Camping near Grey Highlands, Ontario

Grey Highlands is a rural municipality in the southeast corner of Grey County, formed in 2001 from the amalgamation of several smaller communities including Flesherton, Markdale, and Kimberley. It sits on the Niagara Escarpment about two hours northwest of Toronto, with the Beaver Valley cutting through its northern edge and the Saugeen River system draining its west side. The area draws RV travellers looking for a base close to Blue Mountain, Georgian Bay beaches, and the Bruce Trail without staying inside a busy resort village. Campground options nearby run from full-service resorts to provincial and conservation-authority parks. Sun Retreats Blue Mountains sits north of Grey Highlands near Thornbury with full-hookup sites and resort amenities. Craigleith Provincial Park runs along the Georgian Bay shoreline west of Collingwood, and Meaford Memorial Park lines the waterfront in Meaford. Inland options include Durham Conservation Area on the Saugeen River and Amazing Rocky Park Campground on the Rocky Saugeen. Roads through Grey Highlands are mostly rural two-lane, and grocery, fuel, and LCBO stops are available in Markdale, Flesherton, and Durham.

Things to do around Grey Highlands

The Bruce Trail runs along the escarpment through the Beaver Valley, with side trails and waterfalls including Eugenia Falls, Hoggs Falls, and Walters Falls within a short drive. Cyclists have quiet county roads and the paved Georgian Trail between Meaford and Collingwood. Blue Mountain Resort, twenty to thirty minutes north, runs a summer village, chairlift rides, and a mountain coaster. Water activities centre on Georgian Bay beaches at Craigleith and Meaford and on the Saugeen and Rocky Saugeen rivers for swimming, paddling, and fly-fishing. Families staying at Amazing Rocky Park Campground can swim or fish on the river. Meaford Harbour, Thornbury's Mill Pond, and the Beaver Valley round out day-trip options.

The main RV season runs from mid-May through mid-October, matching the operating windows at the local parks. Craigleith Provincial Park typically opens in mid-May and closes around the third weekend in October. Meaford Memorial Park runs from about mid-May to late October, with waterfront sites the first to sell out. Sun Retreats Blue Mountains operates as a seasonal resort with limited nightly availability, and Durham Conservation Area is booked online from February 1 through Thanksgiving weekend. Summer brings warm days on Georgian Bay, busy weekends around Blue Mountain, and prime-rate pricing at private parks from late June through Labour Day. Victoria Day and Thanksgiving weekends also sell out early. September and early October are the quietest stretch of the warm season, with fall colour peaking in the Beaver Valley in the first two weeks of October. Durham Conservation Area also offers winter camping with serviced 30-amp sites from mid-November through late March, giving RVers a shoulder-season option when other parks are closed.

There's not much to say other than the experience was fantastic. Jen and her husband our very attentive. They'll show you everything you need to know. If you have any questions or have any issues, they get back to you. Which is the best part about it? And they leave you with it was something special a great experience. The trailer was nice and easy to tow. Love the awning, the stereo system. The outdoor kitchen, there's enough plugs to charge anything you need showers, a decent size for a big fella like me. Perfect for my wife. Water gets nice and hot fredge keeps the beer nice and cold and also the food. There's everything you need in that trailer. From c******* to chalks and levels so much fun. Would definitely do this again.

We rented the trailer for our wedding weekend, and Jennifer left us a bottle of champagne and some nice goodies, so thoughtful! Trailer was clean, bed is a bit uncomfortable. It was easy to pickup, however it was locked with the keys hanging inside, fortunately the front compartment was unlocked so we had to crawl in through it under the bed. Jennifer was easy to get ahold of if needed! Overall good experience.

How to book campgrounds near Grey Highlands

Each park in the area uses a different reservation system. Craigleith Provincial Park is booked through Ontario Parks online or by phone on a rolling five-month window that opens at 7 a.m. ET, and popular summer weekends can sell out within minutes. Meaford Memorial Park uses Camplife for online reservations, with waterfront sites numbered 1 through 18 released to the public on January 1 at 9 a.m. separately from the rest of the campground. Durham Conservation Area is booked through the Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority's online system starting February 1. Amazing Rocky Park Campground and Sun Retreats Blue Mountains take bookings directly through their own websites or by phone. For any July or August weekend, book as early as the system allows and have a backup park in mind.

What to expect on site

Site style varies widely across the area. Craigleith Provincial Park has 172 sites, 66 of them with electrical service, arranged in four areas near the beach, with comfort stations offering flush toilets, showers, and laundry. It is a compact park close to Highway 26, so highway noise carries at night. Meaford Memorial Park has around 143 sites with a mix of full-hookup, hydro/water, and non-serviced options, plus a dump station, mini-golf, and playground. Sun Retreats Blue Mountains and Amazing Rocky Park Campground offer 30-amp full-hookup sites and pull-through options for larger rigs. Cell coverage is generally reliable across Grey Highlands, though it can drop in the deeper sections of the Beaver Valley. Firewood is sold on site at most parks, and moving firewood long distances is discouraged to limit pest spread.
