Camping near Dayton, Wyoming
Dayton sits at the foot of the Bighorn Mountains in northern Wyoming, along U.S. Highway 14 (the Bighorn Scenic Byway) and the Tongue River. The town is a practical base for RV travelers heading into Bighorn National Forest or working their way along I-90 between Sheridan and the Montana border. Elevation in town is roughly 3,900 feet, but Forest Service campgrounds off Highway 14 climb quickly toward Burgess Junction near 8,000 feet.
Options close to town lean toward small, private RV parks. Foothills Motel and Campground and Lazy R Campground and RV Park in Ranchester offer hookups, showers, and easy pull-throughs for travelers who need utilities and quick highway access. Connor Battlefield and Campground, a Wyoming State Historic Site on the Tongue River in nearby Ranchester, provides shaded, first-come sites with drinking water and vault toilets.
Higher up the mountain, Bear Lodge Resort at Burgess Junction combines lodging with RV and tent sites, and the Sheridan / Big Horn Mountains KOA Journey east of the pass covers travelers who prefer a full-amenity park.
Things to do around Dayton
The Bighorn Scenic Byway (U.S. 14) climbs west out of Dayton into Bighorn National Forest, with pullouts, trailheads, and Tongue River Canyon access along the way. Fishing is strong on the Tongue River and in mountain lakes and creeks above, with rainbow, brown, and brook trout common. Sibley Lake, up the pass, is open to non-motorized craft and has an accessible fishing dock.
History stops are close in. Connor Battlefield and Campground in Ranchester marks the 1865 Battle of Tongue River and has a monument, picnic grounds, and a playground. Southwest of Burgess Junction, the Medicine Wheel National Historic Landmark sits high on the ridge and is a significant cultural site.
Bear Lodge Resort at Burgess Junction is a common base for backcountry access on the Forest Service trail network that fans out from the top of the pass.

Camping season in the Dayton area is shaped by elevation. Lower-elevation sites in town and along the Tongue River can open in spring, while Bighorn National Forest campgrounds along U.S. 14 typically operate June through mid-September because of snowpack and cold nights at 7,700 to 8,400 feet. North Tongue, Prune Creek, and Sibley Lake all follow that summer window.
Connor Battlefield and Campground allows camping seasonally, from May 1 through October 31, when the site closes to camping and vehicles. Foothills Motel and Campground, Lazy R Campground and RV Park, and the Sheridan / Big Horn Mountains KOA Journey operate on longer shoulder seasons since they sit at valley elevations with hookups.
July is the most reliable month for mountain access and clear passes. May and June bring the wettest weather at valley elevations and higher runoff in the Tongue River. September delivers cool nights, thinner crowds, and early color, but frost and snow at higher campgrounds arrive quickly. Winter access on the mountain shifts largely to snowmobiles.
How to book campgrounds near Dayton
Forest Service campgrounds in Bighorn National Forest along the U.S. 14 corridor, including North Tongue, Prune Creek, and Sibley Lake, are booked through Recreation.gov, with reservations available up to six months in advance. Popular July and August weekends fill early, so booking as soon as the window opens is recommended. Sites are single-family with picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets, and drinking water. Sibley Lake has a loop with electrical hookups; the other Highway 14 campgrounds do not.
Connor Battlefield and Campground is first-come, first-served, with no reservations taken by Wyoming State Parks. Arriving earlier in the day on weekends improves the odds of a site.
Private parks are booked directly. Foothills Motel and Campground, Lazy R Campground and RV Park, Bear Lodge Resort, and the Sheridan / Big Horn Mountains KOA Journey take reservations by phone or through their own websites. RV travelers should confirm rig length limits and hookup type when booking.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a strong elevation swing on any trip that combines town and mountain camping. Sites near Dayton and Ranchester are grassy, cottonwood-shaded, and close to highways and services. Mountain sites off U.S. 14 are set in lodgepole pine forest, with cool nights, mostly no hookups, and vault toilets. Bring water and be prepared for temperature drops of 30 degrees Fahrenheit or more between day and night, even in midsummer.
Cell coverage is inconsistent once past the switchbacks west of Dayton. Service is limited or absent at Burgess Junction, and Wi-Fi at mountain lodges can be spotty.
This is bear and moose country. Store food properly, keep a clean site, and check current Forest Service fire restrictions before burning. Fuel, groceries, and dump stations should be handled in Dayton, Ranchester, or Sheridan before heading up the pass.
