Campgrounds near Ajax, Ontario
Ajax sits on the north shore of Lake Ontario in Durham Region, about 40 kilometres east of downtown Toronto. The town's flat lakeside setting and easy Highway 401 access make it a practical launch point for RV trips into the eastern Greater Toronto Area and the Kawarthas beyond.
The closest full-service option for RVers is Darlington Provincial Park, an Ontario Parks lakeside campground a short drive east near Bowmanville. Private parks fill in around it: Cedar Beach Park on Musselman's Lake in Stouffville, Ponderosa Campground off Highway 48 in the Mount Albert area, Grangeways RV Park and Family Campground, and Cedar Valley Resort north of the city on the way toward the Kawarthas.
Options range from serviced RV sites with power, water, and sewer at private resorts to more basic provincial park loops with electrical and non-electrical sites. Most parks in the area are seasonal and cater heavily to families, with pools, beaches, and organized activities during the summer months.
Things to do near Ajax
Lake Ontario is the main draw. Darlington Provincial Park sits on a small section of the 350 km Waterfront Trail, a multi-use path that follows the shore of Lake Ontario from Niagara-on-the-Lake to Trenton, and the park offers swimming beaches and a park store. The Robinson Creek Trail is a short 1 km loop that follows the intermittent Robinson Creek through a forested ravine of mature willow, Staghorn sumac, and maple trees.
Inland, Musselman's Lake at Cedar Beach Park is a spring-fed lake with a sandy swimming area, paddle sport rentals, pools, and a splash pad, geared to families with young kids. Cedar Valley Resort offers a quieter treed setting closer to the Ganaraska Forest.
Day trips from an Ajax base are easy: Toronto attractions to the west, the Oshawa waterfront and McLaughlin Bay Wildlife Reserve to the east, and the Kawartha Lakes and Ganaraska trail systems to the north.

The camping season in this part of Ontario is tightly bounded by winter. Darlington is open for camping from the beginning of May until after the Canadian Thanksgiving Weekend in mid-October. Most private parks in the area follow a similar April-to-late-October window, with Ponderosa Campground running from April into late fall.
July and August are peak season. Weekends fill quickly, waterfront sites at Darlington sell out fast, and long weekends often carry minimum-stay requirements at private resorts. Booking well in advance is essential for summer Fridays and Saturdays.
Late May, June, and September are quieter and often more comfortable, with mild days and fewer bugs than mid-summer. Fall camping through Thanksgiving weekend brings colour along the Waterfront Trail and cooler nights. There is no winter camping available at Darlington Provincial Park, but the park is open all year long for day use.

Great trailer! Took my kids camping in Anna's trailer and it was fantastic. My kids loved the bunk beds and everything functioned as intended. They took great care to explain everything to me prior to departure. They were also nice to accommodate a last minute extra night added to the booking. Would definitely recommend!

Another great rental with Jeremy. We’ve been renting this RV for a few years for races at Mosport. The delivery service is great. It’s always set up for when we arrive. Makes load in a lot easier.
Veronica K. - Oct 2026
Great experience from start to finish! The trailer was clean, well-maintained, and exactly what we needed. Jeremy was fantastic to work with - friendly, professional, responsive, and made the entire process incredibly easy. Everything went smoothly, and we really appreciated the great service. Would definitely recommend and rent again! :)

How to book
Darlington Provincial Park is reserved through the Ontario Parks reservation system, online or by phone. Reservations are accepted up to five months in advance of the arrival date. For example, you can book January 15 for an arrival date of June 15. The online reservation system opens at 7:00 a.m. Eastern, five months in advance of the first date of the trip, so pick a campsite in advance and book as soon as the window opens. Popular waterfront sites at Darlington are typically claimed within minutes of the window opening.
Private parks handle their own bookings. Cedar Valley Resort, Cedar Beach Park, Grangeways RV Park and Family Campground, and Ponderosa Campground all take reservations directly through their offices or websites. For long weekends and summer Saturdays, book several weeks or months out and confirm any minimum-stay rules before locking in travel dates.
What to expect
Darlington offers car camping in three campgrounds: Lakeside, Cliffside, and Hilltop. All sites in Lakeside offer electrical service, as do a number of sites in Cliffside and Hilltop. Comfort stations are centrally located in each campground, the Lakeside comfort station is equipped with showers, and additional showers are available at the Hilltop A shower building between Hilltop and Cliffside. The trailer sanitation station is across from the entrance to the Lakeside Campground, with one water fill station located there. There are steep, but short, hills throughout the park. Dogs are not allowed on the beach at any time.
Private resorts in the area lean toward full-hookup RV sites with 30-amp power, water, and sewer, plus pools, playgrounds, laundry, and WiFi. Cell coverage is generally strong given the proximity to Toronto, and grocery runs into Ajax, Whitby, or Bowmanville are quick from any of these campgrounds.

For the best selection of sites and views, aim for midweek stays or shoulder season trips in June or September.
reservations.ontarioparks.ca/Is winter RV camping possible in Ajax? What do I need to know?
Winter RV camping near Ajax is possible if you choose a four-season RV with heated holding tanks, good insulation, and a reliable furnace, and stay at a campground with electrical hookups. Ask your host for cold-weather prep, including using RV antifreeze in the plumbing and skirting the underbody when temperatures drop. Overnight lows in January and February often sit between -8 and -15 degrees C. Drive cautiously on Highway 401 and Highway 2 during snow, and check road conditions before departure.
511on.ca/Are Ajax and Durham region roads easy for big RVs? What about traffic?
Roads in and around Ajax are RV-friendly, with wide arterials and direct access to Highway 401 and Highway 2. Expect heavier traffic at rush hour (roughly 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m.) on the 401 between Ajax, Pickering, and Toronto. Leaving mid-morning or after the evening peak makes for an easier drive in a larger motorhome. Watch posted height limits on older underpasses and take wider turns at Rouge Valley curves. If you would rather skip city driving, choose RV delivery in Ajax.
511on.ca/What equipment and hookups are usually at Ajax area campgrounds?
Most campgrounds near Ajax, including Darlington Provincial Park and Glen Rouge Campground, offer electrical hookups (15, 30, or 50 amp depending on site), potable water fill stations, and RV dump stations. Larger parks add comfort stations with showers, laundry, and playgrounds. Full three-way hookups (power, water, sewer) are more common at private parks such as Cedar Valley in Bowmanville. Check the site map when reserving to confirm the services you need for your RV camping trip near Ajax.
ontarioparks.com/park/darlington/campingWhat amenities come with most Ajax RV rentals?
Most RV rentals in Ajax come fully equipped: real beds, a kitchen with fridge, stove, and sink, and a bathroom with a shower and toilet. Many motorhomes include air conditioning, a furnace, a TV, and a generator for off-grid camping, with seatbelts for all listed passengers. Trailers often include awnings and outdoor cooking setups. Each listing on RVezy shows photos and a detailed amenity checklist, so you can filter for must-haves like bunk beds or solar and confirm details with the host.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ajax%2C%20OntarioWhat add-ons or options can I request with my RV rental in Ajax?
Many Ajax hosts offer add-ons such as kitchen kits, bedding and linens, outdoor chairs, bike racks, BBQs, firewood, and generator rentals for non-hookup sites. Available options and their prices are listed on each RV page, and many listings support instant booking when you are short on time.
