Fishing drives most trips. Stocked rainbow and tiger trout can be fished year-round at Moonshine Lake, and Sulphur Lake is aerated to ensure survival of brook and rainbow trout stocks. Non-motorized and electric boats, canoes and kayaks suit these small lakes, and power vessels on Sulphur Lake are subject to a 12 km per hour speed limit. At Moonshine Lake, visitors can explore the 2.5 km lakeview trail, relax on the beach, cast a line for trout from the shore or on an electric motor boat, play on the multiple playgrounds, and use the bike park. The Historic Dunvegan site is also in the park, made up of historic buildings, learning opportunities, and Alberta's only suspension bridge.

Camping in this part of Alberta is strongly seasonal. Most provincial campgrounds in the region operate from the May long weekend through early September, with shoulder dates depending on weather. The last night for camping at Moonshine Lake Provincial Park Campground is September 3, and the Dunvegan Campground is open seasonally from the Victoria Day long weekend until Labour Day, while the Historic Dunvegan site is open year-round. Running Lake and the smaller recreation areas open with the spring thaw and close in mid-fall. July and August deliver the warmest, driest stretch and the longest daylight, making them the peak window for families. Spring nights can drop below freezing, and breakup mud is common on backroads into the smaller lakes. In the winter months at Moonshine Lake, visitors can cross-country ski on over 14 km of trails, ice-skate, snowshoe, ice-fish, and enjoy the day-use shelter and playgrounds, though services and plowing are limited. At Sulphur Lake, access in winter is limited as snow plowing is only done periodically. Wildfire smoke can affect air quality in mid to late summer, so check Alberta Parks advisories before traveling.

Expect quiet, low-density camping in boreal mixedwood forest, with gravel pads, treed buffers between sites and short drives to a lake or river. Moonshine Lake is the most developed option, with powered sites, sewage disposal, a playground, showers, beach, pier, and boat launch. Dunvegan offers 67 powered sites nestled among the Peace River valley slopes, with a mix of lightly treed individual and double/shared sites, each with a picnic table and firepit. The smaller recreation areas are unserviced: bring potable water and firewood, since water is not available on site at Sulphur Lake. This is bear country, so store food securely and follow posted wildlife guidance. Cell coverage is patchy off the main highways.
