Campgrounds near New Lisbon, Wisconsin
New Lisbon sits in Juneau County in central Wisconsin, within easy reach of the Castle Rock Flowage, the Wisconsin River, and the sandstone bluff country of the Driftless region. The area serves as a practical base for RV travelers heading to Wisconsin Dells, Tomah, or the Elroy-Sparta State Trail, with Interstate 90/94 running directly past several of the closest campgrounds.
Options range from full-service private resorts to rustic state park sites. Buckhorn Campground Resort sits within the Buckhorn state park forest and describes itself as a quiet, wooded, family-friendly campground. Nearby, Buckhorn State Park operates along Castle Rock Lake in central Wisconsin, and Summer Hideaway RV Campground Resort LLC offers additional private-park amenities.
For travelers moving along the interstate, Oakdale KOA Journey provides an easy pull-off, and Mill Bluff State Park anchors the western side of the area with its distinctive sandstone formations. Together these five properties cover the main styles of camping a family or RV renter is likely to want in the region.
Things to do near New Lisbon
Water dominates the recreation calendar. Buckhorn State Park is a destination for water enthusiasts, hunters, hikers, campers, and nature lovers, and the park and two adjacent state wildlife areas cover more than 8,000 acres on a peninsula in the Castle Rock Flowage of the Wisconsin River. Swimming, kayaking, canoeing, and fishing are all on offer, along with a designated swimming area on the lake.
Mill Bluff State Park protects several prominent sandstone bluffs 80 to 200 feet high that formed as sea stacks in Glacial Lake Wisconsin, and the bluffs served as landmarks to both early pioneers and travelers today on Interstate 90/94, which passes through the park. A stone stairway of 223 steps climbs Mill Bluff itself, and a spring-fed swimming pond sits south of the campground.
Biking on the Elroy-Sparta State Trail and cranberry country attractions near Warrens round out the options.

Camping seasons in central Wisconsin are tightly tied to weather. Mill Bluff State Park has a rustic family campground with 21 campsites, and the campground is open from late May through September while day use stays open year-round. Buckhorn State Park keeps camping areas open across a longer season, with some sites accessible in winter as staffing allows.
Summer weekends are the peak. Sites at popular state parks book out months ahead for the Fourth of July and Labor Day, and biting insects can be heavy in mid to late summer, especially around wetlands and the flowage. Fall visits are worth considering to avoid peak insect pressure while enjoying cooler temperatures and changing foliage.
Spring brings variable weather and mud on unpaved sites, while shoulder-season travelers should check property notices for construction, boat-launch closures, and reduced services before arrival.

How to book a site near New Lisbon
State park campgrounds in the New Lisbon area, including Buckhorn State Park and Mill Bluff State Park, use the Wisconsin DNR reservation system. Camping reservations are required and can be made up to 11 months in advance of the planned date of occupancy, campers must make a reservation before setting up on any site, and reservations can be made online or by calling 1-888-947-2757. A minimum three-night reservation is required on holiday weekends, and advance family-site reservations booked before May 15 for stays between May 15 and October 31 require a minimum two-night stay.
Any motor vehicles brought into a state park property require a vehicle admission pass, which can be purchased at the property or in advance.
Private campgrounds handle their own bookings. Oakdale KOA Journey, Buckhorn Campground Resort, and Summer Hideaway RV Campground Resort LLC accept reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, each with its own deposit and cancellation policies.
What to expect on arrival
Facilities vary widely by property. Private resorts like Oakdale KOA Journey offer full hookups, showers, laundry, and family amenities, with sites that accommodate large rigs and a location right off I-90/94. Buckhorn Campground Resort advertises large wooded sites within the surrounding state park forest.
State park camping is more rustic. At Mill Bluff, six of the 21 sites have electrical hookups, sites 7 and 10 through 21 are very flat and accessible, and the park has vault toilets and hand pumps but no showers. Firewood is sold at the park in season, and campers are asked not to move firewood into the park from outside a 10-mile radius.
Cell coverage is generally reliable near the interstate but can drop off along the flowage and wooded backroads.

You are covered from the moment you hit the road. You choose the protection level that fits your trip at checkout (the plan is not set by the host), and it covers most physical damage to the RV during your rental. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my New Lisbon RV trip?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets a clear, standardized cancellation policy on every reservation (hosts do not choose this), and you will see your full cancellation details at checkout and inside your RVezy dashboard. Refund eligibility depends on how far out you are from your trip start date, so the earlier you cancel, the better your refund. If a host cancels on you, RVezy helps you rebook or issues a refund or travel credit. Pro tip: secure your summer Dells-area dates early since prime weekends near New Lisbon book out months in advance.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a New Lisbon RV trip?
Absolutely, and there are plenty of pet-friendly RV rental options in New Lisbon to choose from. On RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to see hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) for a small cleaning fee. Once you've got your rig, your pup will love sniffing the trails at Buckhorn State Park, splashing in Castle Rock Lake, or strolling Riverside Park along the Lemonweir River right in town. The 43,000-acre Necedah National Wildlife Refuge, 20 minutes northwest, allows leashed dogs on most trails. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any breed or size preferences so check-in is smooth.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/petsinparksCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near New Lisbon?
Yes, RV delivery in New Lisbon is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers nervous about towing or driving a big rig. Many local hosts will deliver, level, and set up your motorhome or travel trailer right at your reserved site at Riverside Park & Campground, Buckhorn State Park, Mr. K's Lazy K Campground, or even a private property within Juneau County. They'll walk you through the awning, slide-outs, water hookups, and propane during a full orientation. Delivery fees are set per mile by each host. Pro tip: filter by Delivery on RVezy and add your campground address to compare quotes instantly.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/buckhornHow far can I travel from New Lisbon on an RV road trip?
You're parked in one of the best basecamps in the Midwest. From New Lisbon, popular RV road trip routes include Wisconsin Dells (25 miles south), Devil's Lake State Park near Baraboo (55 miles southeast), La Crosse and the Mississippi River bluffs (70 miles west), Door County (220 miles northeast), and Minneapolis-St. Paul (200 miles northwest). Each RVezy host sets their own mileage policy, with many offering generous daily allowances and some listings featuring RV rental with unlimited mileage for true open-road freedom. Pro tip: filter by Unlimited Mileage if you're planning a big loop through the Driftless Area and want zero overage worries.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/devilslakeWhere are the best campgrounds near New Lisbon for RV camping?
You've got fantastic options for RV camping in New Lisbon and the surrounding Juneau County. Riverside Park & Campground, run by the city right along the Lemonweir River, offers 50 spacious sites with electric hookups and a dump station within walking distance of downtown. Buckhorn State Park, 20 miles northeast on Castle Rock Lake, has 65 family campsites with showers and a sandy swim beach. Mr. K's Lazy K Campground sits just off I-94 for easy pull-throughs. For Dells-area waterpark access, Wisconsin Dells KOA Holiday is a 25-minute drive south. Pro tip: reserve state park sites 11 months ahead through the Wisconsin DNR reservation system.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/buckhorn/campingWhen is the best time to visit New Lisbon in an RV?
Late May through early October is prime season for an RV trip in New Lisbon, with summer highs in the upper 70s to mid 80s Fahrenheit and warm river-friendly evenings. June and early September are the sweet spot: bug pressure is lower, Castle Rock Lake is swimmable, and Dells crowds thin out. Fall foliage peaks in early to mid October across the Driftless bluffs and is stunning along Highway 80. Winters here drop into the teens and single digits with heavy snow, so RV rental in Wisconsin during December through February is limited to winterized rigs. Pro tip: book the week after Labor Day for warm days, cool nights, and big shoulder-season savings.
weather.gov/arx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I actually be okay driving it around New Lisbon?
Yes, and first-time renting an RV in New Lisbon is genuinely one of the easier introductions you can pick. The roads around town are flat, lightly trafficked, and well-signed, with wide shoulders along Highway 12/16 and easy I-90/I-94 on-ramps. Your RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering propane, water, slide-outs, mirrors, and backing up, so you leave feeling confident, not confused. Many hosts also offer delivery so you can skip driving altogether and just enjoy your campsite. Pro tip: take your first practice drive on County Road A toward Necedah Wildlife Refuge to get a feel for the rig before heading to busier Dells routes.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/safety/education/driver-edu/default.aspxWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so whether you have a flat tire on Highway 80, a dead battery at Buckhorn State Park, or need a tow from a remote spot near Necedah, one phone call gets help dispatched. Your host is also typically a quick text away for questions like how the water heater switches over to propane, and RVezy customer support is reachable before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV VIN and license plate at pickup so any roadside call goes faster.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my New Lisbon RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, most RVezy rentals from New Lisbon are great for multi-state road trips. Popular routes include heading north to Minnesota's North Shore, east to Chicago and Lake Michigan, or west to the Mississippi River and Iowa's Effigy Mounds. Each host sets their own travel area on the listing, so check the map or message the host before booking to confirm your route. Cross-border travel into Canada is allowed by some hosts (confirm in writing since coverage can differ), and travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Pro tip: a 4-day loop from New Lisbon through Minneapolis and back is roughly 500 miles and totally doable.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a New Lisbon RV trip?
Fuel is easier to predict than you'd think. Class C motorhomes around New Lisbon average 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans get 16 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 MPG combined). Wisconsin gas prices typically track near the national average, and you'll find easy fuel stops at the Kwik Trip and Pilot near the I-90/Highway 80 interchange. For a 4-day, 400-mile loop from New Lisbon to the Dells, Devil's Lake, and back, plan on roughly $120 to $180 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in New Lisbon, not in Wisconsin Dells, where prices spike with tourist traffic.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near New Lisbon?
For the best campgrounds near New Lisbon, book early and you'll thank yourself. Wisconsin DNR opens state park reservations (Buckhorn, Mill Bluff, Mirror Lake) exactly 11 months in advance through their official reservation system, and prime summer weekends often fill within hours of release. City-run Riverside Park & Campground takes phone and walk-in reservations and is easier to grab last-minute on weekdays. Private parks around the Dells like Wisconsin Dells KOA and Yogi Bear's Jellystone book up 3 to 6 months ahead for July and August. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for the 11-month-out date if you're targeting a Buckhorn lakefront site for the Fourth of July.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around New Lisbon?
Driving conditions around New Lisbon are about as RV-friendly as Wisconsin gets. I-90/I-94 runs right through town with wide lanes, gentle grades, and clearly marked rest areas, and the local highways (12, 16, 80, 82) are flat-to-gently-rolling through the Driftless farmland. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk year-round, especially on County Road A and rural stretches near Necedah Refuge. In summer, occasional thunderstorms can bring strong crosswinds, so check the National Weather Service La Crosse forecast before long drives. Winter brings snow and ice from November through March. Pro tip: avoid the Dells strip (Highway 12) on Saturday afternoons in July when traffic crawls and pull-offs are scarce.
511wi.gov/What hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near New Lisbon?
You'll find everything you need close to town. Riverside Park & Campground in New Lisbon offers electric hookups, potable water fill, a dump station, hot showers, and flush restrooms. Buckhorn State Park has electric sites (no sewer at the site, but a centralized dump and water fill near the entrance). Private parks like Wisconsin Dells KOA and Mr. K's Lazy K offer full hookups (water, electric, 30/50 amp, sewer), WiFi, laundry, and propane refills. For free dump stations between trips, the Kwik Trip near Mauston and the Pilot at I-90 Exit 69 both have RV-friendly facilities. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving your campground since rural fill stations can be spaced out.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/buckhorn/campingWhat's inside the RV? Beds, kitchen, bathroom, WiFi?
You'll be comfortable from day one. Most RV rentals in New Lisbon on RVezy come fully equipped with real beds (queen master in motorhomes, plus convertible dinettes and bunks sleeping 4 to 8), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, and a private bathroom with toilet and shower. Class A and Class C motorhomes have seatbelts for everyone traveling while driving, plus a generator for off-grid power and rooftop air conditioning. WiFi varies by host (Verizon 5G works well around New Lisbon), and many rigs include a TV, outdoor speakers, and an awning. Pro tip: check the listing's amenities list and message the host to confirm linens, bedding, and kitchen kits are included.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/rv-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I look for when booking?
You can customize your New Lisbon RV trip with the add-ons that matter most to you. Popular host extras include delivery and setup (often $2 to $4 per mile), generator hours, propane refills, bedding and towel packages, camp chairs, bike racks, kayak racks, and even fully stocked kitchen kits. Pickup is typically at the host's address in or near New Lisbon, Mauston, or Wisconsin Dells, with most hosts offering flexible afternoon pickup and morning return windows. Mileage policies vary by listing, with daily allowances commonly between 100 and 200 miles and some listings offering RV rental with unlimited mileage. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a bedding kit if you're flying into Madison or La Crosse to skip the gear haul.
travelwisconsin.com/central/juneau-county/new-lisbonHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in New Lisbon through RVezy, you pay the rental total (nightly rate, fees, taxes, and any add-ons) through the platform using a credit or debit card, never directly to the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately on your card before pickup (the amount is shown on the listing and varies by RV type) and is released back to you after return, assuming no damage or extra cleaning is needed. Pro tip: do a thorough walkaround video at pickup and dropoff so any pre-existing dings are documented and your deposit comes back fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs RV camping near New Lisbon good for families?
It's hard to beat for a family RV trip in New Lisbon. You're 25 minutes from Wisconsin Dells (the self-proclaimed Waterpark Capital of the World), 20 minutes from Castle Rock Lake's sandy swim beach at Buckhorn State Park, and within an hour of Mill Bluff State Park's easy kid-friendly hikes up sandstone bluffs. In town, Riverside Park has a playground, band shell, and shallow Lemonweir River access perfect for tubing or wading. Most RVezy motorhomes near New Lisbon sleep 6 to 8 with bunks and convertible dinettes, making nights cozy after big days. Pro tip: pack a Wisconsin State Park sticker (annual or daily) once you arrive to save on multi-park visits during your trip.
