Campgrounds and RV parks near La Farge, WI

La Farge sits along the Kickapoo River in Vernon County, in the heart of Wisconsin's Driftless Area. The unglaciated Driftless Region is characterized by steep valleys and ridges rising several hundred feet above valley floors. That terrain drives most of the local camping options: primitive backcountry sites along the river, a ridge-top state park, and small private grounds tucked into surrounding valleys. The headline destination is the Kickapoo Valley Reserve, an 8,569-acre tract between the villages of La Farge and Ontario in southwestern Wisconsin. Kickapoo Valley Reserve - OO Steinmetz Camp is one of its walk-in or paddle-in sites. Just upriver, Horse Camp - Wildcat Mountain State Park serves equestrian campers inside Wisconsin's state park system. Smaller private options round out the mix. West Fork Sportsmans Club draws anglers to the West Fork of the Kickapoo, Alana Springs Lodge and Campground offers quieter valley sites toward Richland Center, and Tunnel Trail Campground sits on the Elroy-Sparta State Trail for cyclists using the La Farge area as a base.

Wildcat Mountain State Park uses the Wisconsin State Park reservation system. The park has campgrounds for families and individuals, groups, and people with horses, and all three types of sites can be reserved online. A Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission sticker is required in addition to the campsite fee. Summer weekends and the fall color period book out earliest, so plan several months ahead. Kickapoo Valley Reserve runs its own permit system. All campers are required to register and obtain camping permits prior to setting up camp, available online or at the Reserve Visitor Center the day of arrival or up to 45 days in advance. This is not a first-come, first-served campground, so securing a permit ahead of time is essential. Private grounds including West Fork Sportsmans Club, Alana Springs Lodge and Campground, and Tunnel Trail Campground book directly by phone or through their websites.
