Campgrounds and RV parks near Spirit River No. 133, AB

Moonshine Lake Provincial Park is the main recreation hub in the district. The lake is stocked with rainbow and tiger trout, and the park has a beach, pier, boat launch, and electric-motor boating, plus a 2.5 kilometre lakeview trail and a bike park. Jack Bird Pond, about 3.5 kilometres southeast of the main campground, is a productive spot for waterfowl viewing. Dunvegan Provincial Park combines Peace River access with a heritage site featuring a restored Hudson's Bay Company Factor's House, St. Charles Church, and rectory, with seasonal interpretive tours. The surrounding region offers golfing at Spruce Meadows Golf & Country Club, agricultural touring through the Peace Country, and quiet gravel-road driving routes. In winter, Moonshine Lake supports cross-country skiing on more than 14 kilometres of trail, snowshoeing, ice skating, and ice fishing.

The main RV season in the Peace Country runs from the Victoria Day long weekend in May through Labour Day in early September, with shoulder weeks in late April and mid-September depending on snowmelt and overnight frost. Power, showers, water fills, and sewage disposal at Moonshine Lake Provincial Park operate seasonally; the campground's last camping night falls around the Labour Day weekend, after which day-use access, ice fishing, and ski trails remain available through winter. Dunvegan Provincial Park is generally open from the Victoria Day weekend through Labour Day. July and August are peak months, with long daylight hours and the warmest lake temperatures. June can bring heavy mosquito activity and afternoon thunderstorms. September days are often clear and cool, with sharp overnight drops and early frosts. Winter is long and cold, with snow cover generally from November through March. Wildfire smoke from northern Alberta and British Columbia can affect air quality during dry summer stretches, and travellers should check Alberta Parks advisories for trail closures, fire bans, and wildlife warnings before arrival.

Expect quiet, rural surroundings with limited services between campgrounds. Cell coverage along Highway 49 and Highway 2 is generally usable but can drop in river valleys and on side roads. Provincial park sites at Moonshine Lake and Dunvegan are powered, with potable water fills and sewage disposal stations at the campground rather than at individual sites. Roads are mostly paved or well-maintained gravel and suitable for larger rigs, though wet weather can soften shoulders. Wildlife in the area includes black bear, moose, deer, beaver, and occasional cougar sightings reported at Moonshine Lake, so food storage and clean sites are important. Quiet hours at Alberta Parks campgrounds run from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., alcohol is restricted to registered campsites, and pets must be leashed at all times.
