Camping near Ranchester, Wyoming
Ranchester sits in northern Sheridan County along the Tongue River, just off Interstate 90 at Exit 9 on U.S. Highway 14. The town serves as a low-traffic base for the east slope of the Bighorn Mountains and the Bighorn National Forest, and it sits about nine miles south of the Montana state line.
Options in and around town range from small in-town RV parks to the state-run campground at Connor Battlefield State Historic Site. Lazy R Campground and RV Park and Foothills Motel and Campground both sit near U.S. 14 in Ranchester or neighboring Dayton, while Peter D's RV Park and the Sheridan / Big Horn Mountains KOA Journey are a short drive south in Sheridan. For history-oriented campers, Connor Battlefield sits on an oxbow of the Tongue River and marks the 1865 Battle of Tongue River between troops led by General Patrick E. Connor and an Arapaho village led by Black Bear.
Town elevation is roughly 3,760 feet, so summer nights stay cool and winters are cold and snowy.
Things to do near Ranchester
The Tongue River Canyon, reached by a gravel road from nearby Dayton, is the standout day trip. The out-and-back trail follows the river between tall limestone walls and connects into the Cloud Peak Wilderness for longer hikes. Fishing is strong for trout and whitefish in the Tongue, and the canyon also draws rock climbers and mountain bikers.
Inside Ranchester, Connor Battlefield offers picnic areas, a playground, horseshoe pits, and shaded riverside walks under mature cottonwoods. Visitors can cross a pedestrian suspension bridge into town for supplies.
Drivers can take U.S. Highway 14 west up into the Bighorns for the Bighorn Scenic Byway, with pullouts, alpine lakes, and access to Forest Service campgrounds and trailheads near Burgess Junction.

The practical camping season runs from late spring through early fall. Connor Battlefield permits camping from May 1 through October 31, and the park closes to camping and vehicles on October 31. Most Bighorn National Forest campgrounds gate their loops or drop to self-supported use once snow returns, and opening and closing dates vary by elevation.
May brings the wettest weather of the year, with river flows on the Tongue running high, which can affect fishing and occasionally floods low-lying ground. July and August are the peak booking months, with warm days, cool nights, and afternoon thunderstorms possible in the mountains. September is quieter, with cottonwoods turning gold along the river.
Winter travel is limited. Private RV parks in the Sheridan area may operate longer seasons, but Connor Battlefield and public campgrounds up in the Bighorns are closed to vehicles once snow arrives.
How to book
Reservation systems split cleanly by land manager. Connor Battlefield State Historic Site operates first-come, first-served and does not take reservations, so plan to arrive earlier in the day on summer weekends. Bighorn National Forest campgrounds use Recreation.gov or 1-877-444-6777, with most sites reservable up to six months in advance of the campground's opening date. Some Forest Service sites remain first-come, first-served, and reservations are recommended for holiday weekends.
Private parks such as Lazy R Campground and RV Park, Foothills Motel and Campground, Peter D's RV Park, and the Sheridan / Big Horn Mountains KOA Journey are booked directly with each property. For July and August stays with full hookups, contact private parks several weeks in advance.
What to expect
Ranchester is a small Wyoming town with limited services, so plan grocery and fuel stops in Sheridan, about 15 miles south. Cell service is generally reliable in and near town but drops out quickly once vehicles turn up into Tongue River Canyon or higher into the Bighorns.
Connor Battlefield has flush toilets, potable water, picnic tables, fire rings, grills, and a playground, with dirt roads and parking spurs. Two sites are ADA accessible. Sites work for tents, trailers, and RVs but do not offer hookups. Private parks in the area provide full hookups, showers, and laundry.
Wildlife in the surrounding country includes black bear, mountain lion, moose, elk, and mule deer, so store food and trash securely. Bring layers, since summer nights can drop into the 40s even after hot afternoons.
