Frequently asked questions about renting an RV in Chatham-Kent, ON
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Chatham-Kent?
An RV rental in Chatham-Kent is more affordable than you might think, with most listings on RVezy ranging from about CA$125 to CA$275 per night depending on the size and season. Compact travel trailers and pop-ups sit at the lower end, while Class C motorhomes and large fifth wheels land at the top. Booking midweek or in the shoulder seasons of late May or September is the easiest way to find a cheap RV rental in Chatham-Kent, since Lake Erie cottage demand peaks in July and August. Pro tip: filter by Delivery and you'll often save on fuel by skipping the pickup drive entirely. Many Chatham, Blenheim, and Wallaceburg hosts will drop your rig right at Rondeau or Wheatley Provincial Park.
chatham-kent.ca/visitck/stayandeat/placestostay/Pages/cabins-cottages-and-camping.aspxDo I need a special licence to rent an RV in Chatham-Kent, Ontario?
Good news: your regular Ontario Class G driver's licence (or equivalent from your home province, state, or country) is all you need for virtually every RV on RVezy in Chatham-Kent. No commercial licence, no air-brake endorsement, no RV-specific training required. You do need to be at least 25 years old to book, and RVezy verifies your ID quickly through the platform before your trip. Visiting from overseas? Bring your home licence along with an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're ready to roll. Most first-timers are surprised at how straightforward the process is, which makes Chatham-Kent a relaxed, low-stress place to try RV travel for the first time.
ontario.ca/page/driving-and-roadsWhat protection and roadside support is included when I rent an RV in Chatham-Kent?
Every RV rental in Chatham-Kent booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can explore the Talbot Trail with peace of mind. You choose your protection tier at checkout (not the host), and it covers eligible accidental damage to the RV. If you get a flat on Highway 401 near Tilbury or a battery dies at Mitchell's Bay, one call to RVezy roadside assistance gets help dispatched. Review the protection options carefully at booking and pick the tier that matches how far you plan to roam across southwestern Ontario.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Chatham-Kent RV trip plans change?
You can book your RV rental in Chatham-Kent with confidence. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the individual host), and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking so a quick change of plans does not cost you. Refund eligibility after the grace period depends on how far out you are from your trip start date. To see the exact terms that apply to your trip, review the cancellation details on your booking confirmation. Locking in early for a Rondeau Provincial Park weekend is low risk and helps you secure the best RVs before summer fills up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Chatham-Kent?
Yes, and Chatham-Kent is a great region for travelling with pets. To find a pet-friendly RV rental in Chatham-Kent, toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you will see listings where dogs are welcomed by the host. Once on the road, Rondeau Provincial Park has designated pet areas and Wheatley Provincial Park allows leashed dogs on most trails. Mitchell's Bay and the Thames River walking paths in downtown Chatham are great for off-RV strolls. Message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees and share your dog's size, then bring a long tie-out for shaded campsites at Campers Cove.
ontarioparks.ca/park/rondeauCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Chatham-Kent?
Yes, RV delivery in Chatham-Kent is one of the most popular booking options and a game changer for first-time renters. Many local hosts will drive the motorhome or trailer straight to your campsite at Rondeau Provincial Park, Wheatley Provincial Park, Campers Cove in Wheatley, or a private property near Erieau or Mitchell's Bay. They level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. To find delivery-ready listings, switch on the Delivery filter and enter your destination address. Book delivery for your first night so you can settle in stress-free and catch the Lake Erie sunset from Erieau Pier.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Chatham-Kent%2C%20OntarioHow do mileage policies work and how far can I drive on a Chatham-Kent RV trip?
Chatham-Kent hosts set their own mileage policies, and many offer generous daily allowances or even RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is great because the region is a natural launchpad for road trips. From downtown Chatham you're about 75 km to Windsor, 110 km to London, 200 km to Niagara Falls, and roughly 290 km to Toronto, all on flat Highway 401. A typical motorhome rental Chatham-Kent listing offers 200 to 300 km per day included, with extra kilometres priced between 25 and 45 cents. Pro tip: check the mileage policy on the listing page before booking, and if you're planning a longer Lake Erie loop down to Long Point or Point Pelee, ask the host about a flat-rate kilometre package.
ontario.ca/page/ontario-highway-networkWhat are the best campgrounds near Chatham-Kent for an RV trip?
Chatham-Kent has some of southern Ontario's most underrated campgrounds, and most have full or partial hookups for RVs. Rondeau Provincial Park near Morpeth offers 261 sites with electric hookups, a long sandy Lake Erie beach, and world-class Carolinian forest birdwatching. Wheatley Provincial Park has 220 sites with a 40-foot RV length max, plus marshes and beaches. Campers Cove Campground in Wheatley offers 30 and 50-amp service, Wi-Fi, and a quarter-mile beach. Mitchell's Bay Marine Park has 108 lakeside sites with a boat launch, and Rondeau Shores Trailer Park welcomes nightly stays. Pro tip: Rondeau and Wheatley book up months ahead, so reserve early on the Ontario Parks website for prime summer weekends.
ontarioparks.ca/park/rondeauWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Chatham-Kent?
Chatham-Kent has one of the mildest, longest camping seasons in Canada thanks to its Carolinian climate and Lake Erie influence. The sweet spot runs from late April through mid-October, with daytime highs of 18 to 22°C in May, 26 to 29°C in July and August, and gorgeous 20°C afternoons through September. Spring is famous for the Festival of Flight bird migration at Rondeau Provincial Park, while early autumn delivers warm lake swims and fewer mosquitoes. Winters are cool and damp (around 0 to -5°C), and most provincial campgrounds close from late October to early April. Pro tip: book a September RV camping Chatham-Kent trip for the lowest rates, warmest water, and quietest beaches at Erieau.
climate.weather.gc.ca/climate_normals/results_1981_2010_e.html?stnID=4694I have never driven an RV before. Is Chatham-Kent a good place for first-time renters?
Chatham-Kent is honestly one of the friendliest places in Ontario for first time renting an RV. The roads are flat, traffic is light outside of the 401 corridor, and the destinations are close together, so you're never far from your campsite. Every RVezy host provides a full orientation at pickup, walking you through propane, water, the generator, slide-outs, and dump procedures before you leave. You can message them any time during your trip with questions. Pro tip: pick a Class B campervan or a small Class C motorhome for your first trip, then book a two-night shakedown at Wheatley Provincial Park (just 35 km from Chatham) to get comfortable before any longer adventures.
ontario.ca/page/drivers-handbookWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my Chatham-Kent trip?
You are never on your own. Every RV rental in Chatham-Kent booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. If something goes sideways on Highway 401 near Tilbury or on a quiet concession road outside Dresden, one call gets help dispatched. Your host is also a direct line of support and often knows trusted local mechanics in Chatham, Blenheim, and Wallaceburg. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after the trip too. Save the roadside assistance number to your phone before you leave, and snap a photo of your rig's plate and VIN for faster service.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Chatham-Kent RV rental across the border into the United States?
Cross-border travel from Chatham-Kent is often possible, but it depends on the individual host and the insurance attached to the listing, so always confirm in writing before booking. Detroit is about 90 km west via the Ambassador Bridge or the Gordie Howe International Bridge, and many Chatham-Kent hosts welcome short hops into Michigan. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage does not extend there. Message the host directly from the listing page, confirm US coverage in writing, and bring your passport, vehicle ownership documents, and a host authorization letter for a smooth border crossing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I plan for a Chatham-Kent RV trip?
Budgeting for fuel is straightforward in Chatham-Kent because the terrain is flat and driving distances are short. Expect roughly 18 to 22 L/100km (about 11 to 13 mpg) for a Class C motorhome, 14 to 18 L/100km for a Class B campervan, and similar consumption for a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer. Gas prices in Chatham-Kent generally run a few cents below the Ontario average, and Costco in Chatham (off Richmond Street) typically has the cheapest fill-ups. A weekend RV road trip from Chatham-Kent to Point Pelee and back is only about 150 km, so total fuel cost stays well under CA$80. Pro tip: top up in Chatham before heading to Rondeau, where the closest stations are limited.
ontario.ca/page/gasoline-pricesHow far in advance should I book a campground in Chatham-Kent?
For provincial parks, book early, because Rondeau and Wheatley are two of southern Ontario's most loved campgrounds. Ontario Parks opens reservations exactly five months ahead of your arrival date through the Ontario Parks reservation website, and prime July and August weekends at Rondeau often sell out within hours of the booking window opening at 7 a.m. EST. Private campgrounds like Campers Cove, Mitchell's Bay Marine Park, and Rondeau Shores Trailer Park typically have more flexibility, especially midweek. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for the exact five-month-ahead date, create your Ontario Parks account in advance with payment details saved, and have backup sites picked out so you can book in under 60 seconds.
reservations.ontarioparks.ca/What are the driving conditions like around Chatham-Kent?
Driving an RV around Chatham-Kent is refreshingly easy. The region is famously flat (some of the lowest elevation farmland in Ontario), with wide rural roads and the well-maintained Highway 401 corridor running right through Chatham, Tilbury, and Ridgetown. There are no mountain passes, no narrow switchbacks, and very few low bridges to worry about. Watch for occasional farm equipment on concession roads in spring and fall, lake-effect fog along Lake Erie in early summer, and snow squalls between December and February if you're winter camping. Pro tip: if you're driving a tall motorhome, stick to Highway 401 and Highway 40 rather than older underpasses near downtown Chatham, and check Ontario 511 for real-time conditions before you roll.
511on.ca/What hookups and amenities should I expect at Chatham-Kent campgrounds?
Most Chatham-Kent campgrounds are well equipped for RVs. Rondeau Provincial Park offers electric (15/30-amp) sites along with comfort stations, water taps, a trailer sanitation station, and a park store. Wheatley Provincial Park provides electric service for trailers up to 40 feet plus a dump station. Private parks like Campers Cove and Mitchell's Bay Marine Park add 30/50-amp service, full water and sewer hookups, Wi-Fi, laundry, and showers. Potable water fills are available at most park gatehouses. Bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose, a 30-amp to 15-amp adapter, and a sewer hose support, since not every site is perfectly level, and your host can confirm what is already onboard.
ontarioparks.ca/park/rondeau/campingWhat features and amenities come with a typical Chatham-Kent RV rental?
A typical campervan rental Chatham-Kent or motorhome rental Chatham-Kent comes ready to camp. Expect real beds (most rigs sleep 4 to 8), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, cookware, and dishes, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with furnace and roof-mount AC, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many listings include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and either a built-in or portable generator for off-grid power at Rondeau. Some hosts include bedding, camp chairs, and a starter kit of toilet chemicals. Scan the listing's amenities section and the host's add-on list carefully, then message anything that's missing (like a Wi-Fi hotspot or bike rack) so it's ready at pickup.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Chatham-Kent%2C%20OntarioWhat add-ons and pickup logistics should I plan for when I rent an RV in Chatham-Kent?
Hosts in Chatham-Kent offer useful add-ons such as linens and towel packages, kitchen kits, propane fills, generators, portable BBQs, bike racks, and tow packages for boats heading to Mitchell's Bay or Erieau marina. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Chatham, Blenheim, Wallaceburg, or Tilbury, with a 30 to 60-minute walkthrough included. Delivery and setup are commonly priced per kilometre from the host's base, so confirm the rate on the listing. Return is at the same location with the propane and fuel topped up. Ask the host for their preferred dump station so return day is stress-free.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Chatham-Kent%2C%20OntarioHow does payment and the security deposit work on an RVezy Chatham-Kent rental?
Payment is handled entirely through RVezy, which keeps things simple and secure. You pay by credit card at booking, and funds are released to the host after your trip starts. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after the host confirms the RV is returned clean, undamaged, and with propane and fuel topped off. There are no cash exchanges or e-transfers. Do a quick walkaround video at pickup and drop-off, note any existing scratches with the host, and dump the tanks before return so your deposit comes back quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Chatham-Kent?
A Chatham-Kent RV trip is perfectly positioned for southern Ontario's greatest hits. Point Pelee National Park, Canada's southernmost mainland point, is just 75 km southwest, famous for spring bird migration and stunning marsh boardwalks. Niagara Falls is 290 km east via Highway 401, while Long Point Provincial Park on Lake Erie's north shore is 175 km away with one of Ontario's most beautiful sand beaches. Stratford (for the festival) is 165 km north, and Pinery Provincial Park on Lake Huron sits about 160 km north for dune-and-beach camping. Pro tip: stitch together a 5-day Lake Erie loop (Chatham to Point Pelee to Long Point and back), and use Rondeau as your launching basecamp for an easy, low-mileage family RV trip Chatham-Kent itinerary.
