Nicholas was excellent with communication. He gladly answered all my questions without hesitation. The camper REALLY has all you would need for camping, including hand soap, dish soap and body wash. He hooked it all up for us so when we got there all we had to do was unpack. There were 5 of us and I thought we would fit without issue, however, it was tight. But we did not spend much time in there so it was ok. I would (and likely will) definitely rent from Nicholas again. We had a great time.

Frequently asked questions about renting an RV in Portsmouth, VA

How much does an RV rental in Portsmouth typically cost?

An RV rental in Portsmouth, VA is one of the most budget-friendly ways to explore Coastal Virginia. On RVezy, you'll generally find travel trailers from about $90 to $150 per night, campervans around $125 to $200, and larger Class C motorhomes between $175 and $300 per night, with pricing set by each local host. To stretch your budget, book midweek, travel in the shoulder season (March, April, late September, October), or look for a cheap RV rental Portsmouth listing that includes generous mileage. Hosts in the Hampton Roads area often discount weekly bookings, so if you can stretch your trip to seven nights, you'll usually save enough to help cover fuel to the Outer Banks.

Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Portsmouth, VA?

Great news for first-timers: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Portsmouth, VA. Virginia does not require a commercial driver's license or any special RV endorsement for personal-use motorhomes, travel trailers, or campervans, no matter the size you'll find on RVezy. You'll just need to be at least 25 years old and complete RVezy's quick ID verification through the platform before pickup. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (usually under $20 from your local auto club). With paperwork sorted in minutes, you can spend your time planning stops in Olde Towne Portsmouth and along the Elizabeth River instead.

What protection and roadside assistance comes with my Portsmouth RV rental?

You're covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Portsmouth, VA on RVezy automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so flat tires, dead batteries, or a lockout near the Midtown Tunnel are handled with a single phone call. During checkout, you choose the protection level that fits your trip, ranging from essential coverage to more comprehensive plans that reduce your financial exposure on most damages to the vehicle. Pick your protection tier before you finalize payment so you know exactly what's included before you roll out toward Virginia Beach or the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.

What if I need to cancel my Portsmouth RV booking?

Life happens, and RVezy has you covered. Cancellation policies are set by RVezy, not individual hosts, so you'll get the same fair, predictable terms whether you rent a campervan, motorhome, or fifth wheel in Portsmouth. There's a grace period right after booking where you can cancel for a full refund, and additional refund tiers apply depending on how far out from your trip start date you cancel. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds the guest or provides travel credits. Book early to lock in the best RVs in Hampton Roads, then finalize your route once weather forecasts firm up closer to departure, especially during the June to November Atlantic hurricane season.

Can I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Portsmouth?

Absolutely, your pup is welcome on the road. To find a pet-friendly RV rental in Portsmouth, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see listings whose hosts allow dogs (and sometimes cats). Portsmouth is a great dog-travel base: the Elizabeth River Trail and Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve are leash-friendly, and nearby Virginia Beach has a dedicated off-leash dog beach during designated hours. Most local campgrounds, including Northwest River Park in Chesapeake and First Landing State Park in Virginia Beach, welcome leashed dogs on trails and at sites. Message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and bring a current rabies certificate, which several area campgrounds request at check-in.

Can the RV be delivered to my campground or hotel in Portsmouth?

Yes, and it's the easiest way to start your trip. RV delivery in Portsmouth is offered by many RVezy hosts, who will drive the rig to your campsite, driveway, marina, or even a nearby hotel parking lot, then level it, hook it up, and walk you through every system. This is perfect for first-timers, families flying into Norfolk International Airport (ORF) just 15 minutes away, or anyone who'd rather skip driving a large motorhome through the Downtown Tunnel. Filter for Delivery on RVezy to see hosts who offer this and their delivery radius, which often covers Virginia Beach, Suffolk, Chesapeake, and Williamsburg. Pro tip: book delivery to First Landing State Park or Northwest River Park so you arrive to a fully set-up basecamp.

How does mileage work and how far can I realistically travel from Portsmouth?

Portsmouth is a launchpad to some of the East Coast's best road trips, and mileage is flexible. Each RVezy host sets their own daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day), and some offer unlimited mileage packages that are great for longer routes. From Portsmouth you can easily reach Virginia Beach (about 20 miles), Williamsburg and Busch Gardens (about 50 miles), the Outer Banks and Nags Head (about 85 miles), Richmond (about 100 miles), Washington DC (about 200 miles), and Shenandoah National Park (about 230 miles). If you're planning an RV road trip from Portsmouth down to Cape Hatteras or up the Northern Neck, filter for listings offering RV rental with unlimited mileage so you can wander without watching the odometer.

Where are the best campgrounds near Portsmouth to park my RV?

You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Portsmouth, VA blend coast, forest, and history. Top picks include First Landing State Park in Virginia Beach (about 25 miles, oceanfront sites with full and partial hookups), Northwest River Park in Chesapeake (20 miles, lakeside sites and kayak rentals), Chesapeake Campground (15 minutes south), Newport News Park Campground (25 miles, 188 wooded sites open year-round), and The Colonies RV and Travel Park at historic Fort Monroe in Hampton (20 miles, full hookups inside a moated fort). For RV camping Portsmouth visitors love the proximity to both the Atlantic and the Great Dismal Swamp. Pro tip: book Virginia State Parks at reservevaparks.com or 800-933-PARK up to 11 months in advance for summer weekends.

When is the best time of year for an RV trip in Portsmouth?

The sweet spot is April through early June and September through October. Spring brings 65 to 78 degree highs, blooming dogwoods, and the Norfolk Harborfest just across the river. Fall delivers warm days in the 70s, cooler nights, fewer mosquitoes, and gorgeous color along the Dismal Swamp Canal. Summer (July and August) is hot and humid with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s plus afternoon thunderstorms, but it's prime beach season and most campgrounds run full programming. Winter is mild (40s to 50s) and many area RV parks stay open year-round, making December through February great for a quiet, cheap RV rental Portsmouth getaway. Pro tip: avoid Labor Day and the Memorial Day weekend if you want easier campground bookings.

I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?

You've got this, and your host is part of the team. First time renting an RV? Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, the generator, and tank dumping before you leave the driveway. Portsmouth itself is forgiving for new drivers, with wide arterials like Frederick Boulevard and Victory Boulevard. Larger rigs should avoid the Downtown and Midtown Tunnels and instead route via I-664 and the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel. Nervous about city driving? Book delivery and let the host bring the RV straight to your campsite, then practice short loops on quiet roads near the campground before heading out.

What happens if something breaks down during my trip?

You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance through the renter protection plan, so whether you've got a flat tire on I-64 near the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, a dead battery at First Landing State Park, or you need a tow back from the Outer Banks, one phone call gets help dispatched. Your host is also just a message away through the RVezy app for quick questions about the awning, slide-outs, or generator, and RVezy support is available before, during, and after every trip. Snap a photo of the rig's VIN, plate, and propane tank location during your walkthrough so you can share details quickly if you ever need roadside help.

Can I take the RV across state lines or into Canada or Mexico?

Most US road trips from Portsmouth are a green light. You can typically cross state lines freely, and popular routes from Portsmouth include the Outer Banks of North Carolina (about 85 miles), Washington DC and Skyline Drive in Shenandoah, and longer journeys up or down the coast, subject to your host's mileage policy. Canada travel may be allowed with advance host approval and confirmation of cross-border coverage, so message the host directly from the listing if that's on your itinerary. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage does not extend there. Confirm any out-of-state plans in writing through the RVezy message thread so everyone's aligned before you roll.

What's a realistic fuel budget for a Portsmouth RV trip?

Fuel is usually the second-biggest cost after the rental itself, and Portsmouth's gas prices typically run a few cents below the national average. Expect roughly 7 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class A or Class C motorhome, 10 to 14 MPG for a truck towing a travel trailer, and 18 to 22 MPG for a campervan. With Virginia regular unleaded averaging around $3.00 to $3.30 per gallon in recent seasons, a 300-mile loop to the Outer Banks and back in a Class C will cost roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at Wawa or Sam's Club on Frederick Boulevard before heading out, since prices on Route 17 and the Outer Banks bridges run noticeably higher.

How far ahead should I reserve a campground near Portsmouth?

Earlier is better, but you have options. For Virginia State Parks like First Landing or Kiptopeke, reservations open 11 months in advance at reservevaparks.com or by calling 800-933-PARK, and prime summer weekends (especially July 4th and Labor Day) sell out within days. Private parks like The Colonies RV and Travel Park, Chesapeake Campground, and Northwest River Park typically book 2 to 4 months ahead for peak season. Shoulder season (April, May, September, October) you can often score a great site 2 to 3 weeks out. Pro tip: if a popular park is full, set up an alert on Campnab or check the Virginia State Parks site at 7 a.m. for fresh cancellations, which are common 48 to 72 hours before arrival.
reservevaparks.com/

What are local driving conditions like in and around Portsmouth?

Portsmouth driving is straightforward once you know two things: the tunnels and the tolls. The Downtown and Midtown Tunnels under the Elizabeth River have height limits (13'6" and 13'0" respectively) and use Virginia's E-ZPass system, with peak congestion 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. Larger motorhomes should route via I-664 and the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel, which has no height restriction issues for standard RVs. Terrain is flat coastal plain, so no mountain grades to worry about, but hurricane season (June through November) can bring heavy rain and crosswinds, especially on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. Pro tip: download the VDOT 511 app for real-time traffic and tunnel closures before you leave the campground.

Where can I dump tanks and fill fresh water near Portsmouth?

You're well-served by local infrastructure. Most full-service campgrounds around Portsmouth, including Chesapeake Campground, Northwest River Park, First Landing State Park, and The Colonies RV and Travel Park, offer dump stations and potable water fills for guests, and many sell day-use access to non-guests for $10 to $20. Public dump stations are also available at several Virginia State Parks along your route. Most campsites in the area come with 30 or 50 amp electric, water, and many with sewer hookups, plus picnic tables, fire rings, and clean bathhouses with hot showers. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before leaving the campground for any Outer Banks trip, since hookups on the barrier islands can be tighter and water pressure varies.

What amenities can I expect inside a Portsmouth RV rental?

Modern comfort is the norm. RVs available for rent in Portsmouth, VA on RVezy typically include a queen or king bed, a kitchen with a fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with a toilet and shower, climate control (air conditioning is a must in Virginia summers, propane heat for cool nights), and a dinette that converts to sleeping space for the kids. Most listings include linens, kitchenware, outdoor chairs, and a propane grill. Many also offer a generator, solar setup, TV, and Wi-Fi hotspot. Pro tip: filter your search by Sleeps count and check the listing's amenity list for must-haves like a backup camera or outdoor shower, which makes rinsing off after a day at Virginia Beach or Sandbridge so much easier.

What add-ons and pickup options should I know about?

Customizing your trip is easy. Popular add-ons from Portsmouth RVezy hosts include camping chairs and tables ($10 to $25/trip), bedding and linen packages ($25 to $50), generator use ($3 to $5/hour or a flat daily fee), bike racks, kayak racks, and pet packages. Pickup is typically at the host's home or storage lot in Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Norfolk, or Virginia Beach, with most hosts offering 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. windows. Many also offer delivery to local campgrounds, hotels, or Norfolk International Airport for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary by host, with daily caps usually between 100 and 150 miles, and unlimited mileage available on select listings. Pro tip: ask about a Festival-Friendly listing if you're heading to Norfolk Harborfest or the Virginia Beach Patriotic Festival.

How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?

It's all simple and online. When you book your RV rental in Portsmouth, VA, you pay through the secure RVezy platform using a credit or debit card, with no cash exchanged at pickup. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) shortly before your trip starts, and it's released back to your card a few days after a successful return, assuming there's no damage or extra cleaning. To avoid issues, complete the pre-trip walkthrough with your host and photograph the interior and exterior at pickup and dropoff. Dump the black and gray tanks before returning if your host requires it, or pre-purchase the dump service add-on to skip the chore.
