Campgrounds and RV parks near New Holstein, WI

Motorsports drive a lot of the region's summer traffic. Road America in Elkhart Lake is a permanent road-racing circuit that hosts IndyCar, NASCAR Xfinity, MotoAmerica, IMSA, and vintage weekends through the warm months. Elkhart Lake's Road America offers trackside camping for RVs and tents when events are scheduled. Outside the track, the Kettle Moraine State Forest Northern Unit covers about 30,000 acres of glacial terrain, with hiking on the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, three swim beaches at Mauthe Lake and Long Lake, and paddling on quiet kettle lakes. The Greenbush and Butler Lake loops draw hikers and mountain bikers. Families staying at Plymouth Rock Camping Resort or Fond du Lac East/Kettle Moraine KOA typically pair pool and playground days with day trips to Lake Winnebago, the EAA museum in Oshkosh, and Sheboygan's Lake Michigan waterfront.

The camping season in this part of Wisconsin runs roughly from the first weekend in May through mid- to late October. Kettle Moraine Northern Unit campgrounds follow that pattern: Long Lake Campground opens the first weekend in May and runs through mid-October, and the New Prospect Horseriders' Campground opens the first weekend in May and closes the last weekend in October. Mauthe Lake Campground stays open year-round, though services are limited in the cold months. Private resorts often open a few weeks earlier and stay open a bit later, but water systems shut down once hard freezes arrive. Summer is peak. June through August brings the warmest weather, the busiest lakes, and the majority of Road America's marquee race weekends, so sites near Elkhart Lake sell out well ahead. Late September and October deliver cooler nights, thinner crowds, and fall color across the moraine. Winter camping is limited. Most family campgrounds are closed, though Mauthe Lake and backpack shelters along the Ice Age Trail remain accessible for rustic stays.

Kettle Moraine Northern Unit campgrounds vary in hookups. Mauthe Lake has 135 sites, including 51 with electric service, a shower building with flush toilets in the 300 loop, and vault toilets elsewhere. Long Lake has about 200 sites without electric hookups but offers flush toilets, showers, and a sanitary dump station. Neither offers full hookups, so plan on using the dump station on arrival or departure. Check-in is not required at state forest campgrounds; campers proceed directly to the reserved site. Only certified firewood or wood sourced within 10 miles is permitted, and the forest is closed to non-campers from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Private resorts near New Holstein generally offer 30/50-amp service, water, sewer, Wi-Fi, pools, and playgrounds. Expect gravel or grass pads, small-town grocery runs into Plymouth or Fond du Lac, and cell coverage that is reliable near the highways but patchy inside the forest.
