Campgrounds and RV parks near Saint James, NB

The Bay of Fundy tides are the main draw. At Oak Bay Campground, campers can walk the exposed ocean floor at low tide and watch the water return twice a day. St. Andrews-by-the-Sea, roughly 20 to 30 minutes from most area campgrounds, offers whale-watching tours out of Passamaquoddy Bay, Kingsbrae Garden, and a historic waterfront. Inland, McAdam (Wauklehegan) Lake Campground puts guests on the water for boating, fishing, canoeing, and kayaking, and registered campers from July through September receive a pass for a free tour of the McAdam Railway Station, a National Historic Site. Island View Camping has a swimming pool, playground, and beach access on the St. Croix River. St. Stephen, minutes from Saint James, is known as Canada's Chocolate Town and home to the Chocolate Museum. Cross-border day trips to Calais, Maine, and the Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge are straightforward from Oak Bay or Hilltop Campground.

The camping season in southwestern New Brunswick is short. Most private campgrounds around Saint James open in mid-May and close in early to mid-October. Oak Bay Campground typically operates from roughly mid-May through mid-October, McAdam (Wauklehegan) Lake Campground runs from the May long weekend through Thanksgiving weekend in October, Island View Camping runs May through October, and Hilltop Campground across the border operates through the warm-weather months. Kiwanis Passamaquoddy Park in St. Andrews opens in early May and runs into October. July and August are the busiest months, coinciding with Canada Day, New Brunswick Day, and peak whale-watching season out of St. Andrews. Coastal sites at Oak Bay and Kiwanis Passamaquoddy Park book fastest for these weeks. June and September offer cooler nights, thinner crowds, and easier reservations, though ocean fog is common in early summer. Winter is not a practical camping window in the region. Snow, freezing temperatures, and closed facilities keep private campgrounds shuttered from November through April, and provincial roads see regular winter storm activity.

Expect small, family-run campgrounds rather than large resort parks. Sites are typically grassy or gravel, with picnic tables and fire rings; many properties have a mix of seasonal renters and transient sites, and seasonal sites often occupy the best waterfront spots. Cell coverage is generally reliable near St. Stephen and St. Andrews but weakens on backroads and around McAdam. Coastal weather changes quickly. Fog can settle in overnight and burn off by mid-morning, and Bay of Fundy tides run high, roughly six to nearly eight metres at Oak Bay, so plan shoreline walks around the tide table. Facilities in the area typically include hot showers, flush toilets, dump stations, laundry, and Wi-Fi at select sites. Firewood and ice are usually sold on-site. Bring layers, bug spray for inland lakes, and a passport if crossing to Calais or Robbinston.
