Campgrounds and RV parks near Shippagan, NB

The New Brunswick Aquarium and Marine Centre on the Shippagan waterfront is Atlantic Canada's largest public aquarium, with indoor tanks focused on species from the Gulf of St. Lawrence, an outdoor harbour seal pool, and a touch tank for kids. It is the region's main rainy-day option and a common first stop for families. Outside, the Acadian Peninsula supports coastal cycling on paved and mixed-surface routes between fishing villages. Warm, shallow water on the bay side supports swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, and kitesurfing, and the multiple basins around Shippagan work in a range of wind directions. Recreational fishing, mini golf, and the seaside boardwalk sit close to Camping Shippagan. A short drive north crosses onto Lamèque and Miscou Islands, ending at the Miscou Island Lighthouse, its interpretive peat bog boardwalk, and dune beaches that turn scarlet in fall.

The camping season on the Acadian Peninsula is short. Most private campgrounds around Shippagan open in mid to late June and close by mid-September, timed to school holidays and the peninsula's warm-water beach season. Shoulder weeks in June and early September offer cooler nights and easier availability but reduced on-site services such as splash pads and rentals. July and August are peak season. Water temperatures on Chaleur Bay and the Gulf side are at their warmest, festivals fill the peninsula calendar, and waterfront and full-service sites at Camping Shippagan and neighbouring parks book heavily. Reserve well ahead for these weeks, particularly around the Festival des pêches et de l'aquaculture in Shippagan. Winter closes the coastal campgrounds. Snow, ice pellets, and freezing rain are routine from December through March in northern New Brunswick, and the peninsula's exposure to the Gulf brings strong onshore winds. RV travel in the region is a spring-through-early-fall activity.

Expect a bilingual, primarily French-speaking region. Most campground staff on the Acadian Peninsula work in French and English, but signage and menus off the main tourist route are often French only. Cell coverage is generally reliable in and around Shippagan and thins on Miscou Island. Sites near the water are exposed to steady onshore wind, useful for keeping bugs down during the day but worth planning for when setting up awnings. Mosquitoes and blackflies are active in the evenings, especially early in the season and near wooded sites. Bring layers: summer days on the coast are comfortable, but nights cool quickly once the sun drops. Groceries, fuel, propane, and RV supplies are available in Shippagan itself. Beyond town, services thin out toward Miscou, so top up before heading north.
