Campgrounds and RV parks near Powder Horn, WY

Powder Horn sits just south of Sheridan in north-central Wyoming, at the eastern foothills of the Bighorn Mountains. The community is minutes from Interstate 90 and US Highway 14, so RV renters can reach the area from Billings, Casper, or the Black Hills without navigating difficult mountain grades. Private RV parks cluster along the I-90 corridor in Sheridan and Ranchester. Options in Sheridan County include Lazy R Campground and RV Park in Ranchester, Peter D's RV Park in Sheridan, and the Sheridan / Big Horn Mountains KOA Journey. Jackalope Campground and Daltons RV Center provides another full-hookup stop close to the interstate. Public camping is nearby too. Connor Battlefield consists of 20 camping and picnic sites nestled in an oxbow of the Tongue River in the shade of large cottonwoods, in Ranchester, and camping sites operate on a first-come, first-served basis, without reservations. The adjacent Bighorn Mountains, a sister range of the Rocky Mountains, offer grasslands, alpine meadows, clear lakes, and glacial valleys, giving renters a mix of hookup parks near town and rustic forest sites higher in the range.

Private parks along I-90 take direct reservations through their own websites or by phone. The Sheridan / Big Horn Mountains KOA Journey, Peter D's RV Park, Lazy R Campground and RV Park, and Jackalope Campground and Daltons RV Center each handle their own bookings, and holiday weekends fill early in summer. National forest sites are handled through the federal system. Campground and cabin reservations may be made through Recreation.gov at 1-877-444-6777 or online at recreation.gov. Most campgrounds are available for reservations six months in advance of their opening date. State-run camping works differently. Camping sites operate on a first-come, first-served basis, without reservations at Connor Battlefield, so arriving earlier in the day improves the odds of getting a site, especially on summer weekends.
