Campgrounds near Wheatland, Wyoming
Wheatland sits along Interstate 25 in Platte County, southeastern Wyoming, roughly midway between Cheyenne and Casper. The town serves as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the North Platte River corridor, the Laramie Range foothills, and Oregon Trail landmarks. Elevation is a little over 4,700 feet, and the surrounding landscape is high plains and grazing country rather than mountain forest.
RV options close to town include Mountain View Park and Peak View RV Park, both offering full hookups and easy Interstate 25 access. El Rancho Village RV and Cabins adds cabin rentals for travelers who want an alternative to the rig for a night.
For reservoir camping, Guernsey State Park lies about 25 miles northeast of Wheatland via US-26. Sandy Cove and Sandy Point, on the west side of the reservoir, are the park's developed campgrounds with electric and water hookups. The park has 12 campgrounds around the reservoir, with additional sites accessible off Lake Side Drive on the east shore.
Things to do near Wheatland
Guernsey State Park is the main draw. The reservoir supports boating, swimming, and fishing, and the park is a National Historic Landmark for its 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps stonework. About 14 miles of restored CCC trails start from the Brimmer Point turnoff and loop past overlooks of the reservoir and dam.
Oregon Trail history is unusually accessible from Wheatland. The Oregon Trail Ruts, cut into sandstone by wagon wheels, sit about half a mile south of the town of Guernsey off Highway 26, and Register Cliff, where emigrants carved their names, is two miles southeast of Guernsey.
From Peak View RV Park, Fort Laramie National Historic Site, the ruts, and Register Cliff are all within a short drive. Grayrocks Reservoir, southeast of Wheatland, offers quieter fishing and dispersed access.

The Wheatland area has a semi-arid, high-plains climate with cold winters and hot, dry summers. May is typically the wettest month; June through August bring long daylight, warm days, and afternoon thunderstorms. Winter is cold and often windy, with light to moderate snow.
Guernsey State Park campgrounds are open year-round, but water services to the campgrounds are shut off from October through April, so cold-season visitors need to be self-contained. Reservable sites at Guernsey are only bookable for arrival dates between May 1 and September 30.
A key planning note: Guernsey Reservoir undergoes an annual silt run, typically after the July 4th holiday, when the Bureau of Reclamation drops the water level. During the silt run, water recreation is generally restricted, so travelers focused on boating or swimming should target June or late August into September. Private RV parks near Wheatland, including Peak View RV Park, generally stay open through winter.
How to book near Wheatland
Guernsey State Park campsites, including Sandy Cove and Sandy Point, are reserved through the Wyoming State Parks reservation system at reserve.wyoming.gov or by calling the state parks call center at 877-996-7275. Reservations are accepted up to four months ahead of the arrival date, and only for arrival dates from May 1 through September 30. A park pass is required in addition to the campsite fee. Outside that window, and at non-reservable campgrounds inside the park, sites are first-come, first-served.
Private parks near Wheatland, including Mountain View Park, Peak View RV Park, and El Rancho Village RV and Cabins, are booked directly with the operator by phone or through their websites. Summer weekends and rodeo weekends can fill up, so booking a few weeks ahead is sensible.
What to expect on-site
Private RV parks near Wheatland are compact, working parks rather than resorts. Expect gravel pads, full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service at most sites, laundry, and shower facilities. Peak View RV Park sits on open prairie with wide views, some highway and rail noise, and long pull-throughs suitable for big rigs.
At Guernsey State Park, Sandy Cove and Sandy Point offer electric and water hookups; most other campgrounds in the park are more primitive, with fire rings, picnic tables, comfort stations, and a trailer dump station near the south entrance. Cell service around the reservoir varies from fair to poor.
Wyoming State Parks limit stays to 14 days in any 30-day period, quiet hours are observed overnight, and pets must be leashed.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Wheatland, WY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Wheatland, WY?

You'll also need to be 25 or older to be an approved driver on RVezy, and your ID is verified right through the booking flow, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from abroad? That means no driving stress and no setup learning curve on day one. Common drop spots include Mountain View RV Park right off I-25, Lewis Park in town, and Glendo State Park on the reservoir. Just use the Delivery filter when searching and message the host to confirm distance fees and your exact site number.

Many RVezy hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for longer loops. Guernsey State Park, about 25 miles east, offers historic CCC-built camping near the Oregon Trail Ruts. Pro tip: reserve Glendo sites early for summer weekends.
wyoparks.wyo.gov/index.php/parks/glendoWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Wheatland?
Late May through mid-September is the sweet spot for RV camping Wheatland, with daytime highs typically in the 75 to 88F range and warm evenings perfect for campfires. June and early September are quieter and have the most pleasant temperatures, while July brings the Platte County Fair and Rodeo and peak Glendo Reservoir boating. Spring (April to early May) can deliver surprise snow, and winter lows often dip into the teens with strong winds along I-25. Pro tip: shoulder season trips in early June and the first half of September save you money and give you uncrowded campsites at Glendo and Guernsey State Parks.
weather.gov/cys/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Wheatland?

Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering the generator, slide-outs, propane, water systems, and dashboard controls, and you can ask as many questions as you need. If even that feels like a lot, book a host who offers delivery and setup so the rig is fully ready when you arrive. Your host is also your first-line resource and usually a quick phone call away. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN and roadside assistance number on pickup day so you have it handy if you're outside cell coverage in the Laramie Peak area.

Fuel is a real line item, but it's manageable. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A rigs sit around 7 to 10 MPG. Wyoming gas prices tend to run close to or slightly below the national average, and Wheatland has multiple stations off I-25. For a typical 4-day loop from Wheatland to Glendo, Guernsey, and back (roughly 150 miles), budget $60 to $120 in fuel for most rigs. Pro tip: fill up in Wheatland before heading into the Laramie Peak backcountry where stations are sparse.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Wheatland?
For Wheatland itself you can often grab a site a week or two out, but the popular state parks fill faster. Glendo State Park and Guernsey State Park reservations open through the Wyoming State Parks reservation system several months in advance, and summer weekends, especially around the Fourth of July and the Platte County Fair, sell out fast. Lewis Park in Wheatland is first-come, first-served with a short stay limit. Pro tip: lock in your Glendo site as soon as the reservation window opens, then build the rest of your itinerary around it.
wyo-park.usedirect.com/What are driving conditions like around Wheatland?
Wheatland is one of the easier places in Wyoming to drive an RV, but a little local knowledge helps. I-25 runs flat and straight through town, so the main thing to watch is wind, the stretch between Cheyenne and Wheatland is famous for gusts that can exceed 50 mph and occasionally trigger high-profile vehicle advisories. Check the Wyoming Department of Transportation road conditions at wyoroad.info before you roll. Winter brings ground blizzards and black ice, while summer is mostly clear. Pro tip: if WYDOT posts a light or high-profile warning, park at Mountain View RV Park and enjoy a slow morning until the wind eases.
wyoroad.info/What amenities do campgrounds near Wheatland offer?

blm.gov/visit/laramie-peakHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure, you pay directly through RVezy at booking, never in cash to the host. As long as the rig comes back in the same shape you got it, with the right fuel and tank levels, the hold is released after your trip. Pro tip: take a quick walkaround video at pickup and drop-off so any pre-existing scuffs from gravel roads near Glendo or Guernsey are documented and you breeze through deposit release.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take my Wheatland RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes to interstate travel, and that's part of what makes a Wheatland RV trip so much fun. From here you can easily cross into Colorado (Rocky Mountain National Park, Fort Collins), South Dakota (Mount Rushmore, Badlands), Nebraska (Scotts Bluff National Monument, about 90 miles east), and Montana. Canada travel depends on the host and protection coverage, so message them directly before booking if it's on your itinerary. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: Scotts Bluff National Monument makes a perfect overnight side trip and pairs beautifully with Fort Laramie National Historic Site on the way back.
