Campgrounds and RV parks near Howards Grove, WI

Lake Michigan is the main draw. Harrington Beach State Park is a 715-acre Wisconsin state park on the shore of Lake Michigan in the Town of Belgium, and in addition to a mile-long beach, the park contains a white cedar swamp surrounding a 26-acre lake that used to be a stone quarry. Kohler-Andrae is known for its sand dunes, the Dunes Cordwalk, and the Sanderling Nature Center. Motorsports fans have Road America a few miles west. The 4-mile, 14-turn road race circuit hosts IndyCar, IMSA, NASCAR, and MotoAmerica weekends across the season, with viewing areas, concessions, and family activities around the property. Other nearby options include hiking and mountain biking in the Kettle Moraine State Forest, fishing at Quarry Lake and Puckett's Pond inside Harrington Beach, and the Old Plank Road Trail connecting Greenbush to Sheboygan's lakefront.

The camping window in this part of Wisconsin runs primarily from late spring through mid-fall. State park campgrounds follow different calendars: the campground at Kohler-Andrae is open all year, with a limited set of family sites and both group sites plowed for winter camping, while Harrington Beach State Park has a 69-unit family campground that is open from the first Wednesday in May through October. Private resorts near Plymouth generally run a similar May-through-October season. Summer is the busiest stretch. Lakeshore sites, especially electric loops, book out early for weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Road America race weekends draw large crowds; camping at both the track and nearby resorts fills well in advance for IndyCar, NASCAR, and IMSA events. Shoulder seasons are quieter and often better for RV travelers who want availability. Spring brings wildflowers and cool lake breezes; fall delivers foliage across the Kettle Moraine and steadier weather. Winter camping is possible at Kohler-Andrae, with reduced services and no water at sites.

Expect a mix of hookup styles. Private resorts near Plymouth offer full hookups with water, electric, and sewer, plus cabins for guests without an RV. State park sites are more basic: campsites do not have water or sewer hookups, but a trailer dump station and a freshwater fill-up station are available in the park. Electric sites at both state parks are limited and reserve first. Site character varies. Kohler-Andrae sites sit behind the back dune along Lake Michigan, with some shaded and some open. Harrington Beach mixes wooded, walk-in, and prairie-edge sites, with clean shower buildings. Practical notes: firewood from out of state or from more than 10 miles away is not allowed on Wisconsin State Park properties, and firewood should be bought at or near the park, keep dogs leashed on trails and in campgrounds, and plan for cool nights near the lake even in July.
