Camping near Mercer, Wisconsin
Mercer sits in southern Iron County in Wisconsin's Northwoods, surrounded by the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage and hundreds of lakes. The town is known as the Loon Capital of the World and lies along US Highway 51 between Hurley to the north and Manitowish Waters to the south. The area draws RV travelers primarily for fishing, paddling, and access to one of the largest ATV and UTV trail systems in the state.
Most campgrounds here are lakeside or river-adjacent, with a mix of Iron County parks, tribal facilities, and private resorts. Lake of The Falls County Park sits on the Turtle River between Lake of the Falls and the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage, a popular fishing destination. Schomberg County Park lies between Hurley and Mercer in the heart of the ATV trail system. Lac du Flambeau Tribal Campground and Marina, Moose Jaw Lodge and Resort, and Broken Bow Campgrounds round out the options within reasonable driving distance.
RV travelers should expect a rural setting: cell coverage is spotty, services cluster along US Highway 51, and most parks operate a seasonal window rather than year-round hookups.
Things to do around Mercer
Water dominates the itinerary. Lake of The Falls County Park offers a scenic overlook, picnic area, and 32 rustic camping facilities, plus a boat landing with access to the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage via the Turtle River. The falls themselves drop 10 feet into the Turtle River. The flowage is a major walleye, musky, and smallmouth fishery, and paddlers use it for multi-day loop trips.
On land, Iron County's ATV and UTV network is the main draw. The county forest connects with routes in neighboring counties to form the largest All-Terrain Vehicle trail system in Wisconsin, with family-friendly routes as well as more challenging terrain. Iron County ATV and UTV trails typically open in mid-May and stay open through March 31, with cold-weather riding permitted on winter trails.
Families will find swimming beaches on many lakes, waterfall drives across the county, and loon watching in early summer.

The camping window in Iron County is short. Lake of The Falls opens the Thursday before Wisconsin's fishing opener on the first Saturday of May, Schomberg County Park and the other county campgrounds open around May 15, and all county campgrounds close around October 15. Private parks generally follow a similar May-to-October schedule.
Late May through June brings the fishing opener, blackfly and mosquito pressure, and high water for paddling. July and August are peak season for families, with warm lake temperatures and stable weather; sites at popular county parks fill weeks in advance for weekends. September delivers cool nights, fewer bugs, and turning maples across the Northwoods.
Winter transforms the area into a snowmobile and ice-fishing destination, but most campgrounds close for the season. Snowmobile trails open only when conditions are appropriate, and do not open prior to December 1 or remain open past March 31. RV travelers targeting winter should confirm any year-round hookups directly with the property.
Booking and reservations in Mercer
Iron County runs its own online reservation system for its parks, and reservations are required at Lake of The Falls County Park and Schomberg County Park. Campground check-in is 3:00 pm and check-out is noon, and guests typically receive an electronic check-in a few days prior to the stay, then go directly to the site to set up.
Lac du Flambeau Tribal Campground and Marina takes bookings directly through the tribal operator. Private resorts including Moose Jaw Lodge and Resort and Broken Bow Campgrounds handle reservations by phone or through their own websites. A day-use fee per vehicle applies at county parks and boat launches.
Book summer weekends by early spring, and confirm rig length limits and hookup type before arrival, since some Iron County sites are electric-only with a shared water fill.
What to expect on arrival in Mercer
Facilities vary widely between the county parks and the private resorts. At Lake of The Falls County Park, Side 1 has electrical campsites, a pavilion, pit toilets, water, and a boat ramp; Side 2 offers quiet lakeside sites with no electricity, a pit toilet and water; Side 3 has electrical campsites, flush toilets and showers, a dump station and potable water fill. Schomberg County Park offers electrical campsites, restrooms with showers, a pavilion, dump station, and an ATV wash station, with direct trail access.
Lac du Flambeau Tribal Campground and Marina sits on a peninsula on tribal land and offers RV sites with water and electric, showers, flush toilets, and a dump station.
Firewood rules are strict. Any firewood brought into an Iron County campground must come from within 25 miles of the campground or from a Wisconsin-certified firewood dealer. Cell service is unreliable outside of Mercer itself, so download maps before leaving Highway 51.

travelwisconsin.com/northwest/iron-county/mercerWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Mercer, Wisconsin?
A regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Mercer, Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation only requires a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for recreational vehicles longer than 45 feet, and virtually every motorhome, campervan, or travel trailer on RVezy falls well under that limit. You'll need to be at least 25 years old, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the booking flow, so there are no extra trips to a DMV office. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit and you're set to explore Iron County's lakes and forests.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/dmv/drivers/drivers-license/commercial.aspxIs my Mercer RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Mercer booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on loon-spotting on the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage instead of worrying about what-ifs. You choose your coverage level (not the host) during checkout, so you can pick the peace of mind that fits your trip and budget. Plans help cover damage to the RV during your trip and include roadside support for issues like flat tires, lockouts, and towing. Review the plan details on RVezy before booking so you know exactly what is covered for your Mercer trip.

Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy at the platform level (not individual hosts), and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. The exact refund depends on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date. If a host cancels on you, RVezy helps you get a full refund or travel credit so your plans stay on track. If your plans shift, contact RVezy support and they will walk you through your options before your Mercer RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Mercer?
Absolutely, and Mercer is a tail-wagging dream destination. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see every pet-friendly RV rental Mercer hosts offer, then message the host about your pup's size and any pet fees before you book. Once you arrive, leashed dogs are welcome on the Mercer Recreational Trail and at Lake of the Falls County Park, where the waterfall and shoreline make for unforgettable photos. The Turtle-Flambeau Flowage has dog-friendly shorelines for swimming, and many local supper clubs have patios where well-behaved dogs are welcome. Pack a long lead, water bowl, and tick prevention, since the Northwoods is heavily forested.
travelwisconsin.com/article/pet-friendly/pet-friendly-wisconsinCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Mercer?
Yes, RV delivery Mercer is one of the easiest ways to start your trip stress-free, especially if it's your first time renting an RV. Many RVezy hosts will drop the rig at popular spots like Lake of the Falls County Park, Loon Lagoon RV Resort, or a private cabin rental on the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every switch and system. Just filter by Delivery on RVezy and enter your destination address to see options and delivery fees, which typically scale with distance from Mercer. Arrive, unpack the cooler, and you're already on vacation.
co.iron.wi.gov/178/Town-of-MercerHow far can I drive from Mercer on an RV road trip?
Plenty far, and Mercer is a fantastic launch point for a classic Northwoods RV road trip from Mercer. Popular runs include the Porcupine Mountains in Michigan's Upper Peninsula (about 75 miles north), Copper Falls State Park near Mellen (40 miles west), Apostle Islands National Lakeshore at Bayfield (roughly 90 miles northwest), and Lake Superior at Ashland (60 miles north). Hosts set their own mileage policies, with many offering 100 to 150 free miles per night and some advertising RV rental with unlimited mileage. Always confirm the mileage allowance and per-mile overage fee in the listing before booking so you can map your route with total clarity.
travelwisconsin.com/northwest/iron-county/mercerWhere are the best campgrounds near Mercer to park my RV?
You have great options within minutes of downtown Mercer. Loon Lagoon RV Resort and Campground offers full-hookup sites with pull-throughs and ATV-trail access, ideal for full-service convenience. Lake of the Falls County Park (about 5 miles from town) has campsites with electric and water next to the Turtle River waterfall. Sandy Beach Lake Campground in the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest is great for swimming and paddling. For a wilder feel, the Turtle-Flambeau Scenic Waters Area offers boat-in and drive-up sites among hundreds of islands. Book early in summer because these fill fast, especially around Loon Day weekend.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/northernhighlandWhen is the best time to visit Mercer in an RV?
Mercer shines as a true four-season destination, but late June through mid-September is the sweet spot for RV camping Mercer with daytime highs of 70 to 80 degrees F and warm lake water for swimming and paddling. Late September into early October delivers spectacular fall colors across the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage with crisp 50 to 65 degree days, fewer mosquitoes, and lower nightly rates. Winter (December to March) is a snowmobiling and ice-fishing paradise, with snowy temperatures often between 5 and 25 degrees F. Pro tip: time your trip to the first Wednesday in August for Loon Day, Mercer's beloved festival with a loon-calling contest.
weather.gov/dlh/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Mercer?
You'll do great, and Mercer is one of the friendlier places to start. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water systems, and dump procedure so nothing feels mysterious. Roads around Mercer are calm two-lanes with light traffic, US Highway 51 runs straight through town, and you're rarely more than 10 minutes from a pull-off if you want to stretch and reset. First time renting an RV? Choose a Class C motorhome or campervan for easier handling, ask the host to record a quick walkthrough video on your phone, and consider delivery so your first drive is from the campsite, not the highway.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/dmv/drivers/drivers-license/commercial.aspxWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue on the road?
You are never on your own. Every RV rental in Mercer booked through RVezy comes with 24/7 roadside assistance as part of your renter protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. Cell service is generally solid along US Highway 51 and in downtown Mercer, though it can get spotty deep in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, so download offline maps before you head into the backcountry. Your host is also typically a quick call or message away through the RVezy app to troubleshoot anything specific to their rig. The nearest full-service repair and supplies are in Hurley, about 20 miles north.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Mercer RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, road-tripping across state lines is encouraged and easy from Mercer. You're only about 20 minutes from the Michigan border at Ironwood, making the Porcupine Mountains and Lake Superior's south shore a natural extension of your trip. Canadian travel may be allowed depending on the host and the protection package, so message the host directly through your listing before booking if you're planning to cross into Ontario via Sault Ste. Marie (about 5 hours northeast). One firm rule across RVezy: trips into Mexico aren't permitted because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Most Wisconsin and UP routes from Mercer are wide-open and beautifully scenic.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Plan smart and your fuel budget stays comfortable. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A rigs sit around 6 to 10 MPG. Gas in Mercer typically runs slightly above the Wisconsin state average because of its rural Iron County location, so top off in Hayward, Minocqua, or Hurley where prices and station options are usually better. Mercer has gas stations right on US Highway 51 for quick fills, but no truck-stop-sized diesel pumps in town. Pro tip: download the GasBuddy app and avoid driving above 60 MPH on Highway 51, which can boost your MPG meaningfully.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Mercer?
Book early and you'll get the lakefront site you actually want. Wisconsin State Park campsites at Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest open for reservations 11 months in advance through the Wisconsin DNR's reservation system at wisconsinstateparks.reserveamerica.com, and summer weekends in July and August often fill within days. Iron County parks like Lake of the Falls book directly through the county and tend to have more last-minute availability midweek. Private parks like Loon Lagoon take direct reservations on their website and through phone, often 3 to 6 months out for peak summer. For Loon Day weekend in early August, book at least 4 months ahead.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/reservationsWhat are local driving conditions like around Mercer?
Driving around Mercer is refreshingly mellow, which makes it a great spot for first-timers. US Highway 51, State Highway 47, and State Highway 182 are the main routes, all well-maintained two-lane roads with wide shoulders and very light traffic outside summer weekends. The big things to watch for: white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk (especially in November), logging trucks on county roads, and seasonal frost heaves in spring. Winter brings snow and ice from late November through March, so if you're booking a motorhome rental Mercer trip in the cold months, choose a host with snow tires and check the Wisconsin 511 travel system before departing.
511wi.gov/What amenities will I find at Mercer-area campgrounds?
Mercer-area campgrounds are well set up for a comfortable RV camping experience. Loon Lagoon offers full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric), Wi-Fi, showers, and a dump station. Lake of the Falls County Park has electric and water hookups, vault and flush toilets, showers, a boat launch, and a swimming beach. Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest campgrounds typically provide electric sites, potable water spigots, dump stations, and pit toilets. For free dump stations and freshwater fills between trips, the Wisconsin DNR sites and most private parks in Iron County offer day-use access for a small fee, even if you're not camping there overnight.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/name/northernhighlandWhat's actually inside a typical Mercer RV rental?
More than you'd expect, and exactly what you need for the Northwoods. Most rentals in Mercer come fully equipped with a queen or king bed plus convertible dinette and bunks, a full kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, a wet bath or full bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with furnace and air conditioning, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, and an onboard generator for off-grid camping at the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage. Wi-Fi isn't standard since rural Iron County cell signal is spotty, so plan to use your phone hotspot. Check each listing's amenity list to confirm exactly what's included.
travelwisconsin.com/northwest/iron-county/mercerWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about for my Mercer rental?
Hosts offer thoughtful add-ons that make your trip easier. Popular extras include bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, fishing rod holders, kayak or paddleboard rentals, generator hours, and propane top-offs. Pickup is usually at the host's home address near Mercer, Manitowish Waters, or Hurley, with a 60 to 90 minute walkthrough so you know every system. Delivery to Lake of the Falls, Loon Lagoon, or your private cabin is widely available for a flat or per-mile fee. Confirm mileage allowance (often 100 to 150 free miles per night, with a clear per-mile overage rate) and generator hours in the listing.
co.iron.wi.gov/178/Town-of-MercerHow does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Mercer?
Payment is simple and secure through the RVezy platform: you pay the rental total when you book, and your card information stays protected (you never hand cash to the host). A refundable security deposit, set by the host and typically ranging from $500 to $1,500, is pre-authorized on your card before the trip begins (not actually charged unless there is an issue). To avoid any deposit hassles on your campervan rental Mercer trip, take dated photos and a quick video of the RV inside and out at pickup and return, refill propane and fuel to the agreed level, and dump the tanks before drop-off. Most renters get their deposit released within a few days of return.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Mercer during the winter for snowmobiling or ice fishing?
Yes, and a winter cheap RV rental Mercer trip is one of the most unique ways to experience the Northwoods. Mercer is a snowmobiling hub with direct trail access to over 500 miles of groomed routes through Iron County, plus 214 nearby lakes for ice fishing. Look for hosts who list four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, a working furnace, and shore-power-only setups since many campgrounds shut off water December through April. Pair your RV with a stay at a winterized site that offers 30/50-amp electric. Pro tip: ask your host about skirt panels and a heated water hose for extra cold-weather peace of mind.
