The area is built around coastal touring. Iceberg and whale watching peaks in early summer along the Notre Dame Bay shoreline, and Twillingate, about an hour west, is a common day trip for boat tours, the Long Point Lighthouse, and seafood stops. Fogo Island, reached by the Farewell ferry, adds hiking on Brimstone Head and other coastal trails, along with the artist studios of the Fogo Island Arts program. Inland, the Gander River and Square Pond area draw anglers, paddlers, and swimmers in July and August. For rainy days, the North Atlantic Aviation Museum in Gander and the Beothuk Interpretation Centre in Boyd's Cove give kids and adults a break from the road without needing to unhitch.

The RV season in this part of Newfoundland is short. Most private and provincial campgrounds open from mid to late May and close by mid-September, with a few private operators running a bit later into the fall. Dildo Run Provincial Park typically operates from late May through mid-September. Late-season Atlantic storms and the tail ends of tropical systems can bring heavy rain and wind from August into October.

Roads in the region are mostly two-lane and paved, but shoulders are narrow and moose are a genuine hazard at dawn, dusk, and after dark. Plan drives during daylight hours and reduce speed in posted moose zones. Cellular coverage is reliable in and around Gander, Carmanville, and Twillingate, but drops out in wooded stretches and on parts of Fogo Island. Download offline maps before leaving town. Private parks are more likely to offer full hookups, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Black flies and mosquitoes are active from June into early August, especially near still water.
