Campgrounds and RV parks near Campobello Island, NB

The island's anchor attraction is Roosevelt Campobello International Park, the former summer home of Franklin D. Roosevelt, jointly administered by Canada and the United States. Head Harbour Lightstation, also known as East Quoddy, is accessible on foot at low tide and is a popular whale-watching vantage point in summer. Herring Cove Provincial Park sits on the Bay of Fundy and offers seven hiking trails of varying lengths, including the Carriage Road through old spruce forest and logging roads once used by the Roosevelts. The park also features a 9-hole golf course with a pro shop and licensed restaurant. Off-island day trips include the tidal whirlpool Old Sow off Deer Island, whale-watching tours from Head Harbour, and the resort town of St. Andrews by-the-Sea, home to Kingsbrae Garden and departure point for many Bay of Fundy boat tours.

The camping season on Campobello Island is short. Herring Cove Provincial Park typically operates from late May through late September, and most private campgrounds in Charlotte County follow a similar window. Outside those months, on-island services, restaurants, and the Roosevelt Campobello visitor center are generally closed. July and August are peak booking months, driven by warm weather, whale-watching season, and school holidays on both sides of the border. Reservable sites at Herring Cove and Kiwanis Passamaquoddy Park in St. Andrews fill weeks in advance for weekends; midweek availability is usually easier. Spring arrives late on the Fundy coast, with cold ocean fog common into June. Fall brings cooler nights, thinning crowds, and the possibility of tropical-storm remnants tracking up the Atlantic coast in September. Winter is not a camping season here: the East Coast Ferries run from Deer Island to Campobello does not operate in the cold months, leaving the FDR Bridge from Lubec as the only vehicle access.

Campobello is a small, quiet island with a year-round population under 900. Cell coverage is spotty in some coves, groceries are limited to a few small stores, and the nearest full-service supermarkets are in St. Stephen, New Brunswick or Machias, Maine. Fuel is available on the island but often at a premium; many RVers top up in Lubec before crossing the bridge. Border crossings at the FDR Memorial Bridge are staffed, but hours can be reduced in shoulder season. A passport or NEXUS card is required for every occupant, including children. Cannabis, firearms, and certain agricultural products should not be carried across. Tides in the Bay of Fundy run large, often more than 20 feet, so plan beach walks and lighthouse visits around tide tables. Fog can roll in quickly; bring layers even in July.
