping season is short and concentrated. Mill Bluff State Park is open May through September, and most private RV parks in the area follow a similar April-through-October window. Winter closes the state park campgrounds and most private grounds, and the three Elroy-Sparta tunnels are gated from November 1 through April 30, though the rail-trail corridors themselves see limited use for snowshoeing and, where allowed, fat-biking and snowmobiling.
June through August is peak season. Weekends fill quickly at trail-adjacent campgrounds because the Elroy-Sparta corridor draws heavy cyclist traffic and family bookings. Mosquitoes can be heavy in the wooded state park loops during summer, and poison ivy is present in the camping area, so plan repellent and long pants for trail work.
September and early October are a strong shoulder window. Nighttime lows drop into the 40s Fahrenheit, biting-insect pressure eases, and hardwood color peaks in the Driftless ridges. Late-season travelers should confirm water is still on at private parks and pack for freezing overnight temperatures by late October.
How to book Elroy campgrounds
Wisconsin state park sites are reserved through the state's Wisconsin Go Camping portal (operated on GoingToCamp), and reservations can be made up to 11 months before the arrival date, either online or by calling 1-888-947-2757. Sites at Mill Bluff State Park and Horse Camp at Wildcat Mountain State Park release on that rolling 11-month window, and popular summer weekends often sell out shortly after release. Advance reservations booked before May 15 for stays between May 15 and October 31 require a minimum two-night stay, and holiday weekends require three nights.
Private options, including Chapparal Campground And Resort, Tunnel Trail Campground, and Oakdale KOA Journey, book directly through each campground's website or by phone. For summer holiday weekends, reserve two to three months ahead. Confirm rig length, hookup type, and whether the site accommodates slide-outs before booking.
What to expect on-site
Private parks near Elroy typically offer full or partial hookups, a dump station, hot showers, and easy trail access. Sites range from open pull-throughs to shaded back-ins under mature hardwoods. Cell coverage is generally usable but not fast, and some ridge-top locations lose signal.
State park camping is more rustic. Mill Bluff has 21 wooded or partially-wooded sites with six offering electrical hookups, and the park has vault toilets and hand pumps but no showers on-site. Larger Class A rigs should verify site length before booking a state park loop, since the campground is described as accommodating RVs up to about 40 feet.
Expect quiet hours to be enforced, firewood to be sold on-site to prevent pest transport, pets to be leashed on a lead no longer than eight feet, and dogs to be prohibited from swim beaches and some picnic areas. A Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission pass is required for every vehicle brought into a state park.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elroy%2C%20WisconsinDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Elroy, Wisconsin?
A regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Elroy and drive anywhere in Wisconsin, as long as the motorhome is used recreationally and not commercially. Wisconsin exempts recreational vehicle operators from Commercial Driver's License (CDL) requirements, which covers virtually every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, travel trailer, and fifth wheel you will find on RVezy. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified inside the booking flow. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license and you are cleared to roll through the Elroy-Sparta tunnel country.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Elroy?
You are covered from the moment you book. Every RVezy booking includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so your Elroy RV trip starts with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV and is bundled into your reservation. During checkout you choose your protection level, and the right pick depends on how far you are roaming, whether deep into Juneau County's back roads or staying close to the 400 State Trail. While not insurance in the traditional sense, it gives renters meaningful financial protection so you can focus on the tunnels, not the what-ifs.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Elroy RV rental?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every rental, and there is a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. The exact refund window depends on how far out you are from your trip. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credit so your plans stay on track. If something unexpected comes up, the RVezy support team can walk you through your options. Pro tip: reserve your favorite Elroy RV rental early for July Fourth weekend, since the best rigs near the Elroy-Sparta State Trail book months in advance.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an Elroy RV trip?
Absolutely, dogs love this corner of Wisconsin. Filter for a pet-friendly RV rental in Elroy on RVezy and you will see plenty of hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots, usually with a small pet fee. Wildcat Mountain State Park, about 25 miles west, allows leashed pets in the campground and on designated pet trails, and the Elroy-Sparta State Trail is dog-friendly along its full length. Schultz City Park in Elroy has shaded grass along the Baraboo River that is perfect for a post-ride break. Pro tip: bring a headlamp and a short leash for the three rail tunnels, dogs do great inside but the cool darkness can surprise them.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/wildcatCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Elroy?
Yes, and it is the easiest way to do your first Elroy RV trip. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery in Elroy and will drop the rig at Schultz City Park, the Elroy Commons trailhead area, or popular spots like Tunnel Trail Campground between Kendall and Wilton. Your host levels the RV, hooks up shore power and water, and walks you through every system before handing over the keys, so you never have to back a trailer on day one. Filter listings by Delivery, message the host with your campground name, and confirm any mileage fee for the drop. It is a game-changer for first time renting an RV.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elroy%2C%20WisconsinHow far can I drive from Elroy on a typical RV rental?
Plenty far for an unforgettable Elroy RV trip. From Elroy you can reach Wisconsin Dells in about 45 minutes (35 miles), Wildcat Mountain State Park in 40 minutes (25 miles), Mirror Lake State Park in under an hour (40 miles), La Crosse and the Mississippi River in about 90 minutes (75 miles), and Madison in roughly 1 hour 45 minutes (90 miles). Going farther? Door County is a scenic 4 to 5 hour run east. Pro tip: message the host before booking to request extra miles if you are planning a big loop.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/mirrorlakeWhere are the best campgrounds near Elroy, WI?
You are spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Elroy include Tunnel Trail Campground between Kendall and Wilton (full hookups right on the Elroy-Sparta State Trail), Schultz City Park in Elroy (electric sites along the Baraboo River near the 400 Trail, with a pool and showers), Wildcat Mountain State Park near Ontario (reservable sites with showers and a dump station overlooking the Kickapoo Valley), and Mirror Lake State Park about 40 miles east (multiple campgrounds with electric and non-electric sites). dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/wildcat/recreation/campingWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Elroy?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for RV camping in Elroy and the Driftless Region. The three hand-dug tunnels on the Elroy-Sparta State Trail are typically open from early May through early November (closed in winter to protect the historic portals and resident bats), so plan around that window if biking the tunnels is the goal. June through August brings warm days in the 75 to 85 F range and cool 55 to 65 F nights, perfect for sleeping with the RV windows cracked. September is the local insider pick: fewer crowds, vivid Driftless fall color in the oak and maple bluffs, and 65 to 75 F afternoons.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/elroyspartaI have never driven an RV before. Is Elroy a good place to start?
Elroy is one of the most forgiving places in Wisconsin for first time renting an RV. The roads in and around town (State Highways 80, 82, and 71) are wide, lightly trafficked, and built for farm equipment, so a Class C or travel trailer feels manageable. Your RVezy host gives a full walkthrough at pickup, covering generator, leveling, water hookups, slide-outs, and dump procedures, and you can message them any time during your trip. Choose Delivery if you would rather skip driving altogether. Pro tip: do a short shakedown drive on Highway 71 toward Wonewoc before heading to your campground, you will be a confident driver inside 20 minutes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360003359693-Renting-an-RVWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You are never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on State Highway 71 or a dead battery at Wildcat Mountain is one phone call away from help. The roadside team coordinates tows, jump-starts, lockouts, and tire service across rural Juneau and Monroe Counties, where cell service can be spotty in the coulees. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app, they often know the closest service shop in Mauston, Tomah, or Reedsburg. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after every trip. Pro tip: download offline maps for the Driftless Region before you leave Elroy.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106954-Roadside-assistanceCan I take my Elroy RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is part of the magic of an RV road trip from Elroy. Popular runs include the Mississippi River bluffs into Minnesota (under 2 hours to La Crescent), the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (about 5 hours north), and Chicago in roughly 3.5 hours via I-90. Cross-border travel into Canada is allowed on many RVezy rentals subject to host approval and insurance, so message the host before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: if you are chasing Lake Superior, route through Bayfield and the Apostle Islands, it is a stunning 5 to 6 hour drive from Elroy.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for an Elroy RV trip?
Easy to plan for. Expect roughly 8 to 10 MPG for a Class A, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C, 18 to 22 MPG for a Class B campervan, and 12 to 16 MPG for a truck towing a travel trailer through the rolling Driftless hills. Wisconsin gas prices generally run in the low to mid $3 per gallon range for regular unleaded, and the closest stations to Elroy are Kwik Trip in Mauston (about 15 miles east) and stations in Reedsburg and Tomah. For a 4-night loop covering 400 miles in a Class C, budget around $115 to $160 in fuel. Pro tip: Kwik Trip is the local favorite for clean restrooms and good coffee.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Elroy?
For Wisconsin state parks, reserve as early as possible: campsites at Wildcat Mountain, Mirror Lake, and Devil's Lake open for reservation 11 months ahead through the official Wisconsin State Park System reservation site, and summer weekends near Elroy genuinely sell out that early. For private parks like Tunnel Trail Campground or Schultz City Park in Elroy, 2 to 4 weeks ahead is usually fine outside of July Fourth and Labor Day. Pro tip: book your RVezy rental first, then your campsite, so you know your rig length before reserving a site.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Elroy?
Driving around Elroy is relaxing compared to most RV destinations. You are in the Driftless Region, so roads like Highways 71, 80, and 82 wind gently through farmland, river valleys, and wooded ridges without the steep mountain grades you would hit out west. Watch for Amish horse-and-buggy traffic on county roads (especially Highway 33 toward Cashton), deer at dawn and dusk, and occasional washboard gravel on back roads after heavy rain. Winter brings snow and ice from December through March, so most renters stick to May through October. Pro tip: avoid narrow downtown side streets in Elroy with a large rig and stick to the state highway routes.
511wi.gov/What hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near Elroy?
You will find a healthy mix. Private parks like Tunnel Trail Campground and Schultz City Park in Elroy offer 30 and 50-amp electric, water, and on-site dump stations, with showers and flush toilets. Wisconsin state parks like Wildcat Mountain and Mirror Lake have electric sites (no sewer at the pad), centralized dump stations, drinking water spigots, showers, and flush toilets in season. To fill fresh water and dump tanks between trips, Mirror Lake State Park and the Kwik Trip in Mauston are reliable options. Pro tip: ask your host to top off propane and fresh water before delivery.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/mirrorlake/recreation/campingWhat is typically included inside an Elroy RV rental?
More than you would expect. A typical motorhome rental in Elroy comes fully equipped: queen or king bed, convertible dinette, full kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a wet or dry bath with toilet and shower, roof A/C, furnace, and seatbelted seating for the whole crew. Most Class C and Class A rigs include a generator for off-grid power, and many hosts add a TV, Bluetooth stereo, and outdoor awning. Campervan rental Elroy options (Class B) are more compact but include the essentials plus better fuel economy. WiFi is hit-or-miss in the Driftless coulees, so plan for offline entertainment. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count and bathroom type to match your family size.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elroy%2C%20WisconsinWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in Elroy offer some genuinely useful add-ons: bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, bike racks (perfect for the Elroy-Sparta State Trail), outdoor camp chairs and tables, generator hours, and propane top-offs. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Elroy, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Drop-off is the same location and time on your return day, and one-way trips may be possible, message the host directly to ask. Mileage policies typically run 100 to 150 free miles per night with a per-mile overage fee. Pro tip: book a host who offers bike racks so you can ride the 400 State Trail straight from your campsite.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elroy%2C%20WisconsinHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
It is straightforward and secure. You pay for your Elroy RV rental directly through RVezy at booking using a credit or debit card, with no cash exchanges with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value) and is released after your trip ends, assuming no damage or policy violations. Extra mileage, late returns, or generator overages can be deducted from the deposit. To avoid issues, take dated photos at pickup and drop-off, and return the RV with the same fuel and propane level. Pro tip: confirm dump and fuel expectations in writing via RVezy messaging before pickup.
