Campgrounds and RV parks near Buffalo, WY

Buffalo sits at the eastern foot of the Bighorn Mountains in Johnson County, Wyoming, at the junction of Interstates 25 and 90. The town is a practical staging point for RV travelers because the Bighorns sit roughly halfway between Mount Rushmore and Yellowstone National Park, and U.S. Highway 16, the Cloud Peak Skyway, climbs directly west from town into the national forest. RV travelers have two distinct choices near Buffalo. Private full-hookup parks cluster on the edge of town along Highway 16 and near the interstate junction, including Mountain View Motel and Campground, Indian Campground, Big Horn Mountains Campground, Buffalo KOA Journey, and Deer Park Campground. West of town, the Bighorn National Forest operates a string of developed campgrounds along the Skyway with vault toilets and drinking water but no hookups. The town of Buffalo was incorporated in 1884, and its historic Main Street, the Clear Creek Trail System, and nearby Cloud Peak Wilderness give RV travelers a workable mix of in-town amenities and immediate mountain access.

Private RV parks in Buffalo, including Mountain View Motel and Campground, Indian Campground, Big Horn Mountains Campground, Buffalo KOA Journey, and Deer Park Campground, are booked directly through each operator's website or by phone. Summer weekends around the Fourth of July, the Johnson County Fair, and Longmire Days fill first, so reserve well ahead if a big-rig pull-through is required. Bighorn National Forest campgrounds along the Cloud Peak Skyway west of Buffalo, such as Tie Hack and Middle Fork, use a different system. Reservations are made through Recreation.gov by phone at 1-877-444-6777 or online, are recommended for holiday weekends, and most campgrounds open for reservations six months in advance of their opening date. Many sites remain first-come, first-served.
