Campgrounds near Fox Lake, Wisconsin
Fox Lake sits in northwestern Dodge County in south-central Wisconsin, on the shore of a 2,713-acre lake that anchors most of the recreation in the area. The lake holds panfish, muskellunge, largemouth bass, northern pike, and walleye, which makes it a common base for anglers and boaters traveling with an RV.
Campgrounds within roughly an hour of the city fall into two groups. Closest to town, small parks like Fairgrounds RV Park in Beaver Dam sit next to the Dodge County Fairgrounds event calendar. Farther afield, family-oriented resorts such as Silver Springs Campsites near Rio and Glacier Valley Campground provide pools, cabins, and organized activities better suited to longer stays with kids.
Access is straightforward for larger rigs. Dodge County is largely flat farmland with wide two-lane highways like WI-33, WI-73, and US-151, so Class A motorhomes and fifth wheels can reach most parks without navigating tight mountain roads or steep grades.
Things to do around Fox Lake
The lake itself is the main draw. Public boat landings operate at Town Park on the northwest side and at Clausen Park in the City of Fox Lake, and the lake has several public fishing piers with tournaments held throughout the year. Kayakers and small tow-behind boats will find launching easy.
Off the water, day trips are short. Horicon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge sits about half an hour south for birding and auto tours, and the village of Green Lake is a similar drive north for swimming beaches and downtown dining. Families staying at Silver Springs Campsites can also stick close to camp: the property is built around a spring-fed pond with swimming, water toys, fishing, canoeing, and paddle boats, plus a heated pool.

- winter
December - February
27° / 12°F 30 mmFreezing and snowy; campgrounds closed.
The camping season is short and clearly defined. Most private and municipal parks in the area run from roughly May through mid-October, and Hattie Sherwood Campground in nearby Green Lake follows that pattern with an open season of May 1 through October 15. Silver Springs Campsites near Rio operates on a similar seasonal schedule, opening in mid-spring and closing at the end of September for overnight guests.
July and August are peak. Weekends fill quickly, especially around Independence Day and any Dodge County Fairgrounds event. Late May, early June, and September are quieter and typically easier to book on shorter notice, with cooler nights that suit shoulder-season travelers.
Winter is not a practical RV season. Snow and cold run from November through March, deep freezes are common, water systems at private parks are shut down, and gates at most campgrounds stay closed until spring.

How to book campgrounds near Fox Lake
Private parks in the area take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and popular family resorts fill earliest. For summer weekends at Silver Springs Campsites or Glacier Valley Campground, plan to book two to three months ahead. Shady Oaks Campground near Markesan leans more toward long-term guests with limited overnight availability, so it is worth confirming open sites by phone.
Municipal parks have their own rules. At Hattie Sherwood Campground, a reservation may be modified or canceled up to 14 days prior to arrival, and stays are capped at 9 consecutive days. Calling ahead is smart if you want a specific site number or a lakeside view.
What to expect on the ground
Sites near Fox Lake trend rustic to mid-tier rather than luxury. Municipal parks like Hattie Sherwood offer 38 sites, modern restrooms with showers, and electric hookups on some sites, plus a dump station and potable water, but not full hookups on every site. Larger private resorts add pools, laundry, camp stores, and cabins.
Expect wooded, grassy sites with mature hardwoods rather than open pads. Big rigs are generally accommodated, but confirm site length when booking. Silver Springs, for example, accommodates RVs up to 60 feet with electric and water hookups, and full hookups on select sites.
Driving in the area is easy. Watch for occasional farm equipment in spring and fall, deer at dawn and dusk, and the rare summer thunderstorm that can bring strong crosswinds.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Fox%20Lake%2C%20WisconsinDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Fox Lake, Wisconsin?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Fox Lake. Wisconsin only requires a Commercial Driver License (CDL) for recreational vehicles longer than 45 feet, and virtually every RV on RVezy falls well under that limit. You'll need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy confirms your ID right through the platform during booking, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the U.S.? An International Driving Permit paired with your home license works perfectly. Most first-time renters in Wisconsin are surprised how quick and simple the whole process is.

Every RV rental in Fox Lake booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right in, so you can hit the road with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers most damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose the coverage level that fits your comfort during checkout, not the host. It offers strong financial protection against the unexpected, whether that's a stone chip on Highway 151 or a bumped awning at the campground. Pro tip: review the coverage options carefully at booking, then enjoy your Wisconsin getaway knowing you're backed up around the clock.

You can book with confidence: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you're never locked in the moment you click confirm. Refund eligibility after that depends on how far out from your trip you cancel. You'll see the exact cancellation terms before you pay, and RVezy support is available to help if life gets in the way. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Fox Lake rigs, knowing you have flexibility if plans change.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Fox Lake RV trip?
Absolutely, and Fox Lake is a fantastic place to bring a pup. Plenty of pet-friendly RV rental Fox Lake listings welcome dogs, so just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when searching on RVezy. Once you're here, Wisconsin State Parks and properties like the nearby Horicon Marsh State Wildlife Area allow leashed pets on most trails and campground loops (leashes must be 8 feet or shorter). Clausen Park right on Fox Lake itself is great for a shoreline stroll. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet cleaning fee, and bring a towel for sandy paws after a swim, since Fox Lake's spring-fed waters are hard for any dog to resist.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/camping/faqCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Fox Lake?
Yes, RV delivery Fox Lake is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, and many local hosts offer it. They'll drive the motorhome or trailer right to your reserved campground site or your own driveway, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. This is especially popular for first-timers and families who want to skip towing a fifth wheel down Highway 33. To book it, use the Delivery filter when searching, then confirm the delivery distance and fee with the host. Pro tip: delivery often pays for itself on a campervan rental Fox Lake stay when you factor in fuel and stress saved.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Fox%20Lake%2C%20WisconsinHow far can I drive on a Fox Lake RV trip?
You have huge range from Fox Lake, and RVezy hosts set their own daily mileage policies, with some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage. From Fox Lake you're about 50 miles from Madison, 80 miles to Milwaukee, 60 miles north to the Wisconsin Dells, 100 miles to Green Bay, and roughly 175 miles southeast to Chicago. Door County, Wisconsin's famous peninsula, sits about 175 miles to the northeast. Before booking, check the listing's mileage allowance and ask the host about overage rates if you're planning a big loop. Pro tip: a typical 250-mile-per-day allotment easily covers a Dells-and-back weekend with plenty of room for side trips along the Wisconsin River.
travelwisconsin.com/Where are the best campgrounds near Fox Lake, WI?

Top picks include Hidden Valley RV Resort and Campground in Beaver Dam (about 15 miles away, full hookups and a swimming pool), Westwood Shores Resort right on Beaver Dam Lake, Fox Hill RV Resort near the Wisconsin Dells (about 50 miles, 70 wooded acres), and Horicon Ledge Park County Campground overlooking the famous Horicon Marsh. For state-park lovers, Devil's Lake State Park near Baraboo is roughly an hour west and consistently ranks as Wisconsin's #1 park. Pro tip: book Devil's Lake and other Wisconsin state park sites through the Going to Camp system, which opens 11 months in advance and fills fast for summer weekends.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/campingWhen is the best time to rent an RV in Fox Lake?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for a Fox Lake RV trip, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 70s to low 80s and the lake is warm enough for swimming, walleye fishing, and tubing. June and August are peak, while September brings crisp mornings, fewer mosquitoes, and stunning fall color along the Niagara Escarpment. Winters here are genuinely cold (January highs hover around 25°F with regular snow), so most rentals run April through October. Pro tip: target the second week of September for a motorhome rental Fox Lake getaway and you'll enjoy 70-degree afternoons, empty boat launches, and shoulder-season pricing.
forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=Fox+Lake&state=WIIs renting an RV hard if it's my first time?
Not at all, and first time renting an RV in Fox Lake is genuinely fun. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup or delivery, covering propane, the water pump, slide-outs, the awning, and dump procedures, and many provide a printed cheat sheet. The roads around Dodge County are flat and quiet (think County Road A and Highway 33), making them ideal for learning the feel of a bigger rig before tackling busier routes. You can also message your host any time during the trip. Pro tip: start with a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer for your first booking, do a slow practice loop around Fox Lake's 18-mile shoreline, and you'll feel confident in an afternoon.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/towing-a-trailerWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're covered around the clock. Every RV rental in Fox Lake booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so if you get a flat on Highway 151, a dead battery at the campground, or a tow is needed, one phone call gets help moving. Your host is also typically just a text away for questions about the rig's quirks, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip through the Help Center. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone before you leave the host's driveway, and snap a photo of the VIN and license plate so you have it ready if you ever need to call.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Fox Lake RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Fox Lake across state lines is totally doable, and many travelers head south to Illinois (Chicago is about 175 miles), west into Minnesota, or north toward Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Some hosts also allow cross-border trips into Canada, which is great for a Lake Superior loop, but you'll need to confirm this with the host before booking and travel with your passport. Important: travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: a popular 4-day loop from Fox Lake heads up Highway 41 to Door County and back through Green Bay, all on easy two-lane roads with great Lake Michigan views.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much fuel should I budget for my Fox Lake RV trip?
Budgeting fuel is easy once you know your rig. Class C motorhomes around Fox Lake average 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A rigs run 6 to 10 MPG, and a small travel trailer behind a half-ton truck lands around 10 to 14 MPG. Wisconsin gas prices in 2026 typically run between $3.10 and $3.60 per gallon, with stations along Highway 151 in Beaver Dam and Waupun usually a few cents cheaper than those near tourist hubs like the Dells. For a 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Waupun before heading north to the Dells, where prices tend to climb with the tourist traffic.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Fox Lake?
Book early and you'll have your pick. Wisconsin State Park campsites at places like Devil's Lake, Kohler-Andrae, and Mirror Lake open for reservations 11 months in advance through wisconsin.goingtocamp.com, and the prime summer Saturdays at Devil's Lake often fill within days. Private parks like Fox Hill RV Resort and Hidden Valley typically book up 2 to 3 months ahead for July and August weekends. For shoulder-season trips in May or September, 3 to 4 weeks of lead time is usually plenty. Pro tip: set a free Notify Me alert on Going to Camp for cancellations, since Wisconsin allows cancellations up to 2 days before arrival, meaning prime sites open up constantly.

Winter brings snow and ice from November through March, so most RV rentals are seasonal. Pro tip: avoid driving through downtown Madison during weekday rush hour on a long rig and instead loop around on the Beltline (US-12/18) for a stress-free pass-through.

Mileage policies vary, with most listings including 100 to 150 miles per day and some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage for an upgrade. Pro tip: when you rent an RV in Fox Lake, ask the host about a fishing-gear add-on since Fox Lake is a top 10 walleye lake in Wisconsin with over 700,000 fish pulled annually.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/fishingHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy at booking using a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which keeps everything tracked and protected. A refundable security deposit is held on your card before pickup (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) and released after the trip ends, assuming everything's returned in good shape. Hosts can't charge random fees outside the platform, so what you see at checkout is what you pay. Pro tip: do a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff to document the RV's condition, which makes any post-trip questions about your deposit easy to resolve and keeps your Fox Lake RV trip stress-free.
