Campgrounds near Guernsey, Wyoming
Guernsey sits in eastern Wyoming on the North Platte River, and camping in the area is centered on Guernsey State Park. The park surrounds Guernsey Reservoir and covers thousands of acres of rugged bluffs, pine, and open water, with camping spread across roughly a dozen campgrounds arranged around the reservoir shoreline.
Most RV travelers stage on the reservoir's eastern shore off Lake Side Drive, where Newell Bay - Guernsey State Park, Spotted Trail - Guernsey State Park, Black Canyon Point - Guernsey State Park, Fish Canyon Cove - Guernsey State Park, and Long Canyon East - Guernsey State Park sit close to the water. These sites are primitive by design, with fire rings and picnic tables at each site and vault or comfort-station facilities in the loops. Sites with electric and water hookups are concentrated on the west side of the park at the Sandy Beach and Sandy Point areas, and a dump station is available near the park entrance.
The park is also a National Historic Landmark, known for extensive Civilian Conservation Corps stonework, trails, and the Guernsey Museum overlooking the reservoir.
Things to do around Guernsey
The reservoir drives most of the activity: boating, kayaking, fishing, swimming at sandy coves, and paddleboarding when winds allow. Shoreline sites at Newell Bay - Guernsey State Park, Spotted Trail - Guernsey State Park, Black Canyon Point - Guernsey State Park, Fish Canyon Cove - Guernsey State Park, and Long Canyon East - Guernsey State Park put boats and paddle craft steps from the water.
On land, the park has miles of restored CCC-era hiking and biking trails, with major access near Brimmer Point. The Guernsey Museum, the Castle, and the Brimmer Point overlook are worth a half-day between camp and lake time.
Historic stops sit within a few miles of town: the deeply worn Oregon Trail Ruts south of Guernsey off Highway 26, and Register Cliff, where emigrants carved their names into sandstone southeast of town.

Seasonal patterns at Guernsey
- spring
March - May
57° / 34°F 39 mmWettest season, strong wind; reservable window opens May 1.
- summer
June - August
84° / 59°F 33 mmPeak season; July silt run closes boat ramps for weeks.
- fall
September - November
63° / 37°F 22 mmCool, dry, thin crowds; water shuts off October 1.
- winter
December - February
37° / 21°F 11 mmCold and windy; no campground water service.
Guernsey State Park campgrounds are open year-round, but the reservable window runs May 1 through September 30, and water service to the campgrounds is turned off from October through April. Off-season stays are self-contained: no potable water at sites, and winter temperatures routinely fall well below freezing.
July is the wild card. The Bureau of Reclamation runs an annual silt run at Guernsey Reservoir, typically starting shortly after the July 4th holiday. During the silt run, the reservoir drops roughly 25 feet, boat ramps go unusable for two to three weeks, and swimming and most water recreation stop. Camping, hiking, mountain biking, the playground, and the museum stay open, and the reservoir typically returns to normal operating level by around the end of July.
Late May through late June and August into September are the strongest windows for combined lake and land use. Fall brings cool nights, thin crowds, and reliable trail conditions before hookups shut down.
How to book a site
Guernsey State Park uses the Wyoming State Parks reservation system at reserve.wyoming.gov, or by phone through the state parks call center at 877-996-7275. Reservable sites at Newell Bay - Guernsey State Park, Spotted Trail - Guernsey State Park, Black Canyon Point - Guernsey State Park, Fish Canyon Cove - Guernsey State Park, and Long Canyon East - Guernsey State Park are booked through that system when they are in the reservable inventory between May 1 and September 30.
Wyoming residents can book reservable campsites up to 120 days before arrival; non-residents can book up to 113 days out. A daily or annual park pass is required in addition to the site reservation, and it is best to buy the pass first, since day-use and camping fees paid before the pass is purchased are not refundable.
Check-in is after 3:00 pm and checkout is before 11:00 am. Full refunds, minus the reservation fee, are offered for cancellations made on or before the day of arrival.
What to expect on the ground
Most sites in the eastern loops are primitive: table, fire ring, and grate, with vault toilets or comfort stations nearby and no site hookups. Hookup sites with water and electric cluster at Sandy Beach and Sandy Point on the west side, and a dump station serves the park.
Cell coverage across the park is fair to poor and varies by cove, so download maps, reservations, and park brochures before arriving. Wind is a real factor in eastern Wyoming, especially in spring and early summer; awnings and canopies should be stowed when unattended.
A reservation covers one vehicle at the site. Additional vehicles pay at the entrance booth or self-pay station on arrival. Quiet hours are typical for state parks, generators should be off overnight, and pets must stay leashed and off the designated swim beaches.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Guernsey, WY?

Expect travel trailers to start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes to range from $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A motorhomes to run $250 to $400 per night. Because Guernsey is a small gateway town rather than a tourist hub, prices stay friendly compared to Jackson or Yellowstone. To score a cheap RV rental in Guernsey, book midweek, target May or September, and use the price-range filter on RVezy. Pro tip: many local hosts offer multi-night discounts of 10 to 20 percent, so a five-night Oregon Trail trip can be a real bargain.
wyoparks.wyo.gov/index.php/places-to-go/guernseyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Guernsey, Wyoming?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Guernsey. Wyoming does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes or travel trailers. You will need to be at least 25 with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking, so there is no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the United States? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto club. With those in hand, you are cleared to roll out toward Guernsey State Park and the Oregon Trail Ruts.

Plans change, and RVezy makes it lower-risk to book your Guernsey RV rental. Absolutely, pets are welcome on many Guernsey RV trips. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see every pet-friendly RV rental in Guernsey that allows dogs (and sometimes cats), and message the host to confirm any pet fee or size limits before you book. Once you arrive, your pup will love the area: Guernsey State Park allows leashed dogs on all of its trails and campgrounds, and the Oregon Trail Ruts State Historic Site is dog-friendly on-leash too. The North Platte River shoreline at Sandy Beach is a favorite splash spot in summer. Pro tip: pack a tie-out stake since shade trees can be sparse at some lakeside campsites.
wyoparks.wyo.gov/index.php/places-to-go/guernseyCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Guernsey?
Yes, RV delivery in Guernsey is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're flying into Cheyenne or Casper and don't want to drive an unfamiliar rig. Many RVezy hosts will deliver and set up your motorhome or travel trailer directly at Guernsey State Park's Sandy Beach, Black Canyon Cove, or Newell Bay campgrounds, or at a private property if you're hosting a family reunion. Just use the Delivery filter on RVezy, enter your destination address or campground, and you'll see which hosts service Guernsey and their delivery fees. Pro tip: delivery is a game-changer for first time renting an RV because the host levels the rig, hooks up power and water, and walks you through every system on-site.
wyoparks.wyo.gov/index.php/places-to-go/guernseyHow far can I drive from Guernsey on an RV trip?
You can range across some of the best country in the West from Guernsey, and many RVezy hosts offer generous or even unlimited mileage packages. Popular RV road trips from Guernsey include Fort Laramie National Historic Site (about 15 miles southeast), Scotts Bluff National Monument in Nebraska (about 70 miles east), Cheyenne (about 100 miles south), Mount Rushmore in South Dakota (about 230 miles northeast), and Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado (about 250 miles south). Each host sets their daily mileage cap and per-mile overage rate, all clearly listed on the booking page. nps.gov/fola/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Guernsey, WY?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Guernsey. Guernsey State Park has seven campgrounds along the reservoir, including Sandy Beach (great for swimming), Newell Bay, Black Canyon Cove, and Long Canyon, with a mix of electric and non-electric sites. Larson Park Campground is a city-run option right in town along the North Platte River with full hookups and easy walk-to-dinner access. For a more rustic feel, Spring Canyon and Brimmer Point sit deeper in the state park with stunning canyon views. Pro tip: Guernsey State Park sites can be reserved through the Wyoming State Parks reservation system, and weekends in July and August fill up fast, so book 30 to 60 days ahead.
wyoparks.wyo.gov/index.php/places-to-go/guernseyWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip to Guernsey?
The sweet spot for an RV trip to Guernsey runs from late May through mid-September, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 75 to 90 degree Fahrenheit range and the reservoir is full for swimming and boating. June brings wildflowers and long daylight, July and August are peak warm-weather camping, and September offers cooler nights (40s to 60s) and thinner crowds. Spring can be windy with surprise snow into April, and winters drop well below freezing with limited campground services. Local insider tip: visit the Oregon Trail Ruts at sunrise or sunset in summer, the low light makes the wagon grooves in the sandstone look impossibly dramatic, and you'll often have the site to yourself.
weather.gov/cys/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Guernsey?
You've got this. Guernsey is one of the friendliest places in Wyoming for first time renting an RV: traffic is light, Highway 26 is wide and well-maintained, and most parking lots in town (including the state park) easily accommodate big rigs. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering the generator, slide-outs, dump procedures, and propane, and you can text them throughout your trip with questions. Stick to a relaxed pace, take wider turns than you think you need, and use a spotter when backing into your campsite. Pro tip: do a quick practice drive in an empty lot before heading toward Guernsey State Park's curvier interior roads, you'll feel like a pro in 20 minutes.
dot.state.wy.us/home/travel/road_construction.htmlWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every Guernsey RV rental booked on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. Your host is also just a message or phone call away and usually knows the quickest fix for their rig. Cell coverage is solid in the town of Guernsey and along Highway 26, though it can get patchy deep inside Guernsey State Park canyons, so screenshot key contacts before you head out. Pro tip: the closest full-service auto and RV repair shops are in Wheatland (about 30 miles west) and Torrington (about 35 miles east), both reachable quickly if roadside ever needs to escalate beyond a quick fix.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Guernsey RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate road trips are one of the best parts of renting an RV in Guernsey. From here you are within easy reach of South Dakota (the Black Hills and Mount Rushmore), Nebraska (Scotts Bluff and Chimney Rock), and Colorado (Rocky Mountain National Park), and RVezy rentals are generally covered for travel throughout the continental United States. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed on some rentals, but you must confirm with your host before booking since it can affect insurance and roadside coverage. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: message the host directly from the listing page to discuss your route, most are happy to help map out a multi-state loop and confirm coverage details.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Guernsey RV trip?
Wyoming's gas prices tend to run near the national average, and Guernsey-area pumps often sit a few cents below the U.S. mean, which is great news for your fuel budget. Plan on roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon (mpg) for a Class C motorhome, 6 to 8 mpg for a Class A, and 12 to 16 mpg for a truck towing a travel trailer. A weekend loop from Guernsey to Fort Laramie, Scotts Bluff, and back (around 200 miles) typically runs $70 to $120 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Guernsey or Wheatland before heading deeper into ranch country, gas stations get sparse once you turn off Highway 26.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I reserve a campsite in Guernsey State Park?
For the best sites at Guernsey State Park, book 30 to 90 days ahead, especially for any weekend between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when lakeside spots at Sandy Beach and Newell Bay fill quickly. Reservations are made through the Wyoming State Parks online reservation system (wyoparks.wyo.gov), which lets you pick your exact site, see hookup type, and view a campground map. Walk-up sites are sometimes available midweek if you're flexible. Local insider tip: Black Canyon Cove and Spring Canyon tend to stay open longer than the busier shore campgrounds and offer the most scenic, cliff-rimmed setting, perfect for sunset photos right from your RV's awning.
wyoparks.wyo.gov/index.php/places-to-go/guernseyWhat are the local driving conditions like around Guernsey?
Driving an RV around Guernsey is refreshingly easy. Highway 26 and U.S. 85 are well-paved two-lane roads with wide shoulders, and the streets through town are flat and spacious. The main thing to watch for is Wyoming wind, sustained gusts of 25 to 40 mph are common on the open plains east and south of town, and tall rigs feel them, so slow down and keep both hands on the wheel. Inside Guernsey State Park, the road climbs and curves through Black Canyon with a few tight switchbacks and a low-clearance area, so check the park's vehicle guidance for rigs over 12 feet tall. Pro tip: check Wyoming 511 before you drive in spring or fall for wind and snow advisories.

Guernsey State Park offers electric hookup sites (typically 30-amp) at several campgrounds, vault and flush toilets, potable water fill stations, and a dump station near the park entrance, all included in standard camping fees. Larson Park in town has full hookups (water, electric, sewer) right at the site, which is perfect if you want to skip the dump-station stop. Showers are available at the state park's main bathhouses during summer. Pro tip: top off fresh water in town before heading deep into the park, and use the dump station on your way out to keep the trip smooth and your tanks happy for the next RV camping in Guernsey adventure.

Mileage policies vary: some include 100 to 150 miles per day, others offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, all shown clearly on the listing. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a generator add-on for a one-and-done campervan rental in Guernsey, you'll arrive to a fully ready campsite without towing a thing.
