Camping near Ridgeway, Wisconsin
Ridgeway sits in the Driftless Area of southwestern Wisconsin, an unglaciated region of steep hills, bluffs, and river valleys along US Highway 18/151 between Madison and Dodgeville. RV travelers use the village as a base for a cluster of state parks within a short drive, plus a private riverfront resort on the Wisconsin River.
The closest major campground is Twin Valley - Governor Dodge State Park, part of a 5,270-acre park in the Driftless Area named after the first governor of the Wisconsin Territory, with two lakes and a waterfall. Blue Mound State Park sits on the highest point in southern Wisconsin and connects directly to the Military Ridge State Trail, which runs through Ridgeway itself. Tower Hill State Park and Wisconsin Riverside Resort, Inc. lie north near Spring Green on the Wisconsin River, and Yellowstone Lake State Park is a short drive south.
Most sites in the area are wooded, and the state parks handle everything from tent pads to electric RV sites, backpack sites, and equestrian camping.
Things to do around Ridgeway
The Military Ridge State Trail passes through Ridgeway, a rail-trail popular for cycling that connects to Blue Mound State Park with bike-in campsites. Governor Dodge offers swimming beaches on Cox Hollow and Twin Valley lakes, boating with electric motors only, fishing, and swimming areas at each lake, plus 22 miles of equestrian trails including the interior horse trail system and the 15-mile Driftless Horse Trail.
Blue Mound has a summer swimming pool, the only one in a Wisconsin state park, along with a splash pad, two observation towers, and mountain-bike trails. Tower Hill State Park lets visitors see how lead shot was made in the mid-1800s, hike bluff trails, and reach the Wisconsin River via a canoe landing. Nearby attractions include the Cave of the Mounds, House on the Rock in Dodgeville, and the American Players Theater across the river from Tower Hill.

Peak season runs Memorial Day through Labor Day, when beaches, pools, boat rentals, and concession stands are all open. Summer weekends fill quickly at Governor Dodge and Blue Mound, so RV sites with electric hookups often need to be booked months ahead. At Yellowstone Lake, vault toilets and drinking water are available year-round, while the dumping station, flush toilets, and showers are seasonal.
Spring and fall are cooler and less crowded, and fall color through the Driftless bluffs is a major draw for weekend campers. Tower Hill is a seasonal park open from mid-May through Columbus Day weekend each year, and its small tent-only campground suits smaller rigs rather than large RVs.
Winter camping is possible at Governor Dodge, where more than 30 campsites in the Twin Valley campground are available for winter campers, with a few sites plowed. Blue Mound campground is open year-round. Snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and ice fishing take over once the summer season closes.
How to book a campsite
Wisconsin state park sites are reserved through the Wisconsin DNR reservation system online or by phone. Camping reservations are required and can be made up to 11 months in advance of your planned date of occupancy, either online or by calling 1-888-947-2757. This applies to Governor Dodge, Blue Mound, Tower Hill, and Yellowstone Lake.
Any motor vehicles brought into the property require a vehicle admission pass, which can be purchased at the property or in advance, and both daily and annual passes are available.
Wisconsin Riverside Resort, Inc. is a private operator and books directly through the resort rather than through the state system. Campers should contact the resort for current reservation, deposit, and cancellation terms.
What to expect on-site
Governor Dodge has 269 standard campsites in Twin Valley and Cox Hollow campgrounds, with electrical hookups at 80 sites, plus group, equestrian, and backpack sites, and showers in the Twin Valley and Cox Hollow restroom buildings and trailer dumping stations at both campgrounds. Blue Mound offers 78 wooded sites, 12 bike/hike-in sites, and a rustic accessible cabin for people with disabilities, with a modern flush toilet and shower building in the campground. Yellowstone Lake has 128 individual campsites with 38 electrical hookups.
Tower Hill has 10 tent campsites and the campground is open seasonally, with vault toilets and no electric. Mosquitoes are notorious in the warm months near the river, so bring repellent.

The state only requires a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for motorhomes longer than 45 feet, and virtually every RV on RVezy falls well under that. You'll need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID right through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Yes, every RV rental in Ridgeway booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the Driftless backroads with real peace of mind. During checkout you choose the protection level that fits your trip (the host does not set it), and coverage helps protect you financially against most damage to the RV. Pro tip: take a quick walk-around video at pickup so any pre-existing dings are clearly documented before you roll out.

Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in that perfect Cox Hollow weekend without second-guessing. After the grace period, refund eligibility depends on how far out you cancel relative to your trip start date. Your full policy details are visible during checkout and in your RVezy dashboard. Pro tip: book early for July and August peak weekends in Ridgeway, since Driftless Area campgrounds fill up fast and you have flexibility built in if plans change.

You just show up with groceries and start the trip. Delivery fees are set by the host and commonly range from about $2 to $4 per mile round trip. dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/devilslakeWhere are the best campgrounds near Ridgeway, WI?

Governor Dodge State Park (about 4 miles away) is the local crown jewel, with more than 260 family campsites split between the Cox Hollow and Twin Valley campgrounds, electric hookups available, modern showers, and two swimming lakes. Blue Mound State Park (about 10 miles east) sits at the highest point in southern Wisconsin and offers electric sites plus an observation tower. Tom's Campground in Blanchardville (about 15 miles south) has full hookups and a pool, great for families. Blackhawk Lake Recreation Area (about 20 miles west) offers quieter electric sites on a 220-acre lake. dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/govdodge/recreation/campingWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Ridgeway?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for RV camping in Ridgeway, with the absolute sweet spots being early June (wildflowers, fewer mosquitoes) and mid-September through mid-October (60-75°F days, Driftless fall colors that rival New England). July and August bring warm 80°F days perfect for swimming at Cox Hollow Beach, though humidity and weekend crowds peak then. Spring shoulder season (late April-May) is the smart-money move, with cheaper rates and Stephen's Falls running full at Governor Dodge. Pro tip: book a late-September Driftless leaf-peeping trip and you'll see why locals call this region the Midwest's best-kept secret.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/govdodgeCan I rent an RV in Ridgeway in winter?
Yes, a winter RV rental in Ridgeway, Wisconsin is absolutely possible and a beautiful adventure if you are prepared. Governor Dodge State Park keeps a limited number of family campsites open year-round with electric hookups available, and a subset of sites is plowed as staffing allows. Look for RVs on RVezy listed as four-season or winter-ready, with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and propane furnaces. Many local hosts offer cold-weather packages with extra propane, heated water hoses, and skirting tips. January daytime highs average in the upper 20s F and overnight lows often drop into the single digits, so shore power is essential. Pro tip: this is prime cross-country ski and snowshoe country at Blue Mound, and you will likely have the trails to yourself.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/govdodge/recreation/campingI have never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You are going to be great. First time renting an RV in Ridgeway? Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water systems, propane, and dump procedures, no guessing required. The roads around Ridgeway are gentle and rural (think US Highway 18/151 and quiet county routes), which makes them ideal for learning to handle a motorhome. Class C and small travel trailers drive much like a large van. You can also message your host any time mid-trip with questions. Pro tip: do a shake-down night at Governor Dodge State Park, just 4 miles up the road, before tackling longer drives toward Wisconsin Dells or the Mississippi.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Highway 23 or a dead battery at Cox Hollow Campground is a phone call away from being solved. RVezy's support team is reachable around the clock too, before, during, and after your trip. Your host is also typically just a text away and knows the rig's quirks better than anyone. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before you leave Ridgeway, and snap a photo of the rig's VIN and license plate at pickup so you have key info ready if you ever need to call in.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Ridgeway RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel from Ridgeway is welcomed by most RVezy hosts. Popular RV road trips from Ridgeway include crossing into Iowa via the Mississippi River bridge at Prairie du Chien (about 55 miles), heading toward Minnesota, or rolling south to Galena, Illinois (about 45 miles). Cross-border travel into Canada is allowed by many hosts, just confirm with your host and RVezy before booking so the insurance is squared away for the crossing. Travel into Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: the Great River Road along the Mississippi from Prairie du Chien up to La Crosse is a stunning two-day loop right out of Ridgeway's backyard.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat's the realistic fuel budget for an RV trip from Ridgeway?
Plan smart and fuel won't break the bank. Class B campervans rented in Ridgeway average 18-22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8-12 MPG, and Class A rigs typically run 6-10 MPG. Wisconsin gas prices generally sit close to the national average, with stations in Dodgeville (4 miles south) and Mount Horeb (12 miles east) offering the most convenient diesel and gasoline fill-ups. For a typical 4-day, 400-mile Driftless loop in a Class C, budget around $150-$200 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Dodgeville before heading north, because gas stations get sparse on the rural roads between Ridgeway and Wisconsin Dells.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Ridgeway?
For Wisconsin state parks like Governor Dodge and Blue Mound, reservations open 11 months in advance through the Wisconsin DNR reservation system, and summer weekends genuinely sell out within hours of opening. For July, August, and any holiday weekend, book as far ahead as possible. Private campgrounds like Tom's Campground in Blanchardville typically have more flexible windows, often 3-6 months out. Midweek and shoulder-season sites are often available just days ahead. Pro tip: if Governor Dodge is full, check back often as plans change, since many sites free up in the 2-3 weeks before any given weekend.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/reservationsWhat are the roads like for driving an RV around Ridgeway?
Driving an RV around Ridgeway is refreshingly relaxed compared to big-city RV trips. US Highway 18/151 runs right through town with wide lanes and easy pull-offs, and County Highways H, T, and ZZ are well-maintained two-lanes that handle motorhomes comfortably. The Driftless Area means rolling hills, so expect some gentle grades, downshifting on descents is your friend in a Class C. Watch for Amish horse-drawn buggies on rural roads near Hollandale and tight turns into Governor Dodge's campground loops. Winters can bring snow and ice from December through March. Pro tip: avoid driving narrow farm roads at dusk when deer are most active. Wisconsin has one of the highest deer-collision rates in the country.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/travel/road/default.aspxWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Ridgeway?
Local campgrounds make RV camping in Ridgeway easy. Governor Dodge State Park offers electric hookups at many family sites (no water or sewer at the site), modern showers, flush toilets, a dump station, and potable water fill stations. Blue Mound State Park has similar electric-available sites plus a swimming pool, a rare feature in the Wisconsin State Park system. For full hookups (water, electric, sewer at the site), head to Tom's Campground in Blanchardville or Yellowstone Lake State Park area private campgrounds. Most state park sites accommodate rigs up to about 35 feet, with a limited number of longer pull-throughs. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank and dump before leaving the area, since dump stations outside state parks are limited in the immediate Ridgeway area.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/govdodge/recreation/campingWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Ridgeway?
Ridgeway RV rentals come ready to roll. Expect a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, sleeping for 2-8 depending on size, climate control with furnace and air conditioning, and seatbelted seating for everyone on board. Most rentals also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, and an awning for sunny evenings at Cox Hollow Beach. Many hosts offer a generator for off-grid stays at Governor Dodge's non-electric loops, and some provide WiFi hotspots, helpful since cell coverage gets spotty in the Driftless valleys. Pro tip: ask your host about a starter kit (linens, dishes, coffee maker) so you don't need to pack the kitchen sink for your first trip.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/govdodgeWhat add-ons and pickup options do Ridgeway RV hosts offer?
Local hosts make customizing your trip simple. Popular add-ons for an RV rental in Ridgeway, Wisconsin include camp chairs and tables, generators, bike racks, kayak or SUP packages, propane fire pits, linen and kitchen kits, and pet packages. Pricing for each add-on is set by the host and shown on the listing. Many hosts offer flexible pickup windows, and delivery to local campgrounds is widely available. Mileage policies range from around 100 free miles per night to unlimited (use RVezy filters to compare). Pickup is typically at the host's driveway in or near Ridgeway, Dodgeville, or Mount Horeb, with a 30-60 minute orientation walkthrough. Pro tip: bundling delivery, setup, and a linen kit often costs less than buying each add-on separately, just ask.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ridgeway%2C%20WisconsinHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book your RV rental in Ridgeway, RVezy charges your card through the platform, no cash handoffs with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before your trip and released after a successful return, typically within a few business days. The renter protection plan you selected covers most accidental damage to the RV, so the deposit is really there for items like excessive cleaning, late returns, or smoking violations. Pro tip: do a thorough walk-around video at both pickup and drop-off, and return the RV clean with tanks dumped per the host's instructions to keep your deposit return quick and smooth.
