RV camping near Stevens Point
Stevens Point sits in central Wisconsin along the Wisconsin River, roughly midway between Madison and the Northwoods. The area works as a practical base for RV travelers, with private campgrounds, county parks, and Wisconsin State Park System properties all within a short drive. Portage County itself is flat to gently rolling, threaded by the Wisconsin, Plover, and Little Plover rivers, which shape most of the local camping options.
Close-in private parks include Ridgewood Campground and River's Edge Campground on the Wisconsin River, plus Vista Royale Campground Ltd and the smaller Cozy Inn Motel and RV Park. For lake-based stays, Lake Dubay Shores Campground sits on the Lake Dubay flowage north of town. County parks such as Jordan Park and Lake Emily Park add lower-cost public options.
Hartman Creek State Park, about 20 miles east near Waupaca, is the nearest state park with reservable electric sites and a chain of small lakes for paddling.
Things to do around Stevens Point
The Green Circle Trail is a 27-mile loop around Stevens Point that links riverfront paths, forests, and neighborhoods, and is popular for biking and walking straight from a campground. Schmeeckle Reserve, a nature reserve on the north side of the city, adds a visitor center, marked trails, and easy bird watching for families with younger kids.
Water is the main draw for most RV visitors. The Wisconsin River, Plover River, and Lake Dubay all support fishing, kayaking, and tubing, with public launches scattered through Portage and Wood counties. Hartman Creek State Park near Waupaca offers seven clear-water lakes, a 300-foot sand beach on Hartman Lake, and 12 miles of hiking and biking trails.
In town, SentryWorld golf, the Stevens Point Sculpture Park, and local breweries round out rainy-day options.

The practical camping season in central Wisconsin runs from early May through late October. Most private and county campgrounds close for winter, and while state parks accept reservations year-round, water systems and shower buildings are typically shut down outside the main season. Hartman Creek State Park's family and group campgrounds, for example, are closed from December 1 through April 1. Late May through mid-September is peak, with warm days, long evenings, and full services at nearly every park.
June, July, and August bring the warmest weather and the most reliable swimming and paddling conditions, but also the highest mosquito and biting-fly pressure near wetlands and river bottoms. Weekends and holidays fill quickly, especially waterfront and electric sites.
Early fall is often the best window for RV travel. September and early October deliver cool nights, fewer insects, and hardwood color along the Wisconsin River, while sites are easier to book on short notice. Late-fall trips should plan for freezing overnight lows.
How to book a campsite
For Wisconsin State Park System properties, including Hartman Creek near Waupaca, reservations are required and can be made for the same day of arrival or up to 11 months before the planned occupancy date, online through the DNR reservation system or by calling 1-888-947-2757. All state parks, southern forests, and state recreation areas are completely reservable, with no first-come, first-served standard sites at these properties.
Nonresident campers pay an additional per-night fee on top of the standard campsite rate, and a vehicle admission pass is required for each motor vehicle. Advance reservations booked before May 15 for stays between May 15 and October 31 require a minimum two-night stay, and holiday weekends require a minimum three-night reservation.
Private parks like Ridgewood Campground, River's Edge Campground, Vista Royale Campground Ltd, Lake Dubay Shores Campground, and Cozy Inn Motel and RV Park each handle their own bookings by phone or website, so contact them directly.
What to expect on site
Most established campgrounds within a 30-minute drive of Stevens Point offer electric hookups, potable water, and flush or vault toilets, and several have dump stations. Full hookups with sewer at the site are more common at private parks than at county or state properties. Waterfront and pull-through sites book earliest.
Cell coverage is generally reliable in and around Stevens Point but drops in wooded pockets along the Plover River and at more remote county parks. Bring bug spray from June through August, and pack layers for cool evenings even in midsummer.
Only certified firewood or firewood originating from within 10 miles of the park is allowed into Wisconsin state parks, a rule aimed at slowing invasive pests. Buy wood locally rather than hauling it in from home.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Stevens Point, WI
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Stevens Point, WI?
Good news for budget-conscious travelers: RV rental in Stevens Point is affordable compared to coastal markets. Towable trailers typically run around $95-$150 per night, while motorhomes average about $175-$250 per night, and many hosts offer weekly or monthly discounts. To score a cheap RV rental in Stevens Point, aim for shoulder seasons like late May or September, book midweek, and choose a travel trailer if you already have a tow-capable vehicle. Stevens Point sits in central Wisconsin between Milwaukee and Minneapolis, so you get small-town pricing with easy access to both metros. Filter listings by your dates and watch for owners who include generators, camp chairs, or kitchen kits at no extra charge.
rvezy.com/rv-rental/united-states/wisconsin/stevens-pointWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Stevens Point, WI?
Great news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Stevens Point. Wisconsin does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes, travel trailers, or fifth wheels you'll find on RVezy. You'll just need to be 25 or older and complete RVezy's quick ID verification through your account, which usually takes just a few minutes. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most first-time renters in Wisconsin are pleasantly surprised at how straightforward the paperwork is, so you can spend your energy planning stops at Schmeeckle Reserve and the Green Circle Trail instead.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/dmv/license-drvs/how-to-apply/rec-vehicles.aspxIs my RV rental in Stevens Point protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, you can book with confidence. Every RV rental in Stevens Point booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance. The protection plan covers accidental damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you select your coverage level during checkout, not the host, so you stay in control of how much peace of mind you want. Review the coverage options carefully at booking, especially if you are planning longer Wisconsin road trips that include gravel forest roads up north.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Stevens Point RV trip?
Booking is lower-risk than you might think. RVezy sets a standard cancellation policy across the platform (hosts do not set their own), which includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates without second-guessing. Refund eligibility after that depends on how far out you are from your trip start date, and additional protections exist for situations like severe weather, which matters in Wisconsin where spring storms or early snow can occasionally rearrange plans. Full cancellation details are available in the RVezy Help Center. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Stevens Point rigs for summer weekends like Riverfront Rendezvous in early July.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Stevens Point?
Absolutely, and your pup will love it. Plenty of pet-friendly RV rental options in Stevens Point are available on RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to see hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots. Once you're rolling, Stevens Point is genuinely dog-friendly: the 27-mile Green Circle Trail is leashed-dog-approved, Bukolt Park along the Wisconsin River has plenty of grassy run-around space, and Rivers Edge Campground allows pets at most sites. Pro tip: message the host before booking to mention your dog's size and breed, and ask about any cleaning expectations. Pack a collapsible water bowl because central Wisconsin summers can hit the high 80s and your dog will be thirsty after a Schmeeckle Reserve hike.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/rulesCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Stevens Point?
Yes, RV delivery in Stevens Point is one of the smartest moves for first-timers and families. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV directly to your campsite at Rivers Edge Campground, Jordan County Park, or Lake Emily Park, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means you skip the stress of towing or maneuvering a 30-foot motorhome through town. Delivery fees vary by distance, but most Stevens Point hosts deliver within a 30-50 mile radius. Filter listings by Delivery to see who offers it, then message the host with your campground name and dates. Pro tip: book delivery to Hartman Creek State Park, about 30 minutes south, for a beautiful kettle-lake setting without the driving stress.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/hartmancreekHow does mileage work on a Stevens Point RV rental, and how far can I go?
You have plenty of room to roam. Each host on RVezy sets their own mileage allowance, and you'll see it clearly on the listing before you book, with some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer Wisconsin road trips. Stevens Point is a fantastic launchpad: Wisconsin Dells is about 60 miles south (roughly an hour), Door County is 130 miles east (around 2.5 hours), the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is 220 miles north (about 4 hours), and Milwaukee is 175 miles southeast. Pro tip: if you're planning a full loop around northern Wisconsin or up into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, filter for unlimited-mileage rentals or message a host to negotiate a higher daily mileage cap before you book.
nps.gov/apis/index.htmWhat are the best campgrounds near Stevens Point for RV camping?
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Stevens Point. Top picks include Rivers Edge Campground on the Wisconsin River with full hookups and a sandy beach; Jordan County Park, a quiet Portage County gem on Jordan Pond with electric sites and canoe access; Lake Emily Park in nearby Amherst Junction for waterfront sites; and DuBay Park Campground along Lake DuBay for fishing fans. About 30 minutes south, Hartman Creek State Park offers wooded sites with access to seven kettle lakes. Pro tip: county park rates typically start around $20-$28 per night, making them some of the best value campgrounds near Stevens Point for families.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/hartmancreek/campingWhen is the best time to take an RV trip from Stevens Point?
The sweet spot for a Stevens Point RV trip is mid-May through early October, with peak season running June through August when daytime highs sit comfortably in the 75-82°F range and lakes are warm enough for swimming. September is a local favorite: fewer mosquitoes, cool 60s-70s daytime temps, and the start of stunning fall color across central Wisconsin's hardwood forests. Winters here are genuinely cold (January averages in the teens with regular snow), so most campgrounds close from late October to April. Pro tip: time your visit for the last weekend of September to catch peak foliage on the Green Circle Trail and the Central Wisconsin Cranberry Blossom season in nearby Warrens earlier in June.
weather.gov/grb/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay renting one in Stevens Point?
You've got this, especially in Stevens Point. First time renting an RV is easier here than in most cities: traffic is light, parking lots are generous, and I-39 runs straight through town with wide lanes and easy on-ramps. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, the generator, and waste systems, so you're never handed keys and waved off. If you'd rather skip driving altogether, book a host who offers delivery and they'll set everything up at your campsite. Pro tip: for your first drive, pick a quieter route like Highway 66 east toward Rosholt rather than rush-hour I-39, and take a practice loop around Bukolt Park before heading out of town.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/safety/safety-eng/work-zones/default.aspxWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my Wisconsin trip?
You are never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so one phone call gets help dispatched whether you are parked at Standing Rocks County Park or pulled over on Highway 10 outside Stevens Point. The service covers common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing to a qualified repair shop. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app for quick tips on quirks specific to their rig. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number in your phone before you leave the driveway, and snap a quick photo of the RV's VIN and license plate so you can share it instantly if you ever need to call for help.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Stevens Point RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome and easy. Most hosts gladly let you cross into Minnesota, Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Illinois, or Iowa on a Stevens Point RV road trip, which puts the North Shore, Mackinac Bridge, and Chicago all within reach. Canadian crossings (such as heading to Thunder Bay or Sault Ste. Marie) may be allowed depending on the host and protection package coverage, so confirm with both your host and during your RVezy checkout before booking. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because protection coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: popular cross-state routes from Stevens Point include the 4-hour drive to Duluth, MN and the 3.5-hour run to Mackinaw City, MI.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow should I budget for fuel on a Stevens Point RV road trip?
Wisconsin is one of the more affordable Midwest states for fuel, which keeps your RV road trip from Stevens Point reasonable. Expect Class C motorhomes to average 8-10 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans 15-20 MPG, and a truck towing a travel trailer roughly 10-12 MPG. With Wisconsin gas prices typically running close to the national average, a 300-mile loop to Door County and back from Stevens Point usually costs $90-$140 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up at Kwik Trip stations, a Wisconsin favorite with consistently competitive pricing and easy RV-friendly pump access, especially the larger location on Division Street in Stevens Point.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Stevens Point?
Book sooner than you think, especially for summer weekends. Wisconsin State Parks like Hartman Creek and Council Grounds use the Wisconsin DNR ReserveAmerica system, which opens reservations 11 months in advance, and prime July-August waterfront sites genuinely disappear within hours of opening. Portage County parks like Jordan and Lake Emily open seasonally and fill 2-3 months ahead for holiday weekends. Private parks like Rivers Edge Campground take direct bookings online and often have more last-minute flexibility. Pro tip: if you're flexible, target Sunday-through-Thursday stays for easier availability and lower rates, then plan day trips to Wisconsin Dells (60 miles south) or Stevens Point Brewery downtown during the day.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/reservationsWhat are the local driving conditions like around Stevens Point?
Driving in and around Stevens Point is refreshingly stress-free. The main artery, I-39, runs north-south with wide shoulders and gentle grades, and Highway 10 east-west has light traffic outside of rush hour. The biggest local consideration is deer, which are abundant in central Wisconsin (especially at dawn and dusk on rural roads like Highway 66 and County Highway HH), so drive cautiously through wooded stretches. In winter, snow and ice are common from late November through March, and most RV rentals are not winterized for road travel during that window. Pro tip: avoid downtown Stevens Point's older narrow streets near the historic square with anything longer than 25 feet, and use the public lots off Main Street instead.
511wi.gov/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Stevens Point?
You'll find a great mix of comfort and outdoors. Most campgrounds in the Stevens Point area offer 30/50-amp electric hookups, with full hookups (water, sewer, electric) common at private parks like Rivers Edge Campground and partial hookups at county parks like Jordan and Lake Emily. Dump stations and potable water fill stations are available at South Wood County Park, Rivers Edge, and most state parks including Hartman Creek. Showers, flush toilets, and laundry are standard at private campgrounds; county parks typically have vault or flush toilets plus drinking water. Pro tip: if your site only has electric, top off your fresh water tank before pulling in and plan to dump on your way out, since central Wisconsin's lakes mean lots of beautiful but hookup-limited waterfront sites.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/campWhat's included inside a typical Stevens Point RV rental?
You'll be impressed at how move-in ready these rigs are. A typical motorhome rental in Stevens Point comes with a full kitchen (stove, microwave, fridge, sink), a private bathroom with shower and toilet, sleeping for 4-8 depending on the floorplan, roof air conditioning, propane heat, and seatbelted seats for travel. Many Class C and Class A rentals also include a generator, outdoor awning, TV, and Bluetooth stereo, and some hosts offer Wi-Fi hotspots as an add-on. Campervan rental Stevens Point options (Class B) are more compact but still cover the essentials for two travelers. Pro tip: read the listing's amenities list and message the host to confirm specifics like bedding, kitchenware, and outdoor chairs, since some hosts include them and others charge a small add-on fee.
rvezy.com/rv-rental/united-states/wisconsin/stevens-pointWhat add-ons and pickup options are available with a Stevens Point RV rental?
You can customize your RV rental in Stevens Point to fit exactly how you want to travel. Common host add-ons include kitchen and linen kits ($25-$75), bikes, kayaks or paddleboards (great for Lake DuBay and the Wisconsin River), portable grills, generators, and Wi-Fi hotspots. For pickup, most hosts meet you at their home base near Stevens Point and provide a 30-60 minute walkthrough, though many also offer delivery to local campgrounds or your driveway. Mileage policies vary by listing (commonly 100-150 miles per night, with unlimited options available), so check the listing summary before booking. Pro tip: if you're planning a Door County loop, ask the host upfront about a higher mileage cap, since round-trip is about 260 miles from Stevens Point.
travelwisconsin.com/article/road-trips/wisconsin-road-tripsHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Stevens Point RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which keeps everything protected and traceable. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before your trip starts, with the amount clearly shown on the listing and at checkout, and it is released after a smooth return. Add-ons, optional mileage packages, and any agreed extras are itemized so there are no surprise charges. Pro tip: do a quick walkaround video with your host at pickup and again at drop-off in Stevens Point, take photos of fuel and mileage levels, and you will virtually eliminate any deposit disputes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre winter RV rentals available in Stevens Point?
Yes, though winter rentals here are a special adventure rather than the norm. Central Wisconsin winters are seriously cold, with January and February averaging highs in the low 20s°F and overnight lows below zero, and most local campgrounds close from late October through April. A handful of Stevens Point hosts do rent four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and shore-power-ready setups, perfect for ice fishing trips on Lake DuBay or snowmobiling along Wisconsin's massive trail network. Filter for hosts who mention winter use and confirm cold-weather readiness directly. Pro tip: park at a private RV park with year-round electric hookups (such as some sites along Highway 10) and use the RV as a heated basecamp rather than driving long winter distances.
