Casper Mountain camping overview
Casper Mountain rises just south of the city of Casper in central Wyoming. Casper sits in the North Platte River Valley at an elevation of about 5,300 feet, with Casper Mountain rising some 3,500 feet above the valley floor to the south. The mountain itself is managed largely by Natrona County Parks, while most full-service RV camping is clustered in and around the city below.
RV travelers typically split time between two zones. Riverside and in-town parks along the North Platte, such as Casper East RV Park and Campground, Fort Caspar Campground, Rivers Edge RV and Cabins Resort, Casper KOA Journey, and Platte River RV and Campground, offer hookups, dump stations, and easy access to groceries and fuel. The mountain campgrounds sit higher, cooler, and more primitive.
Casper Mountain offers six reservable campgrounds, an archery range, the Crimson Dawn Museum, a biathlon range, reservable pavilions at Garden Creek Falls in Rotary Park, and a Nordic ski lodge. These county campgrounds lack public potable water, so campers should arrive with tanks filled.
Things to do around Casper Mountain
Trails are the main draw. The Bridle Trail offers wide views of Casper and connects to the Garden Creek Falls area in Rotary Park, a short waterfall walk that pairs well with a creekside picnic. Mountain biking, horseback riding, and archery are all available on the mountain, and the Crimson Dawn Museum sits along the ridge.
In summer, families camp under the stars, visit Crimson Dawn, and catch live music at the Beartrap Summer Festival held each year at Beartrap Meadow. Fishing, wildlife watching, and paddling are easy from the North Platte parks in town.
When snow arrives, Nordic skiing runs from the Casper Mountain Trails Center, and snowshoeing is popular day and night. High elevation and minimal light pollution also make the area strong for stargazing.

Casper has four distinct seasons and a semi-arid climate. Winters are long, cold, and dry, summers are warm and generally dry, springs are mild and wet, and autumns short and crisp. The mountain itself runs noticeably cooler than the valley in every season and holds snow later into spring.
Prime RV season on Casper Mountain is roughly late June through early September, when access roads are clear and campgrounds are open. Natrona County operates four seasonal mountain campgrounds, Beartrap Meadow, Deerhaven, Stubie Loop, and Tower Hill, and in the winter months the area shifts to cross-country skiing and snowmobile trails.
Spring is the wettest stretch and can bring heavy late-season snow at elevation. About 70 percent of annual precipitation falls during the growing season from late spring through summer, mostly from thunderstorms and occasional big spring snowstorms, and monthly snowfall stays fairly uniform November through February with a bump in March and April. In-town RV parks generally stay open year-round.
How to book campgrounds near Casper Mountain
Casper Mountain campgrounds are managed by Natrona County Parks and use the county's CivicRec online reservation system. A valid camping permit is required before establishing a campsite, and reserved sites can be purchased online or in person at the Parks Department office in Mills. Reservations are available 90 days in advance.
Changes and cancellations can be made through the CivicRec account up to one day before the stay, with user credit issued for the cancelled amount and no cancellation fee. Each camping unit or individual may camp a maximum of ten days in any one campground, after which the unit must move to a different campground.
Private RV parks in town, including Casper East RV Park and Campground, Fort Caspar Campground, Rivers Edge RV and Cabins Resort, Casper KOA Journey, and Platte River RV and Campground, take direct bookings through their own websites or by phone. Reserve summer weekends and holiday stretches well ahead.
What to expect on the ground at Casper Mountain
Expect real elevation. Casper Mountain tops out above 8,000 feet, so nights stay cool even in July, afternoon thunderstorms build quickly, and altitude can affect anyone arriving from lower ground. Travelers should drink plenty of water and take it easy at first.
Mountain campgrounds are primitive. Sites offer access to skiing, biking, riding, archery, waterfalls, and interpretive trails, but there is no public potable water, so plan accordingly. Big rigs are better suited to the in-town RV parks, which offer full hookups, laundry, and dump stations within a short drive of the mountain roads.
Wind is a constant. Windy days are frequent in winter and spring. Awnings should be stowed when leaving the site, and drivers should watch for gusts on exposed highway stretches.
