Sheps Canyon State Recreation Area sits along the shores of Angostura Reservoir, just 6 miles south of Hot Springs in the southern Black Hills of South Dakota. This newer campground offers excellent access to a boat ramp and prime shore fishing, making it a popular destination for water enthusiasts and anglers alike. Surrounded by the scenic canyon landscape of the Black Hills region, the area supports a wide range of outdoor activities including boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, canoeing, horseback riding, hiking, birdwatching, and hunting. The campground features 22 electrical sites with 30-amp hookups and water hookups, plus 40 non-electrical sites and 11 dedicated horse campsites, accommodating a variety of RV sizes including big rigs with pull-through sites available. Amenities include a dump station, flush toilets, vault toilets, drinking water, picnic tables, grills, and ADA-accessible facilities. A group lodge and camping cabins are also available for those seeking a more sheltered stay. Pets are welcome with a fee. Operated by South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks, Sheps Canyon Recreation Area is an ideal basecamp for exploring the reservoir and the surrounding Black Hills countryside near Hot Springs.
