Camping near Rib Lake, Wisconsin
Rib Lake sits in Taylor County in north-central Wisconsin, surrounded by the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest and a chain of glacial lakes. The village of about 900 residents anchors a rural stretch of forest, trout streams, and the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, which passes directly through town. RV renters use Rib Lake as a base for paddling, fishing, and forest recreation without the crowds of Wisconsin's better-known lake regions.
Campgrounds within a reasonable drive range from state park sites to smaller resort-style operations on private lakes. Spirit Falls Camping and Willow's End Resort & Campground offer lake and river access close to town, while Council Grounds State Park near Merrill provides developed sites along the Wisconsin River. SARA Park Campground and Brumley's Resort round out the mix with family-oriented amenities.
Most sites accommodate travel trailers and mid-size Class C rigs. Larger Class A RVs should confirm site length and road access before booking, since forest roads and older resort loops can be tight.
Things to do around Rib Lake
The Ice Age Trail runs directly through Rib Lake, offering day hikes across kettle moraines and hardwood ridges. Rib Lake itself supports walleye, bass, and panfish, and public boat launches make it easy to drop a kayak or fishing boat. The paved Rib Lake segment of the Pine Line Trail follows a former rail corridor and works well for family bike rides.
Council Grounds State Park adds a swimming beach, walking trails, and paddling on Lake Alexander and the Wisconsin River. The surrounding Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest offers additional hiking, ATV routes, and forest drives.
In town, travelers find a small grocery, hardware store, and seasonal ice cream stand, plus a public boat landing and beach on the lake.

The camping season in this part of northern Wisconsin runs primarily from May through mid-October. Council Grounds State Park operates its family campground through the warm months, with limited winter recreation for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing once water systems shut down in fall. Private resorts like Brumley's Resort and Willow's End Resort & Campground typically follow a similar warm-weather schedule.
July and August draw the largest crowds and warmest water for swimming. Weekends around the Fourth of July and Labor Day book out earliest, and mosquitoes and biting flies peak in June. Late August through September brings cooler nights, fewer bugs, and easier reservations.
Winter transforms the area into a snowmobile and cross-country ski destination. RV camping is not practical from December through March due to sub-zero temperatures and unplowed campground roads, though nearby towns offer indoor lodging for winter trail users.
How to book campsites near Rib Lake
Council Grounds State Park uses the Wisconsin State Park System reservation platform at wisconsin.goingtocamp.com. Sites become available up to 11 months in advance of the planned arrival date, and a Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission pass is required for every vehicle in addition to the campsite fee. Popular summer weekends often fill within days of the window opening.
Private campgrounds including Spirit Falls Camping, SARA Park Campground, Brumley's Resort, and Willow's End Resort & Campground handle reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Booking two to three months ahead is recommended for July and August stays.
Renters should confirm rig length, hookup type, and pet policies at time of booking, since these vary widely between state and private sites.
What to expect on-site
Council Grounds State Park offers a mix of modern and rustic sites, including options with electricity, plus modern restrooms, showers, and blacktop campground roads suitable for most travel trailers. Cell coverage in the park is limited but usable near the entrance.
Private lakeside campgrounds in the Rib Lake area tend to feature grass or gravel pads, full or partial hookups on many sites, and shared amenities such as swim beaches, docks, and boat rentals. Some loops sit under mature pines with limited satellite reception.
Bring bug spray, drinking water for remote stops, and a Wisconsin fishing license if planning to fish. Firewood must be purchased locally or certified to prevent spread of invasive pests, and quiet hours are enforced at most state and private sites.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Rib Lake, WI
How much does an RV rental in Rib Lake, WI typically cost?
RV rental in Rib Lake, WI is genuinely affordable compared to big-city pickup points, which makes the Northwoods one of Wisconsin's best-value RV destinations. On RVezy, expect travel trailers from about $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes from roughly $175 to $295 per night, and Class B campervans around $150 to $250. Hosts set their own pricing, mileage policies, and add-ons, so weeknight and shoulder-season bookings (late May or September) usually shave 15 to 25 percent off summer rates. Pro tip: book a travel trailer with delivery to Lakeview Park and skip the tow-vehicle hassle. That's how a cheap RV rental Rib Lake trip becomes a relaxed lake weekend.
travelwisconsin.com/campgrounds/lakeview-park-195123What do I need to rent an RV in Rib Lake, Wisconsin?
Good news, the requirements to rent an RV in Rib Lake are refreshingly simple. You'll need to be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and that's it. Wisconsin does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for the motorhomes, travel trailers, and campervans listed on RVezy. Identity verification happens right inside the platform during booking, so there are no paper forms or in-person visits. International visitors should bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside their home license. Once you're verified, you're cleared to roll out to Timm's Hill, Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, or wherever your Wisconsin adventure leads.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/dmv/license-drvs/how-to-apply/lic-classes.aspxWhat protection comes with my RVezy booking in Rib Lake?
Every RV rental in Rib Lake booked through RVezy automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered from the moment you pull out of the driveway. During checkout you (not the host) choose between several protection tiers, letting you match coverage to your comfort level and budget for backroad drives along Highway 102 or County Road C. Each tier covers physical damage to the RV with different deductibles and limits, giving real financial peace of mind on your Northwoods trip. Pick your tier, hit confirm, and focus on enjoying the Ice Age Trail and Timm's Hill knowing the basics are handled.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my plans change, can I cancel my Rib Lake RV rental?
Yes, booking an RV rental in Rib Lake is low-risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy across the platform, not individual hosts. That means consistent, transparent rules whether you are renting a campervan from Medford or a fifth wheel from Wausau headed to Rib Lake. You will see the exact cancellation terms that apply to your booking during checkout and again in your confirmation, including the grace period right after booking and the refund tiers tied to how far ahead you cancel. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy helps you rebook or provides a refund. Book with confidence and lock in those prime summer weekends on Rib Lake.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Rib Lake RV trip?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Rib Lake is one of the easiest ways to bring the whole family, fur included. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see hosts who welcome dogs, then message them to confirm any size or breed preferences. Once you are up here, leashed dogs are welcome on the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, the Timm's Hill National Trail, and the 26-mile Pine Line rail-to-trail corridor between Medford and Prentice. Many area campgrounds, including options along State Highway 102, allow leashed dogs at sites. Pack a long lead, plenty of water, and tick prevention for the hardwood forest.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/petsinparksCan the RV be delivered right to my Rib Lake campsite?
Yes, RV delivery in Rib Lake is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather skip towing or driving a large rig down County Road C. Many hosts will deliver, level, and hook up the RV right at Lakeview Park in the village, a private lake cabin driveway, or a nearby campground along Highway 102. They will also run a full orientation so you know how the propane, water pump, and slide-outs work before they leave. Delivery fees are set by each host and typically scale with distance from their home base in places like Medford, Wausau, or Eau Claire. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see who serves your exact spot.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Rib%20Lake%2C%20WisconsinHow far can I drive from Rib Lake on an RV trip?
Plenty far, and the surrounding Northwoods makes for an incredible RV road trip from Rib Lake. Timm's Hill County Park, Wisconsin's highest natural point at 1,951 feet, is about 15 minutes north via County Road C. The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest and Mondeaux Dam Recreation Area are roughly 30 minutes west, Wausau is about 65 miles southeast (around 90 minutes), and Wisconsin Dells is roughly 3 hours south. Apostle Islands National Lakeshore on Lake Superior is about a 3-hour drive north. Mileage policies are set by each host, so look for listings advertising RV rental with unlimited mileage if you are planning multiple stops.
fs.usda.gov/cnnfWhat are the best campgrounds near Rib Lake for an RV?
You are spoiled for choice on the best campgrounds near Rib Lake. Lakeview Park, right in the village on Rib Lake, offers RV sites with water and electric, showers, a boat landing, and lake access just steps away. Wood Lake Campground in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, off Highway 102, has wooded sites with vault toilets and access to the Ice Age Trail. Spirit Lake Campground along State Highway 102 has sites with electric and water and a dump station. For a Forest Service option, Chippewa Campground in the Chequamegon-Nicolet welcomes larger RVs and is reservable through Recreation.gov. Reserve summer weekends a few weeks ahead and you are set.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2725When is the best time to plan an RV camping Rib Lake trip?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Rib Lake is mid-May through early October, when daytime highs typically climb into the 70s and low 80s Fahrenheit and the hardwood forests come alive. July and August are peak season with warm lake swimming and clear nights perfect for stargazing under Northwoods dark skies. Late September into early October is the local insider favorite: cool 50 to 65 degree days, fewer mosquitoes, and brilliant sugar maple color along Rustic Road 1. Winters routinely drop below freezing with heavy lake-effect-influenced snowfall, but a few hardy hosts offer winterized rigs for ice fishing and access to the Rib Lake Ski and Snowshoe Club's groomed trails.
weather.gov/grb/I have never driven an RV before, will I be okay around Rib Lake?
You will be totally fine, and first time renting an RV in Rib Lake is actually a great place to learn. Roads here are quiet, mostly straight, and well-paved: State Highway 102, County Road C, and Highway 13 see light traffic compared to anywhere downstate. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering brakes, mirrors, propane, slide-outs, and dumping, and you can text them anytime during your trip. If you would rather not drive a big rig at all, book delivery and the RV arrives set up at Lakeview Park or your cabin driveway. Pro tip: practice one slow loop around an open lot before heading out.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue in the Northwoods?
You are covered. 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking, which is reassuring in a rural area like Taylor County where the nearest large service center can be a drive. One phone call dispatches help for flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, or towing, whether you are parked at a Forest Service campground or boondocking on a national forest road. Your host is also a quick text away for quirks specific to their RV, like how the generator starts or where the spare fuses live. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Save both numbers in your phone before you leave Medford or Wausau.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Rib Lake rental on a longer road trip across Wisconsin or to Michigan?
Yes, interstate travel within the United States is generally welcomed on RVezy rentals, so a motorhome rental in Rib Lake makes a great launchpad for a multi-state Midwest loop. Popular routes include heading northeast into Michigan's Upper Peninsula for Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, north to Apostle Islands National Lakeshore on Lake Superior, or south through Wisconsin Dells and Madison. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Cross-border Canadian trips depend on the specific host and listing, so message the host before booking to confirm. Always review the listing's mileage policy too, since longer trips pair best with unlimited or high daily allowances.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Rib Lake RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier line items to plan because Wisconsin gas prices typically run a bit below the national average. Class B campervans get around 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes about 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A coaches 6 to 10 MPG. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle but expect a 20 to 30 percent fuel hit when towing. For a typical 4-day Rib Lake loop covering 300 to 400 miles, budget roughly $100 to $200 for a Class C. Fill up in Medford or Phillips before heading deeper into the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, where stations get sparse.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I reserve a campground near Rib Lake?
You have more flexibility here than at the big national parks, but planning still pays off. Lakeview Park in the village fills up for July and August weekends, so book several weeks ahead through the Village of Rib Lake. Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest campgrounds like Chippewa and Sailor Lake open reservations 6 months in advance through Recreation.gov, and prime summer Saturdays at nearby Council Grounds State Park can book up quickly after opening. Many smaller Forest Service sites are first-come, first-served, so arrive Thursday or early Friday for the best shot. Mid-week stays almost always have availability, even in July.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2725What are driving conditions like around Rib Lake?
Driving around Rib Lake is genuinely relaxing: two-lane highways, light traffic, and gentle rolling terrain through the glacial Northwoods. State Highway 102, County Road C, and Highway 13 are well-maintained and easy for any RV, including longer fifth wheels and Class A rigs. Watch for white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk year-round, especially during the November rut. Spring can bring frost heaves, while winter (roughly December through March) means snow-covered roads where winter tires are strongly recommended. Avoid the narrowest Forest Service roads in the Chequamegon-Nicolet with very large rigs. Local tip: Rustic Road 1 north of town is a stunning scenic drive, just take the tight curves slowly.
511wi.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Rib Lake?
Northwoods campgrounds range from full-service to delightfully rustic, and you can pick your comfort level. Lakeview Park in Rib Lake village offers RV sites with water and 20/30/50-amp electric, flush toilets, hot showers, and a dump station. Spirit Lake Campground adds electric and water hookups, a dump station, firewood, and lake piers. Forest Service campgrounds like Chippewa offer drinking water and vault toilets but limited or no hookups, so plan to dump at the end of your stay. For potable water and dump stations between stops, Medford and Phillips both have public options. Cell service is solid in town but spotty deep in the national forest.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/cnnf/recreation/camping-cabinsWhat is inside a typical RV rental in the Rib Lake area?
You will be impressed by how livable today's RVs are. Most listings near Rib Lake sleep 4 to 8 with a queen bed, convertible dinette, and bunk options. Standard equipment includes a full kitchen (3-burner stove, fridge/freezer, microwave), wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, furnace, roof air conditioner, and seatbelted travel seats. Many Class C motorhomes and travel trailers also include a TV, outdoor speakers, awning, and a built-in generator or solar setup for boondocking on Forest Service land. Wi-Fi is hit or miss in the Northwoods, so download entertainment in advance and bring a paper map of the Ice Age Trail. Each RVezy listing shows the exact amenities upfront.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Rib%20Lake%2C%20WisconsinWhat add-ons and options can I get with a Rib Lake RV rental?
Hosts love making your trip turnkey, so most listings offer optional add-ons priced individually: linens and bedding packs, kitchen kits, camp chairs and tables, fire-starter bundles, bikes, kayaks, generators, and pet packages. Pickup and dropoff at the host's location is standard, and delivery and setup to Lakeview Park, a local campground along Highway 102, or a private property is available from many Rib Lake-area hosts (the fee usually scales with distance). Mileage policies vary: common allowances are 100 to 150 free miles per night with extra miles charged per mile, while some hosts offer unlimited mileage packages. Filter on RVezy by Instant Book to lock in popular summer weekends in a single click.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Rib%20Lake%2C%20WisconsinHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment for your RV rental in Rib Lake is handled fully through the RVezy platform, with no cash or off-platform transfers to the host. You will pay the rental total at checkout, and the host's security deposit is placed as a separate temporary hold on your card before the trip and released after a smooth return. Deposit amounts are set by each host and shown on the listing before you book. To keep things easy, take date-stamped photos of the interior, exterior, and fuel and propane levels at both pickup and dropoff, follow the host's dumping and cleaning expectations, and report any new dings right away. Clean returns typically mean fast deposit releases.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre winter RV rentals available around Rib Lake?
Yes, and a winter campervan rental in Rib Lake is a genuine Northwoods adventure if you embrace it. Select hosts offer four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and propane furnaces built to handle January lows in the single digits and teens. Lakeview Park typically closes for the season, but you can park at private properties with shore power or set up for ice fishing on Rib Lake for walleye, northern pike, and panfish. The Rib Lake Ski and Snowshoe Club grooms cross-country ski and snowshoe trails through the winter season, including the historic Friendship Bridge. Filter RVezy for winter-ready listings and message the host to confirm cold-weather readiness.
