Campgrounds and RV parks near Greybull, WY

Greybull works as a base for day trips into the Bighorn Mountains and around the Bighorn Basin. Highway 14 climbs east from town onto the Bighorn Scenic Byway, passing Prune Creek and Burgess Junction near 7,700 feet, with trailheads, alpine lakes, and creek fishing along the way. Highway 16 to the south crosses via the Cloud Peak Skyway, generally the easier grade for larger rigs. Closer in, families can visit Medicine Lodge State Archaeological Site for petroglyphs and short hikes, drive out to Shell Falls, or explore BLM country north toward Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area. Yellowstone's East Entrance sits roughly two hours west via Cody, which makes Greybull a common overnight stop for RVers pacing a longer park trip. Fishing, wildlife viewing, and stargazing are the main evening activities at the campgrounds themselves.

The Greybull RV season effectively runs late spring through early fall. In-town parks such as Green Oasis Campground and Greybull KOA Holiday operate on the longer end, while most national forest campgrounds in the nearby Bighorn Mountains operate roughly June through September, with many closing after Labor Day. High-elevation sites above 7,000 feet can hold snow well into June, and snow and freezing temperatures are possible from fall through winter and into spring. Late June through August is peak season. Days are hot and dry in the basin, with July highs averaging in the upper 80s, and mountain campgrounds fill on weekends. Mosquitoes can be a factor at creekside sites in the Bighorns, so campers should pack repellent for summer stays. September brings cooler nights, lighter crowds, and the start of hunting season on national forest lands. Winter camping is primarily limited to lower-elevation sites and established RV parks in town. Mountain passes on Highways 14 and 16 can close temporarily for snow between late fall and spring.

Greybull is a small basin town, not a resort area. Expect straightforward RV parks with level pads, standard hookups, potable water, dump stations, restrooms, and laundry. Cell service is generally reliable in town and drops off quickly once travelers climb into the Bighorns. Elevation and terrain vary sharply within a short drive, ranging from about 3,800 feet in town to over 9,000 feet in the nearby Bighorn Mountains. Summers are hot and dry, with July daytime highs averaging in the mid to upper 80s and overnight lows in the mid 50s, while spring and fall bring more dramatic temperature swings. Afternoon thunderstorms and strong winds are common in summer, so awnings should be secured. RVers heading east over the Bighorns should note that Highway 16 is less steep and less switchbacked than Highway 14, which matters for longer rigs and towables.
